Lipase and Phospholipase in the Hydrolysis of Lipids in Wastewater from Swine Slaughterhouse and Subsequent Biological Treatment Study

Wastewaters from slaughterhouses are characterized by a high concentration of oils and greases that can cause problems in conventional treatments. The degradation of difficult pollutants in more easily degradable products can be mediated by enzymes. Enzymatic hydrolysis facilitates the biodegradation because it makes the organic material is made available as compounds of lower molecular weight, the lipids being made available in the form of free fatty acids. The application of enzymes as processing aids in wastewater treatment has some advantages, such as the specificity that allows control of the products, which leads to increased income generation for the non-toxic byproducts and moderate conditions of operation. The objective of this work was optimizing the conditions for lipids enzymatic hydrolysis present in swine slaughterhouse wastewaters using lipolytic enzymes and subsequent biological treatment study. Temperature, pH and enzyme concentration were the variables tested. The enzymes showed good activity and could therefore be used for the hydrolysis process proposed here. The optimized conditions to maximize the release of fatty acids were： temperature of 36 ℃, pH 8.5 and enzyme concentration of 1.1%, yielding fatty acids in the order of 31.50μmol/mL for lipase and 31.13 μmol/mL for phospholipase. All variables influenced the release of fatty acids. The maximum yield of biogas was 89.65 mL in the reactor added the sludge, raw wastewater and phospholipase in the conditions optimized the hydrolysis step, obtaining a chemical oxygen demand （COD） reduction of 90.01% in relation to the value of the COD of the raw wastewater.

Fertility Care Provided by a Public Health Hospital to Viral-Infected Couples: A Case-Control Study

Objective: To evaluate the results of ART (clinical pregnancies and baby home rates) in couples infected with HBV, HCV, HIV or mixed in a Referral center. Patients: The study is a retrospective case-control study comprising 1587 cycles/1064 couples in the control group and 237 cycles/164 couples in the infected group, submitted to in vitro fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection and embryo transfer. Two branches from the infected group were created: the HIV subgroup, comprising couples with one or both partners infected with HIV-1 (84 cycles/67 couples), and the HCV subgroup, including at least one partner infected with HCV (45 cycles/29 couples). Results: The infected group presented higher infertility duration (P P P P P = 0.01) subgroups. Oocytes and oocytes in metaphase II numbers were lower in the infected group, but not in the HIV and HCV subgroups. Clinical pregnancy rate was lower in the infected group (25.74%) when compared to the control (34.66%), probably due to the contribution of HCV individuals (17.78%), but not of HIV (28.57%). Baby home rate was lower in the infected group

The Culture of Resilience： Providing Solutions for Urban Space Vulnerability to Recurrent Unfavourable Climatic Phenomena

Urban spaces vulnerable to recurrent adverse climatic phenomena present specific, consecutive problems, requiring a reflective view of their socio-spatial reality. This article presents a case study about the towns of Amadora, Greater Lisbon, and Petr6polis, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, which, originally, bore a common Portuguese urbanistic praxis. Their urban contexts are characterized by the occurrence of extreme risks of flooding and landslides caused by intense rainfall. Both places feature aggravation of the risks due to accelerated urban growth and disorderly land occupation. From the phenomenological perspective, what happens to the human being leads to fruitful and/or dramatic experiences. The important point is that there occurs learning for favourable action, with solutions for each individual and for ＂the other＂. Thus, it is proposed to qualitatively analyse, with a posture that values the community experience and urban practices of the towns that contribute to the development of the culture of resilience which promotes practices of prevention, precaution and vigilance founded on the experience of communities that have been exposed. Besides this, it is intended to verify challenges in the implementation of public policies aimed at sustainable urban development, those that contemplate, among others： risk management action to deal with natural disasters.

Can Persistent Children Hyperglycemia Be Induced by Causes Other Than Pancreas Failure?

In this work, children’s persistent hyperglycemia has been revised using the available literature to support the proposed reasoning. Based on this study, we have shown that the human glycemic management system must be seen as coupled and integrated by four subsystems, namely, production system, consumption system, distribution system, control system, and also it should be seen as coupled to external noxious factors/stressors, if not we show that the glycemic homeostasis analysis might be defective and might induce, in many cases, a misdiagnosis of the causes of the persistent hyperglycemia under consideration. Also, in this work, some considerations were presented to show that anomalies in the cerebral glycemic control through the glucose sensor neurons might be a possible cause/origin of some of the glycemic abnormalities and dysfunctions (however, not only the known related hypoglycemia but also hyperglycemia) that occur in childhood. Finally, it is shown that persistent novel external noxious factors of modernity or noxious factors already known, but amplified by modernity, such as persistent stress, media induced fears, and phobias, environmental pollution, and electromagnetic pollution, can and should also be considered as possible precursors for the development of anomalies in the juvenile homeostatic glycemic system that might well be, if intense and persistent, the driver of the worldwide observed T1DM epidemic events.

