Automating Transfer Credit Assessment-A Natural Language Processing-Based Approach

Student mobility or academic mobility involves students moving between institutions during their post-secondary education,and one of the challenging tasks in this process is to assess the transfer credits to be offered to the incoming student.In general,this process involves domain experts comparing the learning outcomes of the courses,to decide on offering transfer credits to the incoming students.This manual implementation is not only labor-intensive but also influenced by undue bias and administrative complexity.The proposed research article focuses on identifying a model that exploits the advancements in the field of Natural Language Processing(NLP)to effectively automate this process.Given the unique structure,domain specificity,and complexity of learning outcomes(LOs),a need for designing a tailor-made model arises.The proposed model uses a clustering-inspired methodology based on knowledge-based semantic similarity measures to assess the taxonomic similarity of LOs and a transformer-based semantic similarity model to assess the semantic similarity of the LOs.The similarity between LOs is further aggregated to form course to course similarity.Due to the lack of quality benchmark datasets,a new benchmark dataset containing seven course-to-course similarity measures is proposed.Understanding the inherent need for flexibility in the decision-making process the aggregation part of the model offers tunable parameters to accommodate different levels of leniency.While providing an efficient model to assess the similarity between courses with existing resources,this research work also steers future research attempts to apply NLP in the field of articulation in an ideal direction by highlighting the persisting research gaps.

Offshore triceratops is one of the successful manifestations of the form-dominant design approaches deployable in ultra-deepwater oil and gas exploration.The deck’s geometric shape and partial isolation from the legs counteract lateral loads.Legs are position-restrained to the sea bed by taut-moored tendons,while ball joints partially isolate the deck from the buoyant legs.However,compliance in the horizontal plane imposes large displacements,intuiting the necessity to examine tendon failure.Numerical analysis of triceratops under wave and wind combined action is carried out under the postulated conditions of a tendon failure.10-yr,100-yr,and 1000-yr post-Katrina hurricane conditions are assumed as loading to the platform.Results confirm a marginal increase in the natural periods of stiff degrees of freedom even under postulated failure conditions,ensuring good adaptability to ultra-deep water.Under postulated failure,the tension of adjacent tendons varies significantly,causing a shift to the mean position of the platform.Fatigue life is significantly reduced under the postulated failure of tendons,making the platform free-floating without affecting its stability.Results also show that the pitch response of the deck is a clear manifestation of the postulated failure,which is otherwise absent due to the presence of ball joints.The attempted study deliberates on the fatigue life of tendons,assessing the platform’s suitability to ultra-deep waters and identifying the vulnerable legs for the chosen load combinations.

Quantifying Kinematic Tremor in an NGLY1-Deficient Individual: A Case Study

NGLY1 Deficiency is an autosomal recessive congenital disorder that has been identified in less than 100 individuals. Most individuals with NGLY1 Deficiency display hyperkinetic movement disorders, including choreiform, athetoid, dystonic myoclonic, dyskinetic, and dysmetric movements. Developing a consistent and concise consensus on the classification and evaluation of tremors is essential to forward the research and treatment of tremors. It has also been reported that some individuals with NGLY1 Deficiency demonstrate tremor, but such tremor has never been formally investigated. The primary objective of this study is to determine if an individual with NGLY1 Deficiency demonstrates an identifiable tremor during a series of arm movements and, if so, describe the frequency and power characteristics of that tremor. Arm movement kinematics were obtained using a 16-camera Vicon system, and time series trajectory waveforms for three planes of a marker placed on the hand were developed. Custom MATLAB scripts were utilized to compute Fast Fourier Transformations of the data within the identified waveform segments. A mean frequency of 2.30 Hz (SD = 1.05) with a mean power of 5.02 |P1(f)| (SD = 4.63) suggests that our participant’s kinematic data did display a persistent tremor in both hands across all tasks and movement planes. Analyses of the reaching hand and the non-reaching hand suggest the participant displayed an action tremor in both postural and intention (kinetic) tremors. Future directions should include assessing additional individuals with NGLY1 Deficiency to determine if the tremor is a distinguishable disorder behavior. Additionally, evaluating other anatomical sites, such as the elbow, head, and lower limbs, would provide further insights into the characteristics of this tremor.

