Swallowing threshold parameters of subj.cts with complete dentures and overdentures

Aim: To compare the chewing process and swallowing threshold parameters of subj.cts with complete dentures and overdentures with data obtained from subj.cts with complete natural dentitions. Metho-dology: The chewing process in terms of swallowing threshold parameters of four groups of subj.cts with complete dentures (all females) was quantified by sieving particles after chewing of an artificial test ‘food’ and compared with that of subj.cts with com-plete natural dentitions as a reference group (33 sub-j.cts). All subj.cts (except those of the reference group) had a complete denture in the upper j.w. Regarding the lower j.w two groups with complete dentures (with high (24 subj.cts), respectively low mandible (12 subj.cts)) and two groups with overdentures (implant-retained (22 subj.cts), respectively natural root supported (19 subj.cts)) were composed. Results: The ‘overdenture-implants’ group needed significantly more chewing cycles and time (mean: 45 cycles in 32 seconds) until ‘swallowing’ compared to the group with complete natural dentitions (mean: 26 cycles in 19 seconds until ‘swallowing’). Also the ‘complete denture-low mandible’ group needed sig-nificantly more cycles and time (mean: 52 cycles in 44 seconds) until ‘swallowing’ than the complete dentition group. In the ‘overdenture-natural roots’ group these outcomes (33 cycles in 24 seconds) were not significantly different compared with the complete dentition group. The ‘complete denture-high mandi-ble’ group (32 cycles in 26 seconds) needed not sig-nificantly more cycles until ‘swallowing’, however time until ‘swallowing’ was significantly longer com-pared to the complete dentition group. All denture groups had significantly larger mean particle sizes when ‘swallowing’ (sizes in the order of 3 mm) than the natural dentition group (about 2 mm). The energy efficiency of a building depends on building envelope *** results presented in this paper are the first of a long-term building envelope research proj.ct at the Alternative Village at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg,Manitoba,*** test buildings were constructed using the following systems:two wood frames with fiberglass batt insulation and dense pack cellulose,one polyurethane structural insulated panels(PUR SIP),and two with the Stay in place PVC concrete form building system using 102mm and 204mm of concrete externally insulated with 102mm of expanded polystyrene *** of the buildings had a common foundation and roof system with a footprint of 23.8 *** door tests were conducted to determine air *** structure was heated with an electrical resistance heater and maintained at a constant internal *** thermal gradient through the wall and power consumption were *** study period discussed in this report represents the main heating season from October 2011 to April 2012 consisting of 209 *** on the power consumption,the PUR SIP consumed the least at 2498 kWh,while the 204 mm Stay in place PVC concrete form building used the most at 2898 kWh for the same time *** thermal gradient through the cross section of the wood frame structures was compared through the cavity insulation and at the *** was found that the cellulose building provided better thermal resistance along the stud when compared to the fiberglass batt insulation.

A Vietnamese version of the 14-item oral health impact profile (OHIP-14VN)

Aim: To validate a Vietnamese short version (OHIP- 14VN) for use in epidemiological studies. Methods: The original English-language version was translated into Vietnamese, back translated and after some revisions tested for psychometric properties. Subj.cts (n = 724) were asked to self-administer a questionnaire but could ask for assistance. Convergent validity was tested by investigating associations between OHIP domain and total scores, and dichotomized self-reported satisfaction with 1) the dentition in general, 2) chewing function, and 3) esthetics. Groups validity was evaluated by comparing OHIP scores of subj.cts having ≤6 molars vs. >6 molars and tooth decay vs. no decay. Test-retest reliability was investigated in a convenience sample (n = 54) and expressed in Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICCs). Internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach’s alpha and average interitem correlation coefficients. Results: Validity: all associations were in the hypothesized directions. Differences in mean OHIP total were statistically sig-nificant for all discriminative variables. OHIP scores completed with assistance were significantly lower than those from self-administered questionnaires and therefore analyzed separately. For both administration formats differences in mean scores were still significant for “satisfaction” but for having ≤6 molars or decay the differences lost significance for most domain and total scores. Reliability: ICCs ranged from 0.54 - 0.74. Internal consistency: Cronbach’s alphas for OHIP total scores were 0.93 (self-administered) and 0.91 (with assistance). Average interitem correlation coefficients ranged from 0.26 - 0.67 (self-administered) and 0.28 - 0.69 (with assistance). Conclusions: This Vietnamese version of the OHIP-14 demonstrated good construct validity and acceptable reliability for OHIP total scores however OHIP-14VN domain scores should be interpreted with caution.

The use of structural insulated panels(SIPs)for wall and roof assemblies in residential and commercial buildings is a well-known construction *** typically use a combination of either expanded polystyrene foam(EPS)or polyurethane foam(PUR)as the core *** covering or skin is predominantly oriented strand board(OSB).The OSB is either bonded to the foam with adhesive in the case of EPS,while polyurethane is used to provide adhesion with PUR *** paper presents the results of research that investigated the use of industrial hemp mat used as a skin for soy-based polyurethane foam panels.A series of tests were conducted to investigate moisture resistance and flexural behaviour on hemp mat foam *** absorption behaviour was evaluated on three specimen types:uncoated,earth plaster and tung oil treated hemp *** absorption coefficient Aw was determined for all *** tung oil treated specimens exhibited a water absorption coefficient that was 5.3%of that for untreated hemp mat panel *** tests were conducted on dry specimens with earth-plastered hemp mat,tung oil coated hemp mat,OSB and,untreated hemp mat *** oil provided resistance to tension failure and increased capacity to withstand considerable deformation without tensile failure in flexural *** with pure foam specimens,untreated hemp mat improved flexural performance by 16.3%.

