Water is one of the essential life’s basic needs. However, the purity and quality of water from groundwater sources in developing countries are still in doubt due to contamination by different anthropogenic activities. This study assessed the temporal variations in physico-chemical parameters of water sources in Kibujjo Village, Wakiso District, Uganda. Water samples were collected from four water sources: two (2) wells and two (2) boreholes. The levels of both physical and chemical parameters were assessed using APHA standard analytical methods. The results indicated that most of the measured water quality variables did not exceed the UNBS and WHO standards for drinking water, and the majority of the water parameters positively correlated. Borehole waters had a better quality than well waters. The highest levels of most of the variables were recorded during the wet season. There was a significant statistical difference (p SO2-4 showed a significant difference in the dry season amongst the water sources but no significant difference during the wet season (p > 0.05). Therefore, water from wells is not recommended for drinking before treatment, most especially during the wet season.

A novel coronavirus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)has spread across the world,prompting the World Health Organization to declare the coronavirus disease of 2019(COVID-19)a public health emergency of international concern.Cancer patients are regarded as a highly vulnerable population to SARS-CoV-2 infection and development of more severe COVID-19 symptoms,which is possibly due to the systemic immunosuppressive state caused directly by tumor growth and indirectly by effects of anticancer treatment.Currently,much effort has been directed toward studying the pathogenesis and treatment of COVID-19,but the risk profiles,prognoses,and treatment outcomes in cancer patients remain unclear.Based on the current literature,we summarize the risk profiles,clinical and biochemical characteristics,and therapy outcomes of COVID-19 infections in cancer patients.The challenges in the clinical care of cancer patients with COVID-19 are discussed.The goal of this review is to stimulate research to better understand the biological impact and prognoses of COVID-19 infections in cancer patients,thus facilitating improvement of the clinical management of these patients.

Dear Editor,Since the initial reports of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection early this year,coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)has rapidly reached pandemic levels with high transmissibility and low but significant mortality.While individuals with a number of underlying comorbidities are more likely to develop severe disease,male sex has emerged as an independent risk factor for poor prognosis,an observation that cannot be accounted for by age or social behaviors including smoking.

Medical laboratory workers handle clinical specimens,which are a threat of exposure to infectious agents.Notably,medical laboratory science students report for internships with only theoretical knowledge of biosafety and biorisk management practices,predisposing them to a higher risk of laboratory hazards.In this study,we assessed the influence of entry-level students'adherence to practices and attitudes towards biosafety and biorisk management during the Internship.An online survey tool was used to explore the practices and attitudes towards laboratory biosafety and risk management.Of the 96 students,60(62.5%)anonymous responses were received,and of these,60.3%were direct entrants,and 32.8%were diploma entrants.Most(91.7%)of the students attended hospital internships,with 60.2%in Biosafety Level(BSL)-2 laboratories and 70.2%rotating in all the core areas of laboratory medicine.The 8.3%who did not attend any internship were under the direct entry category.Exposure to biohazards was not significantly associated with laboratory safety level and student entry category(P>0.05).Recommended laboratory biosafety practices were not significantly associated with the safety level of the laboratory and student entry category(P>0.05).Poor attitudes towards certain laboratory biosafety practices were not significantly associated with the biosafety level of the training laboratory(P>0.05),whereas training(P=0.021)and clean-up procedures(P=0.048)were associated with laboratory safety levels,respectively.The direct entrants had no access to BSL-3 laboratories,and this category of students had a negative attitude towards internship attendance.Therefore,there is a need to create a multi-channel full range laboratory biosafety and biorisk management teaching reforms based on practical application,real case studies,and laboratory simulation to be incorporated into the curriculum to benefit the direct entrant.

