Pelleting and particle size reduction of corn increase net energy and digestibility of fiber,protein,and fat in corn-soybean meal diets fed to group-housed pigs

Background Reduction of the particle size of corn increases energy digestibility and concentrations of digestible and metabolizable *** may also reduce particle size of grain,but it is not known if there are interactions between particle size reduction and *** objective of this experiment was to test the hypothesis that particle size reduction and pelleting,separately or in combination,increase N balance,apparent total tract digestibility(ATTD)of fiber and fat,and net energy(NE)in corn-soybean meal diets fed to group-housed *** Six corn-soybean meal-based diets were used in a 3×2 factorial design with 3 particle sizes of corn(i.e.,700,500,or 300μm)and 2 diet forms(i.e.,meal or pelleted).Pigs were allowed ad libitum access to feed and ***-four castrated male pigs(initial weight:29.52 kg;standard diviation:1.40)were allotted to the 6 diets using a 6×6 Latin square design with 6 calorimeter chambers(i.e.,4 pigs/chamber)and 6 *** consumption and CO_(2)and CH_(4)productions were measured during fed and fasting states and fecal and urine samples were *** Regardless of particle size of corn,the ATTD of gross energy(GE),N,and acid-hydrolyzed ether extract(AEE),and the concentration of NE were greater(P<0.05)in pelleted diets than in meal *** of diet form,the ATTD of GE,N,and AEE,and the concentration of NE were increased(linear;P<0.05)by reducing the particle size of corn,but the increase was greater in meal diets than in pelleted diets(interaction;P<0.05).Conclusions Both pelleting and reduction of corn particle size increased nutrient digestibility and NE,but increases were greater in meal diets than in pelleted diets.

Usefulness of the CONUT index upon hospital admission as a potential prognostic indicator of COVID-19 health outcomes

Background:In-hospital mortality in patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is *** prognostic indices are needed to identify patients at high-risk of COVID-19 health *** aimed to determine the usefulness of the CONtrolling NUTritional status(CONUT)index as a potential prognostic indicator of mortality in COVID-19 patients upon hospital ***:Our study design is of a retrospective observational study in a large cohort of COVID-19 *** addition to descriptive statistics,a Kaplan-Meier mortality analysis and a Cox regression were performed,as well as receiver operating curve(ROC).Results:From February 5,2020 to January 21,2021,there was a total of 2969 admissions for COVID-19 at our hospital,corresponding to 2844 ***,baseline(within 4 days of admission)CONUT index could be scored for 1627(57.2%)***’age was 67.3±16.5 years and 44.9%were *** CONUT severity distribution was:194(11.9%)normal(0-1);769(47.2%)light(2-4);585(35.9%)moderate(5-8);and 79(4.9%)severe(9-12).Mortality of 30 days after admission was 3.1%in patients with normal risk CONUT,9.0%light,22.7%moderate,and 40.5%in those with severe CONUT(P<0.05).An increased risk of death associated with a greater baseline CONUT stage was sustained in a multivariable Cox regression model(P<0.05).An increasing baseline CONUT stage was associated with a longer duration of admission,a greater requirement for the use of non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation,and other clinical outcomes(all P<0.05).The ROC of CONUT for mortality had an area under the curve(AUC)and 95%confidence interval of 0.711(0.676-0746).Conclusion:The CONUT index upon admission is potentially a reliable and independent prognostic indicator of mortality and length of hospitalization in COVID-19 patients.

The Use of Rank Histograms and MVL Diagrams to Characterize Ensemble Evolution in Weather Forecasting

Rank Histograms are suitable tools to assess the quality of ensembles within an ensemble prediction system or framework. By counting the rank of a given variable in the ensemble, we are basically making a sample analysis, which does not allow us to distinguish if the origin of its variability is external noise or comes from chaotic sources. The recently introduced Mean to Variance Logarithmic （MVL） Diagram accounts for the spatial variability, being very sensitive to the spatial localization produced by infinitesimal perturbations of spatiotemporal chaotic systems. By using as a benchmark a simple model subject to noise, we show the distinct information given by Rank Histograms and MVL Diagrams. Hence, the main effects of the external noise can be visualized in a graphic. From the MVL diagram we clearly observe a reduction of the amplitude growth rate and of the spatial localization （chaos suppression）, while from the Rank Histogram we observe changes in the reliability of the ensemble. We conclude that in a complex framework including spatiotemporal chaos and noise, both provide a more complete forecasting picture.

Mesoporous fibrous silicon nitride by catalytic nitridation of silicon

The catalytic effect of metal oxide/alumina whiskers（CeO;, Mn;O;, NiO, Co;O;, Fe;O;, Cr;O;/AW） was evaluated on their ability to drive the nitridation of silicon and to generate mesoporous fibrous silicon *** powder with different particles size along with the catalyst was nitridized at 1300 °C for 5 h in nitrogen and nitrogen diluted with 10 vol% ammonia atmospheres. Nitridation degree of silicon up to 99% was recorded using 1.5 wt% CeO;and Fe;O;catalysts in nitrogen-ammonia atmosphere. The catalyzed samples contain submicronic silicon nitride fibres with a diameter of 400–500 nm and a length of up to few micrometers. The compressive strength of 46 ± 1 MPa was measured for silicon samples catalyzed with nickel oxide/alumina whiskers and nitridized in N;/10 vol%NH;atmosphere. Porous silicon nitride networks were produced with 45–52% porosity, pore sizes in the range of 370–1200 nm and median pore in the range of 495–1655 nm.

