Larval interference competition between the native Neotropical mosquito Limatus durhamii and the invasive Aedes aegypti improves the fitness of both species

Interspecific competition with native species during biological invasions can sometimes limit alien *** aimed to determine the potential ecological effects of Limatus durhamii Theobald 1901,a native Neotropical mosquito (Diptera:culicidae) species,on the invasive species Aedes (Stegomyia)aegypti (Linnaeus 1762)that breeds in the same artificial water *** time and adult dry mass were measured in 3 rearing conditions:control (a single larva),intraspecific competition (2 conspecific larvae),and interspecific competition (2 heterospecific larvae).Food was provided ad libitum to eliminate exploitative *** ***,development time was not affected by interspecific interference competition (nonsignificant differences with the control)and the adult dry mass was significantly higher,meaning that individual fitness likely ***,because previous studies showed longer development time and lighter adults during competition with other invasive mosquitoes,it is likely that *** can express a different phenotype depending on the competing *** similar pattern found for *** females and the nonsignificant difference with the control for males explain in part why this species can compete with ***.

During the interval 06:14―07:30 UT on August 24, 2005, since the Earth’s magneto- pause was suddenly compressed by the persistent high-speed solar wind stream with the southward component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), the magnetopause moved inward for about 3.1 RE. Meanwhile, Tc-1 satellite shifted from northern plasma sheet to the northern lobe/mantle region, although it kept inward flying during the interval 06:00―07:30UT. The shift of Tc-1 from the plasma sheet to the lobe/mantle is caused by the simultaneous inward displacements of the plasma sheet and near-Earth lobe/mantle region, and their inward movement velocity is larger than the inward motion velocity of Tc-1. The joint inward dis-placements of the magnetopause, the lobe/mantle region and the plasma sheet indicate that the whole magnetosphere shrinks inward due to the magnetospheric compression by the high-speed solar wind stream, and the magnetospheric ions are attached to the magnetic field lines (i.e. ‘frozen’ in magnetic field) and move inward in the shrinking process of magnetosphere. The large shrinkage of magne-tosphere indicates that the near-Earth magnetotail compression caused by the strong solar wind dynamic pressure is much larger than its thickening caused by the southward component of the IMF, and the locations of magnetospheric regions with different plasmas vary remarkably with the variation of the solar wind dynamic pressure.

The present study investigates the influence of South china Sea （ScS） SST and ENSO on winter （January-February-March; JFM） rainfall over South china and its dynamic processes by using station observations for the period 1951-2003, Met Office Hadley center SST data for the period 1900-2008, and ERA-40 reanalysis data for the period 1958-2002. It is found that JFM rainfall over South china has a sig- nificant correlation with Nio-3 and ScS SST. Analyses show that in El Nio or positive ScS SST anomaly years, southwesterly anomalies at 700 hPa dominate over the South china Sea, which in turn transports more moisture into South china and favors increased rainfall. A partial regression analysis indicates that the independent ENSO influence on winter rainfall occurs mainly over South china, whereas ScS SST has a larger independent influence on winter rainfall in northern part of South china. The temperature over South china shows an obvious decrease at 300 hPa and an increase near the surface, with the former induced by Nio-3 and the latter ScS SST anomalies. This enhances the convective instability and weakens the potential vorticity （PV）, which explains the strengthening of ascending motion and the increase of JFM rainfall over South china.

Purpose: In acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), multidrug resistance is often mediated by AT- Pase Binding cassette (ABc) proteins, which principally involve ABcc1 (multidrug resistance protein 1, MRP1) and ABcB1 (multidrug resistance 1, MDR1). However, direct comparisons between the differential effects of ABcc1 and ABcB1 have been difficult, since identical cell lines with differential expression of these transporters have not been developed. Experimental design: In this study, we developed and compared the biological profiles of Jurkat cell lines that selectively over-expressed ABcc1 and ABcB1. Vincristine (VcR) plays an important role in the treatment of T-lineage ALL (T-ALL), and is often the first drug given to newly-diagnosed patients. Because of its importance in treatment, we provide descalating, sub-lethal doses of VcR to Jurkat cells, and extended our observations to expression profiling of newly diagnosed patients with T-ALL. Results: We found that VcR-resistant cells over-expressed ABcc1 nearly 30-fold. The calcein AM assay confirmed that VcR-resistant cells actively extruded VcR, and that ABcc1-mediated drug resistance conferred a different spectrum of multidrug resistance than other T-ALL induction agents. siRNA experiments that blocked ABcc1 export confirmed that VcR resistance could be reversed in vitro. Analyses of T-lymphoblasts obtained from 100 newly diagnosed T-ALL patients treated on children’s Oncology Group Phase III studies 9404 and AALL0434 that induction failure could be could be partially explained by the over-expression of ABcc1 and ABcB1. conclusions: Taken together, these results suggest that over-expression of ABc transporters plays a contributing role in mediating treatment failure in T-ALL, and underscore the need to employ alternate treatment approaches in patients for whom induction failed or for those with relapsed disease.

