Plant communities are shaped by multiple factors along environmental gradients;however,studies are limited on how environmental filtering drives community composition and species richness on tropical *** evaluate the influence of altitude and climatic variables related to temperature and precipitation on plant community composition and species richness on Brazilian *** assume as a premise that both climate and altitude would induce changes on plant community composition and species richness at the local *** used plant inventory data from 370 sampling units across four inselberg sites in the Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo State,south-eastern *** tested the univariate and multivariate effects of altitude and climate variables on community composition and species richness with multiple *** in species richness between inselbergs were evaluated using sample-based data to estimate rarefaction and extrapolation *** addition,differences in species composition and taxonomic beta diversity were examined via novel frequency-based metrics.A contrasting climate pattern was observed between the inselberg sites,with south sites being wet compared to the dry conditions found in northern *** richness by rarefaction showed a similar pattern within regional sites;however,there were marked differences between *** richness and beta diversity showed significant differences among sites,with higher values in southern sites than in northern *** a multi-model comparison between inselberg sites,altitude significantly influenced community composition and species richness and explained more variance than climate *** finding suggested that climate could act to some extent on these tropical inselbergs;however,altitude was a better predictor of plant community composition and species richness at the local level.

Dear Editor On July 29,2021,the Israeli Ministry of Health approved the third anti-Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)vaccination(3rd-BNT162b2-booster-dose),leading to a sharp daily drop in diagnosed positive COVID-19 cases and mortality rates in Israel[1].The booster dose increased severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)neutralization efficiency approximately a hundred-fold compared to individuals receiving only the second dose,providing significant protection against infection[2].

Leishmaniasis, a neglected disease caused by Leishmania protozoans, primarily affects people in tropical and subtropical areas. Chemotherapy based on the use of pentavalent antimonials, amphotericin B, paromomycin, miltefosine and liposomal amphotericin B is currently the only effective treatment. However, adverse effects, long-term treatment and the emergence of parasite resistance have led to the search for alternative treatments. Natural products used in traditional medicine provide an unlimited source of molecules for the identification of new drugs, and the Amazon region has abundant biodiversity that includes several species of plants and animals, providing a rich source of new products and com- pounds. Although the literature describes numerous promising compounds and extracts for combating Leishmania protozoans, the results of such research have not been embraced by the pharmaceutical industry for the development of new drugs. Therefore, this review focused on the antileishmanial activity of extracts, isolated compounds and essential oils commonly used by the local population in the Brazilian Amazonian region to treat several illnesses and described in the literature as promising compounds for combating leishmaniasis.

This work presents the preliminary results of the first field calibration campaign performed in the Atacama Desert,Chile,between the 18 and 22 August 2014,called the Atacama Field Campaign(ATAFIC 2014).In situ measurements were performed in order to spectrally characterize the surface reflectance spectra between 0.3 and 2.5μm,radiometric temperature(8.0–14.0μm)and atmospheric measurements.A soil sample was collected and analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction techniques to characterize the surface reflectance spectra and mineralogical composition,*** land surface emissivity in addition to GOES,MODIS and Landsat-8 land surface temperature(LST)were also *** showed that the spectral features of the Atacama soil and the characteristics of this geographical zone,which is featured as the most hyper-arid and cloudless place in the world,make this area a potential target for surface reflectance *** and night LST comparison between field and remote sensing data are lower than 2 K and the Root Mean Square Error for land surface emissivity is close to 2%.This work opens the possibilities to consider the Atacama Desert as a reference target for calibration and validation activities for earth observation missions’purposes.