A defensive k-alliance in a graph is a set S of vertices with the property that every vertex in S has at least k more neighbors in S than it has outside of S. A defensive k-alliance S is called global if it forms a dominating Set. In this paper we study the problem of partitioning the vertex set of a graph into （global） defensive k-alliances. The （global） defensive k-alliance partition number of a graph Г = （V, E）, ψkgd（F）） ψkd（F）, is defined to be the maximum number of sets in a partition of V such that each set is a （global） defensive k-alliance. We obtain tight bounds on ψkd（F） and ψkgd（F） in terms of several parameters of the graph including the order, size, maximum and minimum degree, the algebraic connectivity and the isoperimetric number. Moreover, we study the close relationships that exist among partitions of F1 × F2 into （global） defensive （kl ＋ k2）-alliances and partitions of Fi into （global） defensive ki-alliances, i ∈ {1, 2}.

Soil fertilization does not alter plant architectural effects on arthropod communities

Aims While a growing number of studies have demonstrated the impor-tance of intraspecific differences within plant species on associ-ated arthropod communities,little is known regarding the relative strength of these effects compared to environmental *** this study,we examined whether intraspecific plant differences and nutrient fertilization interact to shape the arthropod community of a dominant coastal shrub,Baccharis pilularis(coyote bush).Methods We overlaid a fertilization treatment on a 12-year-old common garden experiment planted with erect and prostrate architectural morphs of Baccharis in california,*** collect the associated arthropod community,we vacuum sampled the crown of each Baccharis and identified individuals to species or *** Findings We found that arthropod richness and abundance were 2-to 3-fold greater on prostrate Baccharis than on erect morphs,but observed no main effects of fertilizer addition on the over-all arthropod *** responded as strongly as herbivores to plant morph,and both were unaffected by nutrient *** the specialist stem galler,Gnorimoschema bac-charisella,showed an interactive response to plant morph and ***,phosphorous and potassium addition had opposite effects on the two morphs,increasing stem gall abun-dance by 50%on prostrate morphs,but reducing galling by 20%on erect *** architectural complexity of prostrate morphs could be the driving mechanism of differences in arthropod ***,our results demonstrate that communitylevel consequences of intraspecific differences in plants are strong,rather than being context dependent,and are generally maintained under different resource *** growing number of studies showing strong genotype than nutrient effects on associated arthropod communities suggests that this might be a generalized pattern.

Resource availability and plant diversity explain patterns of invasion of an exotic grass

Aims in this study,we examine two common invasion biology hypotheses-biotic resistance and fluctuating resource availability-to explain the patterns of invasion of an invasive grass,Microstegium *** We used 13-year-old deer exclosures in great smoky mountains National Park,USA,to examine how chronic disturbance by deer browsing affects available resources,plant diversity,and invasion in an understory plant *** two replicate 1 m2 plots in each deer browsed and unbrowsed area,we recorded each plant species present,the abundance per species,and the fractional per-cent cover of vegetation by the cover classes:herbaceous,woody,and *** each sample plot,we also estimated overstory canopy cover,soil moisture,total soil carbon and nitrogen,and soil pH as a measure of abiotic differences between *** Findings We found that plant community composition between chronically browsed and unbrowsed plots differed *** diversity was 40%lower in browsed than in unbrowsed *** our sites,diver-sity explained 48%and woody plant cover 35%of the variation in *** *** addition,we found 3.3 times less *** in the unbrowsed plots due to higher woody plant cover and plant diversity than in the browsed plots.a parsimonious explanation of these results indicate that disturbances such as herbivory may elicit multiple conditions,namely releasing available resources such as open space,light,and decreasing plant diversity,which may facilitate the proliferation of an invasive ***,by testing two different hypotheses,this study addresses more recent calls to incorporate multiple hypotheses into research attempting to explain plant invasion.

Solution combustion synthesis and electrochemical properties of yttrium-doped LiMnPO4/C cathode materials for lithium ion batteries

Phospho-olivine pristine LiMnPO4/C and yttrium-substituted LiMn1-xYxPO4/C(x=0,0.01,0.03,0.05)were synthesized by a solution combustion *** effects of Y-doped on structure,morphology and electrochemical performances were *** powder X-ray diffraction pattern,all substituted materials adopt an identical structure to that of the LiMnPO4 olivine structure,suggesting that the yttrium ion was well inco rporated into the crystal lattice,without any changes in the host crystal *** electrochemical impedance spectroscopy provides clearly that yttrium-substituting reduces the charge transfer impedance and improves the lithium ion diffusion through the *** x=0.01,the material shows an excellent capacity and stability during charge/discharge *** initial specific discharge capacity can reach up to 156.84 mAh/g at C/20,with a coulombic efficiency of about 96.11%,which is 14%higher than that of the pristine *** results confirm that the cyclic stability and the electrochemical performances of LiMnPO4/C are highly improved by Y-doping.
