Bacterial direct-fed microbials fail to reduce methane emissions in primiparous lactating dairy cows

Direct-fed microbials(DFM) are considered as a promising technique to improve animal productivity without affecting animal health or harming the *** potential of three bacterial DFM to reduce methane(CH4)emissions,modulate ruminal fermentation,milk production and composition of primiparous dairy cows was examined in this *** previous reports have shown that DFM respond differently to different diets,two contrasting diets were used in this *** lactating primiparous cows were randomly divided into two groups that were fed a corn silage-based,high-starch diet(HSD) or a grass silage-based,high-fiber diet(HFD).Cows in each dietary group were randomly assigned to four treatments in a 4 × 4 Latin square *** bacterial DFM used were selected for their proven CH4-reducing effect in *** included control(without DFM) and 3 DFM treatments: propionibacterium freudenreichii 53-W(2.9 × 10^10 colony forming units(CFU)/cow per day),Lactobacillus pentosus D31(3.6 × 10^11 CFU/cow per day) and Lactobacillus bulgaricus D1(4.6 × 10^10 CFU/cow per day).Each experimental period included 4 weeks of treatment and 1 week of wash-out,with measures performed in the fourth week of the treatment *** CH4 emissions were measured during 3 consecutive days using respiration *** samples were collected for ruminal fermentation parameters and quantitative microbial *** samples were collected for composition *** weight of cows were recorded at the end of each treatment *** of diet,no mitigating effect of DFM was observed on CH4 emissions in dairy *** contrast,propionibacterium increased CH4 intensity by 27%(g CH4/kg milk) in cows fed *** was no effect of DFM on other fermentation parameters and on bacterial,archaeal and protozoal ***,the effect of DFM on milk fatty acid composition was *** and *** DFM tended to increase body weight gain with ***

Effect of Heat Loss on Laminar Flamelet Species Concentration

The effects of heat loss on the structure of laminar flamelets,which are the constitutive elements of turbulent flames under the most common operating conditions,are investigated for typical aeronautical gas-turbine operating conditions at *** magnitude of heat loss is quantified via the "enthalpy defect" measured with respect to an adiabatic flame.A procedure to generate laminar flamelets with an assigned enthalpy defect at the boundaries is devised and applied to nonpremixed propane/air flames,as propane reproduces the essential features of higher hydrocarbon *** is found,contrary to commonly held beliefs,that the enthalpy defect has a significant effect on the concentration not only of minor species,but also of main reaction *** effects are found in general to be more pronounced for fuel-rich *** impact is anticipated on the formation rate of nitric *** effects of scalar dissipation rate are also discussed.

Interspecific interactions are key drivers of individual and population-level fitness in a wide range of ***,in marine ecosystems,it is relatively unknown which biotic and abiotic factors impact behavioral interactions between competing *** assessed the impact of weather,marine productivity,and population structure on the behavioral agonistic interactions between South American fur seals(SAFSs),Arctocephalus australis,and South American sea lions(SASLs),Otaria byronia,in a breeding colony of *** hypothesized that agonistic interactions between SAFSs and SASLs respond to biotic and abiotic factors such as SAFS population structure,marine productivity,and *** found that SASL and SAFS interactions almost always resulted in negative impacts on the social structure or reproductive success of the SAFS *** adult males initiated stampedes of SAFS and/or abducted and predated SAFS *** SAFS males abundance and severe weather events were negatively correlated with agonistic interactions between ***,proxies for lower marine productivity such as higher sea surface temperature and lower catches of demerso-pelagic fish were the most important predictors of more frequent agonistic interactions between SAFS and *** the current scenario of decline in marine biomass due to global climate change and overfishing,agonistic interactions between competing marine predators could increase and exacerbate the negative impacts of environmental change in these species.

Two methodological approaches to assess the seismic vulnerability of masonry bridges

This work describes the seismic vulnerability assessment of a railway masonry arch *** conservation state is initially investigated by means of a thorough field and laboratory test campaign, comprising destructive and non-destructive tests. Two different methods are used to evaluate the bridge seismic vulnerability. The first method adopts a deterministic approach and corresponds to a single non-linear static analysis, performed as described in the Eurocodes. The second method employs a probabilistic approach and considers the variability of the involved mechanical parameters(structure geometry and properties of the building materials) and seismic parameters(intensity of the action and site conditions). This method associates the probabilistic values of ground acceleration exceedance to the estimated seismic vulnerability. This is shown by means of fragility curves, which allow to take into consideration the uncertainty of the various components involved in the definition of the seismic vulnerability and display the seismic damage scenarios. Currently no code requires to perform this calculation procedure. In addition,this work compares the values of masonry mechanical properties specified in the Eurocodes with those obtained in an extensive investigation campaign involving more than one hundred masonry bridges. Compressive strength and longitudinal elasticity modulus are the relevant mechanical parameters investigated. The outcomes of this research can contribute to the development of a more efficient maintenance system of the masonry bridges belonging to the railway network. This has an important role when it comes to establishing the priority order of assets intervention.

patterns of variation in the size of vulture foraging groups,and their ecological causes and consequences,remain litle explored despite strong links with the carrion recycling service that this key functional group *** documented the group size-frequency pattern of Andean con-dors Vultur gryphus gathered to feed on 42 equine carcasses experimentally placed in Bolivia,between 2012 and 2019,along an elevation range of 1,300-4,500 m *** on the location(altitude and latitude)of the foraging groups,we examined the relationship between their size and species'population parameters(size and trend),habitat conditions,and livestock carcass availability and *** utilized a high frequency(93%)of carcasses forming groups that ranged from 1 to 80 individuals(mean=25,median=18)and shaped a"lazy-J curve"typical pattern of size-frequency distribution whereby few groups(5,12%)were large(>55 individuals)and most(21,50%)were relatively small(p size related to altitude in that most larger groups formed at lower sites(below c.3,000 m asl),likely following an altitudinal gradient whereby larger groups are more likely to form around larger carcasses(i.e.,cattle),which are more likely to occur at lower *** of population size,group size could be an adaptive response of condors via local enhancement for improving individual scavenging *** information gaps on this topic still exist,thus we provide a set of questions to address them,especially amidst the unrestricted impacts of human activities that condition vulture survival globally.

Retinal degenerative diseases affecting the outer retina in its many forms(inherited,acquired or induced)are characterized by photoreceptor loss,and represent currently a leading cause of irreversible vision loss in the *** present,there are very few treatments capable of preventing,recovering or reversing photoreceptor degeneration or the secondary retinal remodeling,which follows photoreceptor loss and can also cause the death of other retinal ***,these diseases are nowadays one of the greatest challenges in the field of ophthalmological *** marrow derived-mononuclear stem cell transplantation has shown promising results for the treatment of photoreceptor *** cells may have the potential to slow down photoreceptor loss,and therefore should be applied in the early stages of photoreceptor ***,because of their possible paracrine effects,they may have a wide range of clinical applications,since they can potentially impact on several retinal cell types at once and photoreceptor degenerations can involve different cells and/or begin in one cell type and then affect adjacent *** intraocular injection of bone marrow derived-mononuclear stem cells also enhances the outcomes of other treatments aimed to protect ***,it is likely that future investigations may combine bone marrow derived-mononuclear stem cell therapy with other systemic or intraocular treatments to obtain greater therapeutic effects in degenerative retinal diseases.