Fecal marker levels as predictors of need for endoscopic balloon dilation in Crohn's disease patients with anastomotic strictures

AIM To evaluate the accuracy and best cut-off value of fecal calprotectin(FC) and fecal lactoferrin(FL) to predict disease recurrence in asymptomatic patients presenting with anastomotic strictures. METHODS This was a longitudinal single tertiary center study based on prospectively collected data(recorded in a clinical database created for this purpose) performed between March 2010 and November 2014. Crohn's disease(CD) patients with anastomotic stricture who submitted to postoperative endoscopic evaluation were included. Stools were collected on the day before bowel cleaning for FC and FL. Endoscopic balloon dilation(EBD) was performed if the patient presented an anastomotic stricture not traversed by the colonoscope, regardless of patients' symptoms. Successful dilation was defined as passage of the colonoscope through the dilated stricture into the neotermimal *** recurrence was defined as a modified Rutgeerts score of ≥ i2 b. RESULTS In a total of 178 patients who underwent colonoscopy, 58 presented an anastomotic stricture, 86% were asymptomatic, and 48(54% male; median age of 46.5 years) were successfully dilated. Immediate success rate was 92% and no complications were recorded. FC and FL levels correlated significantly with endoscopic recurrence(P < 0.001) with an optimal cut-off value of 90.85 μg/g(sensitivity of 95.5%, specificity of 69.2%, positive predictive value(PPV) of 72.4%, negative predictive value(NPV) of 94.7% and accuracy of 81%] for FC and of 5.6 μg/g(sensitivity of 77.3%, specificity of 69.2%, PPV of 68%, NPV of 78.4% and accuracy of 72.9%) for *** Fecal markers are good predictors of CD endoscopic recurrence in patients with asymptomatic anastomotic stricture. FC and FL may guide the need for EBD in this context.

Mg-Zn-Zr(ZK)alloys exhibit notably high mechanical strength amongst all magnesium alloy ***,due to the formation of low melting point Mg_3Zn_7-precipitates,these alloys are susceptible to hot cracking,thus compromising their metallurgical *** addition of rare earths to ZK alloys is an alternative to form higher melting point intermetallic compounds,speed up dynamic recrystallization,refine grain size,enhance corrosion resistance and extend the service temperature due to improved creep *** work deals with the effect of Ce-base mischmetal addition on the hot rolling behaviour of as-cast ZK60 *** microstructure investigation conducted using electron microscopy and X-Ray diffraction shows that precipitation of Mg_(7)Zn_(3) intermetallics occur during hot rolling,whereas no further precipitation is observed for the ZK60-Mm *** fragmentation of the intermetallic compounds occur during hot rolling and finer particles of Mg_(7)Zn_(3) are observed for the ZK60,whereas Mg_(7)Zn_(3) and Mg Zn_(2) Ce intermetallics are formed in the alloy modified with mischmetal addition.A higher fraction of dynamically recrystallized grains is observed for the ZK60-Mm in comparison to the *** recrystallization takes place in ZK60 with the formation of sub-grains near to the intermetallics and the addition of mischmetal promotes the occurrence of discontinuous recrystallization with the nucleation of new grains close to the *** mechanical strength and,in particular,the ductility of the hot-rolled alloys are notably improved when compared to the same alloys in the as-cast *** mechanical strength is,however,higher for the ZK60 *** solid solution strengthening,softer Mg Zn_(2) Ce intermetallics and more extensive recrystallization contribute to reduce the mechanical strength of *** in both alloys are initiated at coarse intermetallics and propagate through intermetallic-rich regions.

Spectral reflectance indices as proxies for yield potential and heat stress tolerance in spring wheat: heritability estimates and marker-trait associations