MEASUREMENT OF THE EFFICIENCY OF EVACUATED TUBE SOLAR COLLECTORS UNDER VARIOUS OPERATING CONDITIONS

Remediation of saline–sodic soil with flue gas desulfurization gypsum in a reclaimed tidal flat of southeast China

Salinization and sodicity are obstacles for vegetation reconstruction of coastal tidal flat soils. A study was conducted with flue gas desulfurization（FGD）-gypsum applied at rates of 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 Mg/ha to remediate tidal flat soils of the Yangtze River *** sodium percentage（ESP）, exchangeable sodium（ExNa）, p H, soluble salt concentration, and composition of soluble salts were measured in 10 cm increments from the surface to 30 cm depth after 6 and 18 months. The results indicated that the effect of FGD-gypsum is greatest in the 0–10 cm mixing soil layer and 60 Mg/ha was the optimal rate that can reduce the ESP to below 6% and decrease soil p H to neutral（7.0）. The improvement effect was reached after 6 months, and remained after 18 months. The composition of soluble salts was transformed from sodic salt ions mainly containing Na~＋, HCO_3^-＋ CO_3^（2-）and Cl-to neutral salt ions mainly containing Ca^（2＋）and SO_4^（2-）. Non-halophyte plants were survived at 90%. The study demonstrates that the use of FGD-gypsum for remediating tidal flat soils is promising.

Pyrrololactam type of alkaloids was found in many marine sponges which belong to the family Axinellidae. In the course of our systematic research for bioactive substances in marine organisms, we studied the sponge Phacellia fusca Schmidt which also belongs to the family Axinelldae. From the chloroform-soluble fraction, ten A-nor-sterols were isolated and identified, while from the water-soluble portion, three known pyrrololactam alkaloids and a new pyrrololactam alkaloid, which was named fuscin, were obtained. The present paper contains the isolation and structure determination of fuscin (1).

Rheological properties of rare earth minerals flotation pulp in the presence of anions

Water quality has been found to significantly influence the flotation operations due to the alteration of surface properties of *** effect of cations on the flotation of RE minerals has been studied,however,there are still very limited information regarding the effect of *** present study examined the impact of specific anions such as Cl^(-),SO_(4)^(2-),and HCO_(3)^(-)on the flotation performance of rare earth(RE) *** study integrates flotation experiments,rheology measurements,entrainment experiments,zeta potential measurements and settling *** is observed that an increase in the concentration of these anions lead to a decrease in the recovery of RE minerals and an increase in the recovery of FeO minerals and thus negatively affecting flotation *** adverse effect is most pronounced with Cl^(-)and least noticeable with HCO_(3)^(-).An increase in the non-selective entrainment of gangue minerals is observed when the flotation pulp has higher *** reduction in the zeta potential of fine particles in the presence of these results in a higher pulp viscosity due to increased attractive forces between *** findings were verified by settling experiments and calculations based on the DLVO theory.

Effectiveness of hand self-shiatsu to improve sleep following sport-related concussion in young athletes: a proof-of-concept study

Obj.ctive: The prevalence of sport-related concussion(SRC) is high and results in a number of serious health consequences. One area that has received minimal research is the relationship between SRC and sleep. The literature shows that sleep deficiency is a frequent negative consequence of SRC. At the same time, sleep deficiency delays recovery from SRC and contributes added risk of symptom recurrence.A 2014 study of chronic pain patients who learned to apply the complementary and alternative medicine intervention hand self-shiatsu(HSS) had promising, sleep-promoting results that warrant further investigation with other populations. This proof-of-concept study explored the feasibility of HSS as an intervention to promote sleep onset and continuity for young adults with ***: This study employed a prospective case-series design, where participants act as their own controls. Baseline and follow-up data included standardized self-reported assessment tools and sleep ***: Seven athletes, aged between 18 and 25 years, participated in the study. Although statistically significant improvement in actigraphy sleep scores between baseline and follow-up was not achieved,metrics for sleep quality and daytime fatigue showed significant ***: These findings support the hypothesis that HSS has the potential to improve sleep and reduce daytime fatigue in young postconcussion athletes. This pilot study provides guidance to refine research protocols and lays a foundation for further, large-sample, controlled studies.

Variation in resource competition traits among Microcystis strains is affected by their microbiomes

Freshwater harmful algal blooms are often dominated by Microcystis,a phylogenetically cohesive group of cyanobacteria marked by extensive genetic and physiological *** have previously shown that this genetic diversity and the presence of a microbiome of heterotrophic bacteria influences competitive interactions with eukaryotic *** this study,we sought to explain these observations by characterizing Monod equation parameters for resource usage(maximum growth rateμmax,half-saturation value for growth Ks,and quota)as a function of N and P levels for four strains(NIES-843,PCC 9701,PCC 7806[WT],and PCC 7806ΔmcyB)in presence and absence of a microbiome derived from Microcystis isolated from Lake *** indicated limited differences in maximum growth rates but more pronounced differences in half-saturation values among Microcystis *** largest impact of the microbiome was reducing the minimal nitrogen concentration sustaining growth and reducing half saturation values,with variable results depending on the Microcystis *** strains also differed from each other in their N and P quotas and the extent to which microbiome presence affected *** data highlight the importance of the microbiome in altering Microcystis-intrinsic traits,strain competitive hierarchies,and thus bloom *** quota,μmax,and Ks are commonly used in models for harmful algal blooms,our data suggest that model improvement may be possible by incorporating genotype dependencies of resource-use parameters.
