Impact statement Methane-producing microorganisms accelerate the corrosion of iron-containing *** studies have inferred that some methanogens might directly accept electrons from Fe(0),but when this possibility was more intensively investigated,H2 was shown to be an intermediary electron carrier between Fe(0)and ***,we report that Methanosarcina acetivorans catalyzes direct metal-to-microbe electron transfer to support methane *** of the gene for the multiheme,outer-surface c-type cytochrome MmcA eliminated methane production from Fe(0),consistent with the key role of MmcA in other forms of extracellular electron *** findings,coupled with the previous demonstration that outer-surface c-type cytochromes are also electrical contacts for electron uptake from Fe(0)by Geobacter and Shewanella species,suggest that the presence of multiheme c-type cytochromes on corrosion surfaces might be diagnostic for direct metal-to-microbe electron transfer and that interfering with cytochrome function might be a strategy to mitigate corrosion.

Thrombospondin peptide ABT-898 inhibits inflammation and angiogenesis in a colitis model

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of the improvedthrombospondin mimetic peptide ABT-898 in a murine model of ulcerative colitis. METHODS: The dextran sodium sulfate(DSS) was used for the induction of colitis in both TSP-1 deficient(TSP-1-/-) and wild type(WT) mice during 7 d. While mice were receiving the DSS dissolved in the drinking water, the ABT-898 peptide was dissolved in sterile 5% glucose solution and delivered using mini pumps subcutaneously implanted. Plasma samples were analyzed for interleukin(IL)-6 by ELISA assay and colonic tissues were harvested, fixed and processed for histological evaluation. Immunohistochemistry using antibodies for the detection of CD31 and MECA in endothelial cells was performed. Inflammation was graded in colonic sections and the number of microvessels in each lesion was assessed. Activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(STAT3) in colonic samples was quantified by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting using antibodies against total STAT3 and phosphorylated STAT3(p STAT3)(Ser727).rESULTS: Treatment with ABT-898 considerably diminished the inflammatory response in WT and TSP-1-/- mice(P roups vs control). Identification of blood vessels highlighted by CD31/MECA immunohistochemistry, showed significantly reduced vessel counts in colitic lesions of WT and TSP-1-/- mice treated with ABT898(TSP-1-/- controls/TSP-1-/- treated, P = 0.0002; WT controls/WT treated, P = 0.0005). Consistently, IL-6 was significantly diminished in plasma samples of TSP-1-/- and WT treated with the peptide when compared to the control mice(P = 0.0002 and P = 0.0148, respectively). p STAT3 positive cells were quantified in WT and TSP-1-/- treated with ABT-898. A significant decrease in positive cells for p STAT3 was observed in treated mice(TSP-1-/- controls/TSP-1-/- treated, P = 0.0089; WT/WT treated, P = 0.0110). Whereas a rich literature exists for estimating population genetic divergence, metrics of phenotypic trait divergence are lacking, particularly for comparing multiple traits among three or more populations. Here, we review and analyze via simula- tion Hedges＇ g, a widely used parametric estimate of effect size. Our analyses indicate that g is sensitive to a combination of unequal trait variances and unequal sample sizes among populations and to changes in the scale of measurement. We then go on to derive and explain a new, non-parametric distance measure, ＇Aft＇, which is caiculated based upon a joint cumulative distribution function （CDF） from all populations under study. More precisely, distances are measured in terms of the percentiles in this CDF at which each population＇s median lies. Ap combines many desirable features of other distance metrics into a single metric; namely, compared to other metrics, p is relatively insensitive to unequal variances and sample sizes among the populations sam- pied. Furthermore, a key feature of Ap--and our main motivation for developing it--is that it easily accommodates simultaneous comparisons of any number of traits across any number of populations. To exemplify its utility, we employ Ap to address a ques- tion related to the role of sexual selection in speciation： are sexual signals more divergent than ecological traits in closely related taxa？ Using traits of known function in closely related populations, we show that traits predictive of reproductive performance are indeed, more divergent and more sexually dimorphic than traits related to ecological adaptation [Current Zoology 58 （3）： 426-439 2012].

