A novel electrospinning method for self-assembled tree-like fibrous scaffolds:Microenvironment-associated regulation of MSC behavior and bone regeneration

Numerous studies highlight advantages of electrospun scaffolds in bone tissue engineering,in which cellular behavior is tightly affected by fiber topographical cues of ***,the classic electrospinning setup limits a desired presentation of biomimetic fibrous microenvironments that sense mechanosignaling and regulate stem cell *** aims of this study were to fabricate advanced asspun scaffolds presenting tree-like microfiber/nanonet networks and to evaluate their regulatory potentials on behavior of human mesenchymal stem cells(h MSCs)and bone *** we developed a novel electrospinning setup that allowed the presentation of patterned Trunk microfibers(TMF)and/or branched nanonet fibers(BNn Fs)in biomimetic fibrous *** the cellular mechanisms,anisotropichierarchical topography of TMF controlled behavior of h MSCs through focal adhesion formation and Yesassociated protein(YAP)induction,whereas BNn F disturbed such mechanosensing responses in the *** fiber microenvironment-related expression and nuclear localization of YAP *** correlated with the potentials of as-spun scaffolds to enhance osteogenic differentiation of the h MSCs and alveolar bone defect healing in an animal ***,this study provides an advanced approach of the modified electrospinning setup for presentation of biomimetic fibrillar microenvironments in as-spun scaffolds along with their application in stem cell behavior regulation and regenerative tissue engineering.

Machine learning of metal-ceramic wettability

The adhesion and wetting between metal and ceramic is a basic problem in materials science and *** example,past materials selection for metal-ceramic composites has relied on random trials and heuristics due to a limited understanding of their adhesion;the large chemical/structural variability that such interfaces can have hinders the identification of the governing *** based on literature data,we have developed a database with~1,000 experimentally measured wetting angles at different temperatures and atmospheric conditions,and come up with a model for the wettability of ionocovalent ceramics(ICs)by metals using a machine learning(ML)*** random forest model uses the testing temperature and~40 features generated based on the chemical compositions of the metal and the ceramic as predictors and exhibits strong predictive power with an R^(2) of~***,this model and the featurization code are integrated into a single computational pipeline to enable(1)predicting metal-IC wettability of interest and(2)high-throughput searching of ICs with the desired wettability by certain metals in the entire Inorganic Crystallographic Structure *** a demonstration of this pipeline,the wettability of a Li-ion and electron insulator(LEI),CaO,by molten Li is estimated and compared with ab initio molecular dynamics simulation *** ML pipeline can serve as a practical tool for methodical design of materials in systems where certain metalceramic wettability is desired.

Effects of compressive stress on the nonlinear electromechanical behavior of ferroelectric ceramics

The effects of compressive stress parallel and perpendicular to the polar axis of PZT ceramics on the nonlinear electromechanical behavior of the materials has been experimentally studied. A domain-switching model that divides each 180° switching to two successive 90° switching is proposed to explain these effects. In the case of stress parallel to the polar axis, domain switching in the ceramics is approximately axisymmetric and can be simulated by an analytical model. While in the case of stress perpendicular to the polar axis, domain switching is three-dimensional and cannot be simplified. The simulated re-sults that match the experiments well show the validity of the proposed domain-switching model.

Pebbling numbers of some graphs

Chung defined a pebbling move on a graphG as the removal of two pebbles from one vertex and the addition of one pebble to an adjacent vertex. The pebbling number of a connected graphG, f(G), is the leastn such that any distribution ofn pebbles onG allows one pebble to be moved to any specified but arbitrary vertex by a sequence of pebbling moves. Graham conjectured that for any connected graphsG andH, f(G xH) ≤ f(G)f(H). In the present paper the pebbling numbers of the product of two fan graphs and the product of two wheel graphs are computed. As a corollary, Graham’s conjecture holds whenG andH are fan graphs or wheel graphs.

The extract of Celtis choseniana Nakai alleviates testosterone-in-duced benign prostatic hyperplasia through inhibiting 5αreductase type 2 and the Akt/NF-κB/AR pathway

Benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH)is a chronic male disease characterized by the enlarged *** choseniana Nakai(***)is medicinally used to alleviate pain,gastric disease,and lung *** this study,the effect of *** extract on BPH was investigated using testosterone-induced *** Dawley rats were divided into five groups:control,BPH(testosterone 5 mg·kg^(−1)),Fina(finasteride 2 mg·kg^(−1)),and ***(50 and 100 mg·kg^(−1)).After four weeks of TP treatment with finasteride or ***,prostate weights and DHT levels were *** addition,the prostates were histopathologically examined and measured for protein kinase B(Akt)/nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)/AR signaling,proliferation,apoptosis,and ***-state weight and epithelial thickness were reduced in the *** groups compared with that in the BPH *** extract of *** acted as a 5αreductase inhibitor,reducing DHT levels in the ***,the extract of *** blocked the activation of p-Akt,nuclear NF-κB activation and reduced the expression of AR and PSA compared with ***,the ex-pression of Bax,PARP-1,and p53 increased,while the expression of bcl-2 *** present study demonstrated that ***-ana extract alleviated testosterone-induced BPH by suppressing 5αreductase and Akt/NF-κB activation,reducing AR signaling and in-ducing apoptosis and autophagy in the *** results suggested that *** probably contain potential herbal agents to alleviate BPH.