Geogenic lead (Pb) is considered to be less bioavailable than anthropogenic Pb and exerts less effect on the soil fauna. However,Pb contamination in vegetables has been reported in the case of geogenic anomalies, even at moderate concentrations (around 170 mgkg^(-1)). In this study, we investigated collembolan communities using both taxonomic- and trait-based approaches and observed fungal communities to assess the effects of a moderate geogenic Pb anomaly on collembolans and fungi in an urban vegetable garden *** indicated that geogenic Pb indeed modified fungi communities and altered the functional structure of collembolan communities in garden soils. Although geogenic Pb presented low bioavailability, it affected soil fauna and vegetables similar to anthropogenic Pb.

Functionalization of Single- and Multi-Walled carbon Nanotubes with cationic Amphiphiles for Plasmid DNA complexation and Transfection

The possibility of delivering DNA effi ciently to cells represents a crucial issue for the treatment of both genetic and acquired ***,even although the effi ciency of non-viral transfection systems has improved in the last decade,none have yet proven to be suffi ciently effective in *** report herein our results on the functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNT)and multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWNT)by two cationic amphiphiles(lipid RPR120535 and pyrenyl polyamine),their use for the complexation of plasmid DNA,and their efficiency in transfecting cells in *** experiments have shown that the efficiency of transfection is higher when using SWNT instead of MWNT,and that transfection effi ciency is similar or slightly higher when using nanoplexes(SWNT/lipid RPR120535/DNA)instead of lipoplexes(lipid RPR120535/DNA)and several orders of magnitude higher than that of naked *** study therefore shows both that the transfection is better when using SWNTs and that it is dependent on the nature of the amphiphilic molecules adsorbed on the nanotubes.

The equilibrium temperature and pressure of both spinel and garnet peridotite xenolithsfrom eastern china have been estimated by using different geothermobarometers that are currentlyconsidered to be *** on these data,the upper mantle geotherm for eastern china has *** obtained geotherm is higher than that for old craton regions,but is similar to that for *** most prominent feature of the geotherm is that there is a slight gradient at about 60 kmdepth,and the inflection of the geotherm just passes through the transition line between spinel and *** is likely that the inflection represents the botmdary between the lithosphere and *** of the upper mantle beneath eastern china have also been discussed by combining the results ofpetrologic,rheological and dynamical studies of the upper mantle.

Background: The main objective of this study was to examine the climatic sensitivity of the radial growth response of 13 eastern white pine(Pinus strobus L.) provenances planted at seven test sites throughout the northern part of the species’ native distribution in eastern North ***: The test sites(i.e., Wabeno, Wisconsin, USA; Manistique, Michigan, USA; Pine River, Michigan, USA; Newaygo,Michigan, USA; Turkey Point, Ontario, canada; Ganaraska, Ontario, canada; and Orono, Maine, USA) examined in this study were part of a range-wide white pine provenance trial established in the early 1960 s in the eastern United States and canada. Principal components analysis(PcA) was used to examine the main modes of variation [first(Pc1) and second(Pc2) principal component axes] in the standardized radial growth indices of the provenances at each test *** year scores for Pc1 and Pc2 were examined in relation to an array of test site climate variables using multiple regression analysis to examine the commonality of growth response across all provenances to the climate of each test site. Provenance loadings on Pc1 and Pc2 were correlated with geographic parameters(i.e., latitude, longitude,elevation) and a suite of biophysical parameters associated with provenance origin ***: The amount of variation in radial growth explained by Pc1 and Pc2 ranged from 43.4% to 89.6%. Dendroclimatic models revealed that white pine radial growth responses to climate were complex and differed among sites. The key dendroclimatic relationships observed included sensitivity to high temperature in winter and summer, cold temperature in the spring and fal(i.e., beginning and end of the growing season), summer moisture stress, potential sensitivity to storminduced damage in spring and fal, and both positive and negative effects of higher winter snowfal. Lidar Measurements of Aerosols in the Tropical Atmosphere

Measurements of atmospheric aerosols and trace gases using the laser radar (lidar) techniques, have been in progress since 1985 at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune (18°32'N, 73°51'E, 559 m AMSL), India. These observations carried out during nighttime in the lower atmosphere (up to 5.5 km AGL), employing an Argon ion / Helium-Neon lidar provided information on the nature, size, concentration and other characteristics of the constituents present in the tropical atmosphere. The time-height variations in aerosol concentration and associated layer structure exhibit marked differences between the post-sunset and pre-sunrise periods besides their seasonal variation with maximum concentration during pre-monsoon / winter and minimum concentration during monsoon months. These observations also revealed the influence of the terrain of the experimental site and some selected meteorological parameters on the aerosol vertical distributions. The special observations of aerosol vertical profiles obtained in the nighttime atmospheric boundary layer during October 1986 through September 1989 showed that the most probable occurrence of mixing depth lies between 450 and 550 m, and the multiple stably stratified aerosol layers present above the mixing depth with maximum frequency of occurrence at around 750 m. This information on nighttime mixing depth / stable layer derived from lidar aerosol observations showed good agreement with the height of the ground-based shear layer / elevated layer observed by the simultaneously operated sodar at the lidar site.