NGLY1 Deficiency is an ultra-rare autosomal recessively inherited disorder. Characteristic symptoms include among others, developmental delays, movement disorders, liver function abnormalities, seizures, and problems with tear formation. Movements are hyperkinetic and may include dysmetric, choreo-athetoid, myoclonic and dystonic movement elements. To date, there have been no quantitative reports describing arm movements of individuals with NGLY1 Deficiency. This report provides quantitative information about a series of arm movements performed by an individual with NGLY1 Deficiency and an aged-matched neurotypical participant. Three categories of arm movements were tested: 1) open ended reaches without specific end point targets;2) goal-directed reaches that included grasping an object;3) picking up small objects from a table placed in front of the participants. Arm movement kinematics were obtained with a camera-based motion analysis system and “initiation” and “maintenance” phases were identified for each movement. The combination of the two phases was labeled as a “complete” movement. Three-dimensional analysis techniques were used to quantify the movements and included hand trajectory pathlength, joint motion area, as well as hand trajectory and joint jerk cost. These techniques were required to fully characterize the movements because the NGLY1 individual was unable to perform movements only in the primary plane of progression instead producing motion across all three planes of movement. The individual with NGLY1 Deficiency was unable to pick up objects from a table or effectively complete movements requiring crossing the midline. The successfully completed movements were analyzed using the above techniques and the results of the two participants were compared statistically. Almost all comparisons revealed significant differences between the two participants, with a notable exception of the 3D initiation area as a percentage of the complete movement. Microsurgical repair of severed thoracic spinal cord and clinical outcome:technical case report

Background:This report describes a case of successful repair of severed thoracic spine in a young man who presented with a penetrating stab injury to spine resulting in Brown-Séquard syndrome.Surgical technique and postoperative management is discussed.Case presentation:A 34-year-old fit and well healthy man was admitted with a history of stab injury to the thoracic spine at thoracic T2/3 level with ASIA impairment score(AIS)score D with an incomplete spinal cord affecting his left lower limb with complete paralysis and right lower limb paresis with impaired sensation below T6 level to L5.Neuroimaging confirmed a penetrating knife injury traversing the T2/3 level causing hemi-section of the spinal cord confirmed intraoperatively.He underwent an urgent exploratory surgery of his spine and a T2/3 laminectomy was performed to aid removal of the knife.The dura was noted to be contused and severed spinal cord was noted to be severed with associated cord oedema.A microsurgical repair of the severed cord was performed with duroplasty followed by intense neuro-rehabilitation.On a 3 month follow up his AIS score is E with lower limb power is 5/5 bilaterally and he is able to mobilise independently up to 8-10 steps without any supportive aid and with crutches he is independently functional and mobile.Conclusion:This is the first documented case of microsurgical repair of severed thoracic spinal cord secondary to traumatic knife injury.In the management of such scenario,apart from the removal of foreign body,repair of the cord with duroplasty should be carefully considered.The role of spinal neuroplasticity in healing following timely repair of the spinal cord along with intense rehabilitation remains the key.This had resulted in a good clinical and functional outcome with in a 18-month follow up.

Network Traffic Prediction Using Radial Kernelized-Tversky Indexes-Based Multilayer Classifier

Accurate cellular network traffic prediction is a crucial task to access Internet services for various devices at any time.With the use of mobile devices,communication services generate numerous data for every moment.Given the increasing dense population of data,traffic learning and prediction are the main components to substantially enhance the effectiveness of demand-aware resource allocation.A novel deep learning technique called radial kernelized LSTM-based connectionist Tversky multilayer deep structure learning(RKLSTM-CTMDSL)model is introduced for traffic prediction with superior accuracy and minimal time consumption.The RKLSTM-CTMDSL model performs attribute selection and classification processes for cellular traffic prediction.In this model,the connectionist Tversky multilayer deep structure learning includes multiple layers for traffic prediction.A large volume of spatial-temporal data are considered as an input-to-input layer.Thereafter,input data are transmitted to hidden layer 1,where a radial kernelized long short-term memory architecture is designed for the relevant attribute selection using activation function results.After obtaining the relevant attributes,the selected attributes are given to the next layer.Tversky index function is used in this layer to compute similarities among the training and testing traffic patterns.Tversky similarity index outcomes are given to the output layer.Similarity value is used as basis to classify data as heavy network or normal traffic.Thus,cellular network traffic prediction is presented with minimal error rate using the RKLSTM-CTMDSL model.Comparative evaluation proved that the RKLSTM-CTMDSL model outperforms conventional methods.

Rechargeable zinc-air batteries(ZABs)are a promising energy conversion device,which rely critically on electrocatalysts to accelerate their rate-determining reactions such as oxygen reduction(ORR)and oxygen evolution reactions(OER).Herein,we fabricate a range of bifunctional M-N-C(metal-nitrogen-carbon)catalysts containing M-Nx coordination sites and M/MxC nanoparticles(M=Co,Fe,and Cu)using a new class ofγ-cyclodextrin(CD)based metal-organic framework as the precursor.With the two types of active sites interacting with each other in the catalysts,the obtained Fe@C-FeNC and Co@C-CoNC display superior alkaline ORR activity in terms of low half-wave(E1/2)potential(~0.917 and 0.906 V,respectively),which are higher than Cu@C-CuNC(~0.829 V)and the commercial Pt/C(~0.861 V).As a bifunctional electrocatalyst,the Co@C-CoNC exhibits the best performance,showing a bifunctional ORR/OER overpotential(ΔE)of~0.732 V,which is much lower than that of Fe@C-FeNC(~0.831 V)and Cu@C-CuNC(~1.411 V),as well as most of the robust bifunctional electrocatalysts reported to date.Synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory simulations reveal that the strong electronic correlation between metallic Co nanoparticles and the atomic Co-N4 sites in the Co@C-CoNC catalyst can increase the d-electron density near the Fermi level and thus effectively optimize the adsorption/desorption of intermediates in ORR/OER,resulting in an enhanced bifunctional electrocatalytic performance.The Co@C-CoNC-based rechargeable ZAB exhibited a maximum power density of 162.80 mW cm^(−2) at 270.30 mA cm^(−2),higher than the combination of commercial Pt/C+RuO2(~158.90 mW cm^(−2) at 265.80 mA cm^(−2))catalysts.During the galvanostatic discharge at 10 mA cm^(−2),the ZAB delivered an almost stable discharge voltage of 1.2 V for~140 h,signifying the virtue of excellent bifunctional ORR/OER electrocatalytic activity.