Portal hypertension causes portosystemic shunting along the gastrointestinal tract,resulting in *** varices and their bleeding is a rare complication,but it can be fatal without appropriate ***,because of its rarity,no established treatment strategy is yet *** the setting of intractable rectal variceal bleeding,a transjugular intravenous portosystemic shunt can be a treatment of choice to enable portal decompression and thus achieve ***,in the case of recurrent rectal variceal bleeding despite successful transjugular intravenous portosystemic shunt,alternative measures to control bleeding are ***,we report on a patient with liver cirrhosis who experienced recurrent rectal variceal bleeding even after successful transjugular intravenous portosystemic shunt and was successfully treated with variceal embolization.

Offshore Structural Control Considering Fluid Structure Interaction

Tuned Mass Damper （TMD） was applied to an offshore structure to control ocean wave-induced vibration, In the analysis of the dynamic response of the offshore structure, fluid-structure interaction is considered and the errors, which occur in the linearization of the interaction, are investigated. For the investigation of the performance of TMD in controlling the vibration, both regular waves with different periods and irregular waves with different significant wave heights are used. Based on the numerical analysis it is concluded that the fluid-structure interaction should be considered in the evaluation of the capability of TMD in vibration control of offshore structures.

Two-Terminal Lithium-Mediated Artificial Synapses with Enhanced Weight Modulation for Feasible Hardware Neural Networks

Recently,artificial synapses involving an electrochemical reaction of Li-ion have been attributed to have remarkable synaptic ***-terminal synaptic transistors utilizing Li-ion intercalation exhibits reliable synaptic characteristics by exploiting the advantage of nondistributed weight updates owing to stable ion ***,the three-terminal configurations with large and complex structures impede the crossbar array implementation required for hardware neuromorphic ***,achieving adequate synaptic performances through effective Li-ion intercalation in vertical two-terminal synaptic devices for array integration remains ***,two-terminal Au/LixCoO_(2)/Pt artificial synapses are proposed with the potential for practical implementation of hardware neural *** Au/LixCoO_(2)/Pt devices demonstrated extraordinary neuromorphic behaviors based on a progressive dearth of Li in LixCoO_(2)*** intercalation and deintercalation of Li-ion inside the films are precisely controlled over the weight control spike,resulting in improved weight control *** types of synaptic plasticity were imitated and assessed in terms of key factors such as nonlinearity,symmetricity,and dynamic ***,the LixCoO_(2)-based neuromorphic system outperformed three-terminal synaptic transistors in simulations of convolutional neural networks and multilayer perceptrons due to the high linearity and low programming *** impressive performances suggest the vertical two-terminal Au/LixCoO_(2)/Pt artificial synapses as promising candidates for hardware neural networks.

Effect of Radiant Spectral Characteristics on Performance of a Near-Infra-Red Heating Module

We simulated the heat transfer phenomena of the heating module that is primarily based on the radiant energy in the near-infra-red(NIR) *** the module,the power emitted by the lamp filament is distributed to the lamp glass,reflector,and the target medium,which are cooled by an air *** radiant heat transfer is simulated by using the ray-tracing scheme,in which the spectral characteristics of the emission and the materials are *** heat transport from the lamp glass to the cooling air is analyzed by using the finite volume *** the lamp-filament temperature rises in the range of 3000-3400K,the NIR radiant power on the target medium ***,the lamp-glass temperature also rises,and the proportion of the NIR power to the entire radiation has a peak in the temperature *** spectral distributions of the absorbed energies in all the components in the module are highly non-uniform,and a monochromatic model of the radiant heat transfer may result in a significant discrepancy.

Porous Mixed Ionic Electronic Conductor Interlayers for Solid-State Batteries

Rechargeable solid-state batteries(SSBs)have emerged as the next-generation energy storage device based on lowered fire hazard and the potential of realizing advanced battery chemistries,such as alkali metal ***,ceramic solid electrolytes(SEs)generally have limited capability in relieving mechanical stress and are not chemically stable against body-centered cubic alkali metals or their alloys with minor solute elements(β-phase).Swelling-then-retreating ofβ-phase often causes instabilities such as SE fracture and corrosion as well as the loss of electronic/ionic contact,which leads to high charge-transfer resistance,short-circuiting,*** challenges have called for the cooperation from other classes of materials and novel nanocomposite architectures in relieving stress and preserving essential contacts while minimizing detrimental *** this review,we summarize recent progress in addressing these issues by incorporating other classes of materials such as mixed ion-electron conductor(MIEC)porous interlayers and ion-electron insulator(IEI)binders,in addition to SE and metals(e.g.,β-phase and current collectors)that are the traditional SSB *** particular,we focus on providing theoretical interpretations on how open nanoporous MIEC interlayers manipulateβ-phase deposition and stripping behavior and thereby suppress such instabilities,referring to the fundamental thermodynamics and kinetics governing the nucleation and growth of theβ-*** review concludes by describing avenues for the future design of porous MIEC interlayers for SSBs.
