How do stream processes affect hazard exposure on alluvial fans? Insights from an experimental study

Alluvial fans are among the most privileged settlement areas in many mountain regions. These landforms are particularly dynamic being episodically affected by distributary processes generated by extreme flood events. Addressing risk assessment entails determining hazard exposure and unravelling how it might be related to process loading and to process dynamics once the flow becomes unconfined on the surface of alluvial fans. By following a ‘similarity of process concept’, rather than by attempting to scale a real-world prototype, we performed a set of 72 experimental runs on an alluvial fan model. Thereby, we considered two model layouts, one without a guiding channel and featuring a convex shape and the other one with a guiding channel, a bridge, and inclined but planar overland flow areas as to mirror an anthropic environment. Process magnitude and intensity parameters were systematically varied, and the associated biphasic distributary processes video recorded. For each experiment, the exposure was detected by mapping the exposed area in a GIS, thereby discerning between areas exposed to biphasic flows and the associated depositional phenomena or to the liquid flow phase only. Our results reveal that total event volume, sediment availability and stream power in the feeding channel, as well as depositional effects, avulsion, and channelization on the alluvial fan concur to determine the overall exposure. Stream process loading alone, even when rigorously defined in terms of its characterizing parameters, is not sufficient to exhaustively determine exposure. Hence, further developing reliable biphasic simulation models for hazard assessment on settled alluvial fans is pivotal.

Ultrastructural analysis shows persistence of adhesion and tight junction proteins in mature human hair

The differentiation of cells composing mature human hairs produces layers with different corneous characteristics that would tend to flake away one from another,as in the corneous layer of the epidermis,without anchoring *** is likely that cell junctions established in the forming cells of the hair bulb are not completely degraded like in the corneous layer of the epidermis but instead remain in the hair shaft to bind mature cuticle,cortex,and medulla cells into a compact hair *** cell differentiation in hairs,cell junctions seem to disappear,and little is known about the fate of junctional proteins present in the mature human hair *** present ultrastructural immunogold study has detected some marker proteins of adhesion junction(cadherin and beta-catenin)and tight junctions(occludin and cingulin)that are still present in cornified hairs where numerous isopeptide bonds are detected,especially in the *** qualitative ultrastructural study indicates that aside from the cell membrane complex,a long corneo-desmosome bonding cortex and cuticle cells,also sparse adherens and tight junction remnants are *** is suggested that the cornification of these junctions with the incorporation of their proteins within the mature corneous material of the hair shaft likely contributes to maintaining the integrity of the mature *** information will also allow us to evaluate the effects of different chemical components present in hair formulations and stains on these junctional proteins and the consequent integrity of the hair shaft.

Ultrastructure of Bat (Pipistrellus kuhlii) Epidermis with Emphasis on Terminal Differentiation of Corneocytes

The ultrastrncture of the skin of air-adapted mammals （bats） is not known. The study at the electron microscope of the skin of the back and the flying membrane of Pipistrellus kuhlii showed that the thickness of the epidermis is very low （10- 12μm）, and that 1 - 2 flat spinosus cells are present beneath the stratum corneum which is formed by very thin corneoeytes that resemble those of avian apteric epidermis. The stratum granulosum is discontinuous and few small （less than 0.3μm large） keratohyalin granules are present. The epidermis is reduced to one flat basal layer in contact with the stratum corneum in many areas of the flying membrane. Transitional corneoeytes are almost absent suggesting that the process of eornification is very rapid. In the basement membrane numerous hemidesmosomes are present and form attachment points for the dense dermis underneath. Numerous collagen fibrils directly contact with the hemidesmosomes and the dense lamella of the basement membrane. Sparse elastic fibrils allow the stretching of the epidermis during flight and the rapid folding of the epidermis after flying without damaging the epidermis. Like in avian epidermis, the production of lipids is high in bat keratinocytes, and multilamellar bodies discharge lipids extra- and intra-cellularly. This may compensate the lack of a thick fat layer in the dermis of the flying membrane as lipids may help in thermical insulation against the cooling air currents flowing on the bat skin during flight. Fur hairs are very thin （4 - 7 μm）, and they have an elaborated cuticle made of pointed expansions similar in texture with that of the cortex. Cuticle ceils form hook-like grasping points that allow to keep hairs stuck together. In this way the pelage remains compact in order to maintain body temperature.

A semi-empirical model for top-down cracking depth evolution in thick asphalt pavements with open-graded friction courses

Thick asphalt pavements with open-graded friction course(OGFC) are exposed to topdown cracking(TDC), a distress consisting of longitudinal cracks that initiate on the pavement surface close to the wheel path and propagate downwards. The main objective of this study is to develop a semi-empirical model for the prediction of TDC depth evolution for such pavements. For this purpose, a series of cores were taken from different Italian motorway pavements affected by TDC and analyzed in the laboratory. Cracked cores taken from the wheel path area were analyzed to determine TDC depth, whereas intact cores taken from the middle of the lane(not affected by traffic loadings) were tested to obtain the volumetric and mechanical properties of the OGFC mixture. The proposed model, developed on the basis of the results already available in literature and on the findings of the laboratory investigation, predicts the evolution of TDC depth as a function of the applied traffic loadings(in terms of 12-ton fatigue equivalent single axle loads, i.e., ESALs). The model is sigmoidal with a maximum TDC depth assumed equal to 150 mm. The shape parameter of the sigmoidal function depends on the indirect tensile strength(ITS) of the OGFC mixtures(which takes into account indirectly also the volumetrics and stiffness of the OGFC), whereas the evolutive translation factor depends on the age of the OGFC mixture. After excluding some outliers, the model was able to predict the measured TDC depth very well. Moreover, in-situ observations allowed a preliminary validation of the proposed model. This model can be used in pavement management systems(PMSs) to plan surface repairs due to TDC in a timely manner, thus minimizing pavement damage and maintenance costs.

After more than 50 years since Fisher and Adams’original description in 1964,1 transient global amnesia(TGA)is still a puzzling *** time,several mechanisms have been proposed for TGA pathogenesis,including venous congestion,cortical spreading depression,seizures and arterial ischaemia.2–4 A sufficient amount of studies in favour and against each of these mechanisms has emerged,fostering uncertainty regarding aetiology as well as *** this extent,most of the controversy stands on whether TGA represents a risk factor for stroke,or whether this is just as benign as originally thought.
