Manganese oxides in association with paleo-weathering may provide significant insights into the multiple factors affecting the formation and evolution of weathering profiles, such as temperature, precipitation, and biodiversity. Laser probe step-heating analysis of supergene hollandite and cryptomelane samples collected from central Queensland, Australia, yield well-defined plateaus and consistent isochron ages, confirming the feasibilityy dating very-fined supergene manganese oxides by 40Ar/39 Ar technique. Two distinct structural sites hosting Ar isotopes can be identified in light of their degassing behaviors obtained by incremental heating analyses. The first site, releasing its gas fraction at the laser power 0.2-0.4 W, yields primarily 40Aratm, 38Aratm, and 36Aratm(atmospheric Ar isotopes). The second sites yield predominantly 40Ar*(radiogenic 40Ar), 39Ark, and Ark (nucleogenic components), at -0.5-1.0 W. This paper addresses the present-day context of Systems Engineering, revisiting and setting up an updated framework for the SIMILAR process in order to use it to engineer the contemporary systems. The contemporary world is crowded of large interdisciplinary complex systems made of other systems, personnel, hardware, software, information, processes, and facilities. An integrated holistic approach is crucial to develop these systems and take proper account of their multifaceted nature and numerous interrelationships. As the system＇s complexity and extent grow, the number of parties involved （stakeholders and shareholders） usually also raises, bringing to the interaction a considerable amount of points of view, skills, responsibilities, and interests. The Systems Engineering approach aims to tackle the complex and interdisciplinary whole of those socio-technical systems, providing the means to enable their successful realization. Its exploitation in our modern world is assuming an increasing relevance noticeable by emergent standards, academic papers, international conferences, and post-graduate programmes in the field. This work aims to provide ＂the picture＂ of modern Systems Engineering, and to update the context of the SIMILAR process model in order to use this renewed framework to engineer the challenging contemporary systems. The emerging trends in the field are also pointed-out with particular reference to the Model-Based Systems Engineering approach.

The influence of different factors on the fiuidization of a binary mixture of sisal residue and sand was *** particle sizes of the sand and sisal residue were varied from 0.2to 0.8mm and the biomass mass fractions from 2% to 9%.Some segregation was noted,and a significant relationship was found among the final fluidization velocity (Uff),the biomass and sand sizes,and the biomass mass fraction.A novel model was developed for predicting Uff,leading to an average discrepancy of 12.69% between the measured and predicted Uff compared with the best match of 15.32% when using a model from a previous *** new model was applied to data from studies using other biomass and a broad range of particle *** average divergences from measured values when using the new model were 7.9% for corn cob and walnut shell,and 20.5% for sweet sorghum bagasse,tobacco residue, and soy *** were superior to the values derived using other *** results confirm the accuracy of the model developed in this work and show that it represents a viable alternative way to calculate Uff for a binary mixture of sand and biomass.

Neonates are at increased risk of viral encephalopathies that can result in neurological dysfunction, seizures, permanent disability and even death. The neurological damage results from the combined effect of the virus and the immune response it elicits, thus finding tools to facilitate viral clearance from central nervous system （CNS） while minimizing neuron damage remains a critical challenge. Neonatal mice inoculated intraperitoneally with Tacaribe virus （TCRV） develop seizures, hindlimb paralysis and death within 15 days of inoculation. TCRV localizes to the CNS within days of challenge, primarily infecting astrocytes in the cerebellum and brain stem. We show that infection leads to inflammation, T cell and monocyte infiltration into the cerebellar parenchyma, apoptosis of astrocytes, neuronal degeneration and loss of Purkinje cells. Infiltrating antigen-specific T cells fail to clear the virus but drive the disease, as T-cell-deficient CD3ε KO mice survive TCRV infection with minimal inflammation or clinical manifestations despite no difference in CNS viral loads in comparison with T-cell sufficient mice. CD8＋ T cells drive the pathology, which even in the absence of CD4＋ T-cell help, infiltrate the parenchyma and mediate the apoptotic loss of cerebellar astrocytes, neurodegeneration and loss of Purkinje cells resulting in loss of balance, paralysis and death. CD4＋ T cells are also pathogenic inducing gliosis and inflammation in the cerebellum and cerebrum that are associated with wasting and death several weeks after CD4＋ T-cell transfer. These data demonstrate distinct pathogenic effects of CD4＋ and CD8＋ T cells and identify them as possible therapeutic targets.

Sol-gel glassy films of the SiO2-TiO2-PO2.5-ErO2.5 system containing nanocrystallites of ErPO4, were obtained through suitable heat treatments. Variations in the shape and intensity of the Er3＋ photoluminescent signal around 1500 nm were linked to the nature of the host environment of the active ions; the specific features of the photoluminescent emission spectrum of the erbium 4113/2 metastable level were interpreted in terms of structural changes in the glassy films. The photoluminescent spectrum was found to be sensitive to the order （crystalline） or disorder （amorphous） of the Er3＋ ions neighbour within the glassy matrix. An amorphous envi- ronment led to a broadening of Er3＋ PL emission band while a crystalline one was responsible for a drastic photoluminescent band- width narrowing. The presence of nanoscale heterogeneities caused a drastic photoluminescence intensity decrease. Changes in the shape of the decay curve of fluorescence lifetime were found also structurally dependent on volumetric defects, occurrence of phase separation and Er3＋-Er3＋ clustering effects as well.

Li_(6.4)La_(3)Zr_(1.4)Ta_(0.6)O_(12)(LLZTO) is a promising inorganic solid electrolyte due to its high Li+conductivity and electrochemical stability for all-solid-state *** characterization of LLZTO is limited by the synthesis of the condensed *** we systematically measure the elastic modules,hardness,and fracture toughness of LLZTO poly crystalline pellets of different densities using the customized environmental *** LLZTO samples are sintered using the hot-pressing method with different amounts of Li2CO3 additives,resulting in the relative density of the pellets varying from 83% to 98% and the largest grain size of 13.21 ± 5.22 μ*** mechanical properties show a monotonic increase as the sintered sample densifies,elastic modulus and hardness reach 158.47± 10.10 GPa and 11.27± 1.38 GPa,respectively,for LLZTO of 98% ***,fracture toughness increases from 0.44 to 1.51 MPa·m^(1/2),showing a transition from the intergranular to transgranular fracture behavior as the pellet density *** ionic conductivity reaches 4.54 × 10^(-4 )S/cm in the condensed LLZTO which enables a stable Li plating/stripping in a symmetric solid-state cell for over 100 *** study puts forward a quantitative study of the mechanical behavior of LLZTO of different microstructures that is relevant to the mechanical stability and electrochemical performance of all-solid-state batteries.