The codling moth, Cydia pomonella, is one of the most important pests of pome fruits in the world, yet the molecular genetics and the physiology of this insect remain poorly understood. A combined assembly of 8？341 expressed sequence tags was generated from Roche 454 GS-FLX sequencing of eight tissue-specific cDNA libraries. Putative chemosensory proteins （12） and odorant binding proteins （OBPs）（18） were annotated, which included three putative general OBP （GOBP）, one more than typically reported for other Lepidoptera. To further characterize CpomGOBPs, we cloned cDNA copies of their transcripts and determined their expression patterns in various tissues. Cloning and sequencing of the 698？nt transcript for CpomGOBP1 resulted in the prediction of a 163 amino acid coding region, and subsequent RT-PCR indicated that the transcripts were mainly expressed in antennae and mouthparts. The 1？289 nt （160 amino acid） CpomGOBP2 and the novel 702 nt （169 amino acid） CpomGOBP3 transcripts are mainly expressed in antennae, mouthparts, and female abdomen tips. These results indicate that next generation sequencing is useful for the identification of novel transcripts of interest, and that codling moth expresses a transcript encoding for a new member of the GOBP subfamily.

Background: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. IHD was thought to be an extremely rare occurrence in Sub-Saharan Africa, but the increasing economic development with changes in lifestyle has led to an increase in IHD risk factors which has motivated the interest of our study. Objectives: The aim was to study a group of patients with suspicion of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), in order to determine those with and without electrocardiographic diagnosis of ACS. Methods: It was an observational cross-sectional descriptive study over a period of six months, which included concerned patients who presented with retrosternal or precordial chest pain of onset being less than two weeks with at least one cardiovascular risk factor, in the cardiology units of three reference hospitals in Yaounde. Ethical clearance and authorizations were obtained from the competent authorities. We used a preformed questionnaire to obtain information from the patients concerning the demographic data, clinical presentation and electrocardiographic findings. Results: We recruited 100 patients with suspicion of ACS. 56 patients presented with electrocardiographic diagnosis of ACS and 44 patients did not. The mean age was 60.6 ± 11.5 years with age limits of 32 - 85 years in patients with ACS and 55.3 ± 16.6 years with age limits of 19 - 90 years in patients without ACS. The predominant age group was 60 - 69 years in both groups. The sex ratio (male/female) was 0.6 in patients with ACS and 0.7 in patients without ACS. The main complaints presented in both groups were;chest pain, fatigue, dyspnea and palpitation. The frequent cardiovascular risk factors in both groups were hypertension, age and overweight/obesity. In patients with ACS, 55.4% presented with ST-segment elevated acute coronary syndrome (STE-ACS) and 44.6% presented with non-ST-segment elevated acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS). A human being is a complex type of creature whose existence depends on three components;the spirit, the soul and the body which interact in a reversible manner. I do believe that there comes a time when there is lack of a reversible interaction between the soul and the spirit in certain individuals which leads to a state of mental offset. For humans to live in sociality the world is governed by humans’ laws but the mentally offset human do not live according to these laws. Due to this, they are considered as being useless in the society but I do believe that they have complete natural human rights and are not useless for they are aware of each act they perform. It is observed that the mentally offset human hardly acquire a disease from natural origin, I do believe that due to this lack of a reversible interaction between the soul and the spirit, the immune system is reprogrammed such that there is a lack of recognition of exogenous and endogenous pathological substances and there is no means of interaction between these substances and the body cells.

The brain produces an electromagnetic wave throughout the day and the strength of this wave depends on the activity of the brain. It is said that this wave is a weak wave which does not cover a greater distance. But I do believe that it is like the radio wave in the distance it covers and frequency it possesses. I do believe that there is a communication between individuals through electromagnetic wave (brain wave) and a gas (Nitric Oxide) produced by the brain. This can be observed in our daily experiences. This can also help us understand that as a computer can receive and record the brain waves, so an individual can also receive and integrate these waves and it is being decoded to release the message it contains. In this respect, it can be said that the state of consciousness in an individual can be understood by another through concentration.