Biological Inspiration—Theoretical Framework Mitosis Artificial Neural Networks Unsupervised Algorithm

The modified approach to conventional Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) described in this paper represents an essential departure from the conventional techniques of structural analysis. It has four main distinguishing features: 1) it introduces a new simulation algorithm based on the biology;2) it performs relatively simple arithmetic as massively parallel, during analysis of a structure;3) it shows that it is possible to use the application of the modified approach to conventional ANN to solve problems of any complexity in the field of structural analysis;4) the Neural Topologies for Structural Analysis (NTSA) system are recurrent networks and its outputs are connected to its inputs [1] and [2]. In NTSA system the DNA of the neuron mother and daughters would be defined by: 1) the same entry, from the corresponding neuron in the previous layer;2) the same trend vector;3) the same transfer function (purelin). The mother’s neuron and her daughter’s neuron differ only in the connection weight and its output signal.

Biogas in Brazil： A Governmental Agenda

Environmental issues have become an important aspect in the energy sector and also in governmental policies all over the world. Renewable energy plays a decisive role in a cleaner energy production with less environmental impacts. In this new world scenario, several countries create incentive programs aiming to increase the renewable energy share in their energy balance. Biogas is an interesting example of a smart and rational use of organic waste material. Nevertheless, international experience shows that its production relays mainly on government incentives. This paper investigates what the Brazilian government role is to introduce and promote the biogas industry in the country. We estimate the production of agricultural waste energy using biogas derived from cattle and swine waste and analyze the Brazilian legal and regulatory framework for renewable energy, focusing on biogas production, transport and sale. The results point to an unexplored potential of the use of cattle and swine waste for biogas production in Brazil. However, this potential can only become a reality if some legal and regulatory issues are solved. Brazilian government agenda has to include not only filling the legal and regulatory blanks but also creating incentives for the use of biogas.

Technique to Obtain Mitotic Chromosomes of <i>Conyza bonariensis</i>L. Cronquist (Asteraceae)

Cytogenetic analysis requires cytological preparations that unequivocally reveal the chromosome number and permit optimal visualizations of chromosome morphology for the construction of karyotypes and ideograms. Chromosomal characterization is possible only by establishing these two parameters. To cytogenetically characterize the weed Conyza bonariensis (L.) Cronquist (Asteraceae), it was necessary to improve cytological analysis techniques to obtain optimal results. This species belongs to a genus whose plants have wide phenotypic plasticity. These plants can be morphologically differentiated by other types of analysis, and thus the application of this technique will serve as a reference for cytogenetical analysis of other groups of plants that have cytogenetic characteristics similar to those of C. bonariensis. The methodology described here highlights three main protocol steps: 1) root tip collection from newly germinated seed radicles and from young root tips of mature plants, 2) pretreatment of meristems with antimitotic agents, both isolated and combined, and 3) acid and enzymatic hydrolytic processes.

The Human PsB-ATPase ATP13A2 Is Not a Ca2＊ Transporting Pump

The human gene ATP 13A2 has been proposed to code for an ATP powered ion transporter of the PsB subfamily. Mutations of the human gene ATP1 3A2 were found to underlie an autosomal recessive form of early-onset parkinsonism （PD） with pyramidal degeneration and dementia. The ion transported by the ATP13A2 pump is not known, but several studies have shown that the Ps-ATPases influence the homeostasis of intracellular Ca2＋, and thus it has been suggested that they transport Ca2＋. In order to evaluate this possibility Chinese hamster ovary （CHO） cells stably expressing the human ATP13A2 protein have been obtained and the Ca2＋ transport activity of ATP 13A2 was assessed by measuring the ATP-dependent uptake of Ca2＋ into microsomal vesicles. As a positive control vesicles containing the human plasma membrane Ca2＋ pump （PMCA） were used. No significant differences were found between vesicles containing the ATP 13A2 protein and the control. Moreover, Ca2＋ was unable to induce the formation of the P-ATPase acylphosphate intermediate in vesicles containing the expressed ATPl3A2. These results favor the idea that the ATPI3A2 does not transport Ca2＋.