Solvation number, thermochemical parameter, and viscosity study of sweeteners in aqueous and non-aqueous media through ultrasonic measurements

Ultrasonic velocity measurements are used to elucidate various aspects of solvation chemistry,including solute–solute and solute–solvent interactions.Herein,an attempt is made to study a behavior of two sweeteners,D-fructose and D-sorbitol,in aqueous and non-aqueous media was attempted.D-fructose is a simple sugar found in many foods and can be consumed by diabetics and people suffering from hypoglycemia.D-Sorbitol is a sugar substitute used in diet foods,sugar-free chewing gum,mints,cough syrups,mouthwash,toothpaste etc.,D-sorbitol is an excellent humectant and texturizing agent that is also used in other products such as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.The interactions between the solute and solvent molecules are explained in terms of the solvation numbers of both aqueous and non-aqueous solutions of D-fructose and D-sorbitol.The viscosity study correlates the viscosity of the solution with solvation;here,density,ultrasonic velocity,and viscosity of aqueous and non-aqueous solutions at various concentrations are measured at different temperatures ranging from 35 to 55℃.These parameters provide sufficient information on the interaction between molecules that may aid chemists in analyzing the mechanisms of the behavior of D-fructose and D-sorbitol in water and the water–ethanol medium through which they are consumed.The Fourier transforms infrared spectra of pure solvent,salt,and their solutions were recorded and analyzed for confirmation.

Silver nanoparticles tolerant bacteria from sewage environment

Silver nanoparticle （SNP） is a threat to soil, water and human health. Protection of environment from silver nanoparticles is a major concern. A sewage isolate, Bacillus pumilus treated with SNPs showed similar growth kinetics to that without nanoparticles. A reduction in the amount of exopolysaccharides was observed after SNPs - B. pumilus culture supernatant interaction. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FT-IR） peaks for the exopolysaccharides extracted from the bacterial culture supernatant and＇the interacted SNPs were almost similar. The exopolysaccharide capping of the SNPs was confirmed by UV-Visible, FT-IR and X-ray diffraction analysis. The study of bacterial exopolysaccharides capped SNPs with E. coli, S. aureus and M. luteus showed less toxicity compared to uncoated SNPs. Our studies suggested that the capping of nanopartieles by bacterially produced exopolysaccharides serve as the probable mechanism of tolerance.

INPHOVIS:Interactive visual analytics for smartphone-based digital phenotyping

Digital phenotyping is the characterization of human behavior patterns based on data from digital devices such as smartphones in order to gain insights into the users’state and especially to identify ailments.To support supervised machine learning,digital phenotyping requires gathering data from study participants’smartphones as they live their lives.Periodically,participants are then asked to provide ground truth labels about their health status.Analyzing such complex data is challenging due to limited contextual information and imperfect health/wellness labels.We propose INteractive PHOne-o-typing VISualization(INPHOVIS),an interactive visual framework for exploratory analysis of smartphone health data to study phone-o-types.Prior visualization work has focused on mobile health data with clear semantics such as steps or heart rate data collected using dedicated health devices and wearables such as smartwatches.However,unlike smartphones which are owned by over 85 percent of the US population,wearable devices are less prevalent thus reducing the number of people from whom such data can be collected.In contrast,the‘‘low-level"sensor data(e.g.,accelerometer or GPS data)supported by INPHOVIS can be easily collected using smartphones.Data visualizations are designed to provide the essential contextualization of such data and thus help analysts discover complex relationships between observed sensor values and health-predictive phone-o-types.To guide the design of INPHOVIS,we performed a hierarchical task analysis of phone-o-typing requirements with health domain experts.We then designed and implemented multiple innovative visualizations integral to INPHOVIS including stacked bar charts to show diurnal behavioral patterns,calendar views to visualize day-level data along with bar charts,and correlation views to visualize important wellness predictive data.We demonstrate the usefulness of INPHOVIS with walk-throughs of use cases.We also evaluated INPHOVIS with expert feedback and received encouraging responses.
