Commentary Most would agree that providing comprehensive detail in scientific reporting is critical for the development of mean- ingful therapies and treatments for diseases. Such stellar practices 1） allow for reproduction of experiments to con- firm results, 2） promote thorough analyses of data, and 3） foster the incremental advancement of valid approaches. Unfortunately, most would also agree we have far to go to reach this vital goal （Hackam and Redelmeier, 2006; Prinz et al., 2011; Baker et al., 2014）.

Proteoglycans in the central nervous system play integral roles as ＂traffic signals＂ for the direction of neurite outgrowth. This attribute of proteoglycans is a major factor in regeneration of the injured central nervous system. In this review, the structures of proteoglycans and the evidence suggesting their involvement in the response following spinal cord injury are presented. The review further describes the methods routinely used to determine the effect proteoglycans have on neurite outgrowth. The effects of proteoglycans on neurite outgrowth are not completely understood as there is disagreement on what component of the molecule is interacting with growing neurites and this ambiguity is chronicled in an historical context. Finally, the most recent findings suggesting possible receptors, interactions, and sulfation patterns that may be important in eliciting the effect of proteoglycans on neurite outgrowth are discussed. A greater understanding of the proteoglycan-neurite interaction is necessary for successfully promoting regeneration in the iniured central nervous system.

The pathophysiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis （ALS） is particularly challenging due to the heteroge- neity of its clinical presentation and the diversity of cellular, molecular and genetic peculiarities involved. Molecular insights unveiled several novel genetic factors to be inherent in both familial and sporadic dis- ease entities, whose characterizations in terms of phenotype prediction, pathophysiological impact and putative prognostic value are a topic of current researches. However, apart from genetically well-defined high-confidence and other susceptibility loci, the role of DNA damage and repair strategies of the genome as a whole, either elicited as a direct consequence of the underlying genetic mutation or seen as an autono- mous parameter, in the initiation and progression of ALS, and the different cues involved in either process are still incompletely understood. This mini review summarizes current knowledge on DNA alterations and counteracting DNA repair strategies in ALS pathology and discusses the putative role of unconventional DNA entities including transposable elements and extrachromosomal circular DNA in the disease process. Focus is set on SODl-related pathophysiology, with extension to FUS, TDP-43 and C90RF72 mutations. Advancing our knowledge in the field will contribute to an improved understanding of this relentless dis- ease, for which therapeutic options others than symptomatic approaches are almost unavailable.

Advancing biotechnologies are revolutionizing not only health and medicine, but also many different sectors such as agriculture,energy, chemistry, and textiles. As synthetic biology is leveraged as a programmable platform for the creation and biodesign ofhigh-value biological medicines, foods, and commodities, the world is facing new territory in terms of ensuring the safety andsecurity of both novel and engineered biological organisms, as well as the biological and digital platforms in which they aredesigned. Biosecurity practices and policies have traditionally revolved around preventing the misuse of biological pathogens,primarily through controlling access to pathogens. The advent of biodesign capabilities, such as gene editors, gene synthesiscapabilities, and genetic engineering, requires a reevaluation of traditional biosecurity policies to mitigate risks associated withsuch engineering of biological entities. Here, features of “Biosecurity by Design” approaches are described, including theapplication of risk/benefit analysis and risk mitigation, post-COVID opportunities, and ethical global norms in the progressionof biodesign and growing bioeconomies.

Current practice for intraocular lens （IOL） exchange is to cut the optic of the posterior chamber intraocular lens （PCIOL） prior to removing it. Great care must be taken during this maneuver to avoid a posterior capsular tear. Removing the haptics from the fibrosed capsule can also be hazardous, as it may result in zonular stress and dehiscence. A technique is described for performing foldable （one-piece acrylic） IOL removal without cutting the optic. Careful visco-dissection of the haptics with a low viscosity ophthalmic viscosurgical device （OVD） in the fibrosed peripheral capsular tunnel avoids zonular or capsular stress. Internal wound enlargement permits foldable IOL removal in one piece, whilst preserving a self-sealing sutureless corneal wound. This technique may enhance the safety and efficacy of foldable IOL exchange.

金融发展对撒哈拉以南非洲国家收入不平等的影响研究

由于收入不平等会导致地区经济增长乏力、贫困加剧等现象,如何降低贫富差距逐渐成为世界各国政府重点关注的议题。已有研究发现金融发展与收入不平等之间具有相关性,但受制于人力资本与国际资本投资的不足,撒哈拉以南的非洲国家金融行业远远落后于其他国家的金融发展水平。因此围绕缓解撒哈拉以南国家收入不平等问题,开展金融发展对所在地区收入不平等现象的影响研究,具有重要的研究特色。本研究将以27个撒哈拉以南的非洲国家为样本,基于2000-2015年的面板数据来探讨该地区的金融发展水平对收入不平等的影响。首先,本文对与金融发展和收入不平等有关的研究进行了回顾,并分别从线性关系与非线性关系两个视角对既有文献进行了归纳,前者细分为金融发展会加剧/减缓收入不平等,后者则细分为金融发展与收入不平等之间呈（倒）U型曲线。在此基础上,本研究结合撒哈拉以南的非洲国家特征,提出了本文的待检验假设。其次,基于WDI2018和2020、IFS2018和SWIID2016的数据,本研究分别使用货币供应量、私人信贷、流动负债、银行存款4个指标测度金融发展水平及使用基尼系数测度收入不平等,并采用GMM模型进行回归估计与稳健性检验以验证研究假说。再者,本研究进一步探讨了语言这一非制度因素与“一带一路”倡议对非洲撒哈拉以南国家金融发展与收入不平等关系的调节作用,并基于2SLS模型进行了检验。研究发现:（1）撒哈拉以南非洲国家金融发展有利于降低收入不平等现象;（2）与以英语为主要语言国家相比,以法语为主要语言的撒哈拉以南的非洲国家的私人信贷和流动负债的提高有利于缓解收入不平等;（3）“一带一路”倡议的提出没有加剧金融发展对收入不平等的缓解作用。本研究结果对改进非洲撒哈拉以南国家降低收入不平衡提供了理论指导与经验证据。
