Long-read sequencing with nanopore technology has been widely utilized for the identification of the full-length sequence of RNA molecules."It is especially suitable for the identification of circular RNAs(circRNAs),which are regulatory molecules that are regarded as promising non-invasive biomarkers for various human malignancies,including breast cancer.2 The impact of circRNAs derived from the protein arginine methyltransferase 1(PRMT1)gene has not been clarified yet,even though the effect of PRMT1-mediated methylation on breast cancer cell characteristics has been well established.

Purpose: To point out the indications for the use of the Anterior Chamber Maintainer (ACM) in order to facilitate cataract surgery in selective cases. Materials and Methods: In a time interval of 4 years the ACM was used in 28 special cataract cases 17 patients had high myopia (12 - 25 dpt, axial length 28 - 34 mm), 3 patients had vitreo-retinal pathology known pre-operatively and 8 cases were previously vitrectomized with silicon oil. In these cases the ACM was introduced either from the beginning or during the surgical procedure when excessive fluctuations of the Anterior Chamber (AC) were observed. Results: Though the new generation phaco machines tend to maintain the stability of the AC, the use of the ACM contributed to even greater stability during the insertion and the removal of probes and during the whole procedure, eliminating the risk of complications. All these risky cases were accomplished without intraoperative complications. The surgeons experienced a sense of increased safety during the procedure. Conclusions: The use of the ACM in cataract cases with high risk for complications offers a much greater stability of the AC, by eliminating the fluctuations of the posterior capsule and consequently prevents intraoperative and potentially postoperative complications.

Visual Allesthesia in a Patient with Glioblastoma Multiforme

Purpose: To report a rare case of visual allesthesia in a patient with glioblastoma multiforme. Material - Methods : A 46 – year old male presented in emergency ophthalmologic department complaining for difficulties in performing tasks related to color discrimination in his occupation (PC technician). The patient underwent a thorough ophthalmological examination and then he was referred to the neurological department for further evaluation. Results: The patient presented an atypical pattern of color perception disturbance. His best corrected visual acuity decreased progressively during hospitalization. He also experienced visual allesthesia paroxysmally (illusory left homonymous transpositions of subjects viewed in the right homonymous visual field). The visual field evaluation revealed homonymous left hemianopsia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed glioblastoma multiforme confirmed by biopsy. Conclusions: A thorough ophthalmological and neuro-imaging control is suggested in patients with sudden color perception disturbance. Patients with temporal or occipital cortex damage may experience visual allesthesia.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common autoimmune disease. Ocular manifestations of this autoimmune disease vary and are mainly keratoconjunctivitis sicca, episcleritis, scleritis and keratitis. Their appearance, as well as their severity are related to RA chronicity and resistance to therapy. The treatment consists of corticosteroids, NSAIDs and cytotoxic drugs, depending on the type of ocular manifestations and the patient’s response to treatment.

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of commonly used eye drops on contrast sensitivity (CS). Design: Prospective study. Participants: One hundred twenty volunteers (120) were enrolled. Methods: The CS of ophthalmologically healthy individuals was evaluated at baseline examination before the instillation, 20 and 40 minutes after the instillation of diclofenac sodium and commonly used antiglaucoma eye drops (latanoprost, brimonidine tartrate, combination of dorzolamide hydrochloride and timolol maleate). CS was assessed at 7 spatial frequencies varying from 1.5 c/d to 20 c/d by the use of Mentor B-VAT II-SG video acuity tester. Results: Diclofenac sodium induced a mild, however statistically significant decrease on the CS in 4 out of 30 subjects 20 minutes after instillation at the spatial frequency of 1.5 c/d and 3 c/d (p p > 0.05). Brimonidine tartrate decreased CS in 4 out of 30 subjects 20 minutes after the instillation at a high spatial frequency (20 c/d) yet this decrease was marginally statistically significant (p = 0.057). CS returned to baseline scores 40 minutes after the instillation for all drugs. Conclusions: Diclofenac sodium eye drops had a mild temporal effect on the low spatial frequencies of 1.5 c/d and 3 c/d in some individuals. Latanoprost and dorzolamide/timolol had a non-statistically significant effect on the same spatial frequencies. Brimonidine eye drops had a temporal effect on the high spatial frequency of 20 c/d with marginal statistical significance. The CS scores returned to normal, in all cases, within the next 40 minutes after the instillation. Ophthalmologists should be aware of the fact that some eye drops may have an influence on CS.

The uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of intact rock is one of the most important parameters required and determined for rock mechanics studies in engineering *** limitations and difficulty of conducting tests on rocks,specifically on thinly bedded,highly fractured,highly porous and weak rocks,as well as the fact that these tests are destructive,expensive and time-consuming,lead to development of soft computing-based *** of artificial neural networks(ANNs)for predicting UCS has become an attractive alternative for geotechnical engineering *** this study,an ANN was designed with the aim of indirectly predicting UCS through the serpentinization percentage,and physical,dynamic and mechanical characteristics of *** this purpose,data obtained in earlier experimental work from central Greece were *** ANN-based results were compared with the experimental ones and those obtained from previous *** proposed ANN-based formula was found to be very efficient in predicting UCS values and the samples could be classified with simple physical,dynamic and mechanical tests,thus the expensive,difficult,time-consuming and destructive mechanical tests could be avoided.

We studied the damage caused to unfelled trees during skidding operations in four beech stands of northern and central Greece that were managed under differing harvesting *** timber was harvested we recorded and analyzed all damage to a width of 2 m along both sides of the skid *** percentage of damaged residual trees was 17–28 %.Higher numbers of saplings were uprooted or destroyed in parts of the stands with high natural *** damaged trees suffered 1.33–1.90 wounds that were inflicted up to a height of 1 m above ground *** all sites mean wound sizes were large,89–1190 cm2,and caused elevated risk of future fungal *** damage caused by skidding during timber harvesting can be minimized by better planning the harvest operations,and training forest workers in reduced impact logging.

The concept of textbook outcome (TO) has recently gained popularity in surgicalresearch and has been used to evaluate the quality or success of different surgicalprocedures, including hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) operations. TO consists ofindividual outcome parameters that each reflect different domains of careincluding structure, process, and individual outcomes;in turn, the composite TOmetric represents the optimal course after a surgical episode. TO can be used toassess patient-level outcomes, hospital performance, center designation andquality metrics. In addition to being an outcome measurement, TO may also belinked to healthcare costs. Future efforts should be directed towards establishing auniversal definition of TO in HPB surgery so that surgeons and hospitals canassess and compare outcomes, identify shortcomings and improve real worldpatient outcomes.

Quality of life in patients with esophageal stenting for the palliation of malignant dysphagia

Incidence of esophageal cancer(EC) is rising more rapidly in the Western world than that of any other cancer. Despite advances in therapy,more than 50% of patients have incurable disease at the time of *** precludes curative treatment and makes palliative treatment a more realistic option for most of these patients. Dysphagia is the predominant symptom in more than 70% of patients with EC and although several management options have been developed in recent years to palliate this symptom,the optimum management is not ***-expanding metal stents(SEMS) are a well-established palliation modality for dysphagia in such ***-related quality of life(HRQoL) is becoming a major issue in the evaluation of any therapeuticor palliative *** date,only a few published studies can be found on Medline examining HRQoL in patients with advanced EC treated with SEMS *** aim of this study was to review the impact on HRQoL of SEMS implantation as palliative treatment in patients with *** Medline articles regarding HRQoL in patients with advanced EC,particularly those related to SEMS,were *** most studies,relief of dysphagia was the only aspect of HRQoL being measured and SEMS implantation was compared with other palliative treatments such as brachytherapy and laser therapy. SEMS insertion provides a swift palliation of dysphagia compared to brachytherapy and no evidence was found to suggest that stent implantation is different to laser treatment in terms of improving dysphagia,recurrent dysphagia and better HRQoL,although SEMS insertion has a better technical success rate and also reduces the number of repeat interventions.