The application of spectral reflectance indices(SRIs) as proxies to screen for yield potential(YP) and heat stress(HS) is emerging in crop breeding ***, a comparison of SRIs and their associations with grain yield(GY) under YP and HS conditions is *** this study, we assessed the usefulness of 27 SRIs for indirect selection for agronomic traits by evaluating an elite spring wheat association mapping initiative(WAMI) population comprising 287 elite lines under YP and HS *** and phenotypic analysis identified 11 and 9 SRIs in different developmental stages as efficient indirect selection indices for yield in YP and HS conditions,*** identified enhanced vegetation index(EVI) as the common SRI associated with GY under YP at booting, heading and late heading stages, whereas photochemical reflectance index(PRI) and normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) were the common SRIs under booting and heading stages in *** association study(GWAS) using 18704 single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) from Illumina i Select90 K identified 280 and 43 marker-trait associations for efficient SRIs at different developmental stages under YP and HS, *** genomic regions for multiple SRIs were identified in 14 regions in 9 chromosomes: 1 B(60–62 cM), 3 A(15, 85–90, 101–105 cM), 3 B(132–134 cM), 4 A(47–51 cM), 4 B(71–75 cM), 5 A(43–49, 56–60, 89–93 cM), 5 B(124–125 cM),6 A(80–85 cM), and 6 B(57–59, 71 cM).Among them,SNPs in chromosome 5 A(89–93 cM) and 6 A(80–85 cM)were co-located for yield and yield related ***,this study highlights the utility of SRIs as proxies for GY under YP and *** heritability estimates and identification of marker-trait associations indicate that SRIs are useful tools for understanding the genetic basis of agronomic and physiological traits.

Iron homeostasis and H63D mutations in alcoholics with and without liver disease

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of HFE gene mutation and indices of disturbed iron homeostasis in alcoholics with and without liver ***: One hundred and fifty-three heavy drinkers (defined as alcohol consumption > 80 g/d for at least 5 years) were included in the study. These comprised 78 patients with liver disease [liver disease alcoholics (LDA)] in whom the presence of liver disease was confirmed by liver biopsy or clinical evidence of hepatic decompensation, and 75 subjects with no evidence of liver disease, determined by normal liver tests on two occasions [non-liver disease alcoholics (NLDA)], were consecutively enrolled. Serum markers of iron status and HFE C282Y and H63D mutations were determined. HFE genotyping was compared with data obtained in healthy blood donors from the same geographical ***: Gender ratio was similar in both study groups. LDA patients were older than NLDA patients (52 ± 10 years vs 48 ± 11 years, P = 0.03). One third and one fi fth of the study population had serum transferrin saturation (TS) greater than 45% and 60% respectively. Serum iron levels were similar in both groups. However, LDA patients had higher TS (51 ± 27 vs 36 ± 13, P < 0.001) and ferritin levels (559 ± 607 ng/mL vs 159 ± 122 ng/mL, P < 0.001), and lower total iron binding capacity (TIBC) (241 ± 88 μg/dL vs 279 ± 40 μg/dL, P = 0.001). The odds ratio for having liver disease with TS greater than 45% was 2.20 (95% confi dence interval (CI): 1.37-3.54). There was no difference in C282Y allelic frequency between the two groups. However, H63D was more frequent in LDA patients (0.25 vs 0.16, P = 0.03). LDA patients had a greater probability of carrying at least one HFE mutation than NLDA patients (49.5% vs 31.6%, P = 0.02). The odds ratio for LDA in patients with H63D mutation was 1.57 (95% CI: 1.02-2.40).CONCLUSION: The present study confirms the presence of iron overload in alcoholics, which was more severe in the subset of subjects with liver disease,

TGF-beta receptor mediated telomerase inhibition, telomere shortening and breast cancer cell senescence

Human telomerase reverse transcriptase （hTERT） plays a central role in telomere lengthening for continuous cell proliferation, but it remains unclear how extracellular cues regulate telomerase lengthening of telomeres. Here we report that the cytokine bone morphogenetic protein-7 （BMP7） induces the hTERT gene repression in a BMPRII receptor- and Smad3-dependent manner in human breast cancer cells. Chonic exposure of human breast cancer cells to BMP7 results in short telomeres, cell senescence and apoptosis. Mutation of the BMPRII receptor, but not TGFbRII, ACTRIIA or ACTRIIB receptor, inhibits BMP7-induced repression of the hTERT gene promoter activity, leading to increased telomerase activity, lengthened telomeres and continued cell proliferation. Expression of hTERT prevents BMP7-induced breast cancer cell senescence and apoptosis. Thus, our data suggest that BMP7 induces breast cancer cell aging by a mechanism involving BMPRII receptor- and Smad3-mediated repression of the hTERT gene.