Leadless Cardiac Pacemaker: Does Anatomical Position at Implant Affect Long-Term Electrical Performance?

Background: The Nanostim {trade mark, serif} Leadless Cardiac Pacemaker (LCP) has been shown to be safe and effective in human clinical trials. Since there is little information on the effect of implant location on LCP performance, the aim of this study was to determine whether anatomic position affects the long-term pacing performance of the LCP. Methods: Patients who enrolled in the Leadless II IDE Clinical Trial and had finished 6 months follow up (n = 479) were selected for the study. The implanting investigators determined the LCP final position under fluoroscope, which was categorized into three groups: rV apex (rVA, n = 174), rV apical septum (rVAS, n = 101), and rV septum (rVS, n = 204) (Figure 1). Data on capture threshold (at a 0.4 ms pulse width), r-wave amplitude and impedance were analyzed at implant, hospital discharge and 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months post-implant. results: At implant, the mean capture thresholds in the rVA, rVAS and rVS were 0.77 ± 0.45, 0.81 ± 0.61 and 0.78 ± 0.59 volts, respectively. r-wave amplitudes were 8.0 ± 3.0 mV, 7.7 ± 2.9 mV and 7.6 ± 2.9 mV, respectively. Impedance values were 727 ± 311, 765 ± 333, and 677 ± 227 respectively. There were no differences among the 3 implant locations in capture threshold or r-wave amplitudes at 6 months (P > 0.06);however, all 3 performance parameters significantly improved over time (P re thresholds or r-wave amplitudes at 6 months, and there is little effect on impedance. Although implant location does not appear to be a predictor of electrical performance, additional long-term data will help guide optimal implant location.

The historical annual loading to,removal from,and cumulative burden in the Arctic Ocean for β-hexachlorocyclohexane(β-HCH),an isomer comprising 5e12%of technical HCH,is investigated using a mass balance box model from 1945 to *** the 76 years,loading occurred predominantly through ocean currents and river inflow(83%)and only a small portion via atmospheric transport(16%).β-HCH started to accumulate in the Arctic Ocean in the late 1940s,reached a peak of 810 t in 1986,and decreased to 87 t in 2020,when its concentrations in the Arctic water and air were~30 ng m^(-3)and~0.02 pg m^(-3),*** though β-HCH and α-HCH(60e70%of technical HCH)are both the isomers of HCHs with almost identical temporal and spatial emission patterns,these two chemicals have shown different major pathways entering the *** from α-HCH with the long-range atmospheric transport(LrAT)as its major transport pathway,β-HCH reached the Arctic mainly through long-range oceanic transport(LrOT).The much higher tendency of β-HCH to partition into the water,mainly due to its much lower Henry's Law Constant than α-HCH,produced an exceptionally strong pathway divergence with β-HCH favoring slow transport in water and α-HCH favoring rapid transport in *** concentration and burden of β-HCH in the Arctic Ocean are also predicted for the year 2050 when only 4.4-5.3 t will remain in the Arctic Ocean under the influence of climate change.

BACKGrOUND Early diagnosis is key to prevent bowel damage in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).risk factor analyses linked with delayed diagnosis in European IBD patients are scarce and no data in German IBD patients *** To identify risk factors leading to prolonged diagnostic time in a German IBD *** Between 2012 and 2022,430 IBD patients from four Berlin hospitals were enrolled in a prospective study and asked to complete a 16-item questionnaire to determine features of the path leading to IBD *** diagnostic time was defined as the time from symptom onset to consulting a physician(patient waiting time)and from first consultation to IBD diagnosis(physician diagnostic time).Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify risk factors for each time *** The total diagnostic time was significantly longer in Crohn’s disease(CD)compared to ulcerative colitis(UC)patients(12.0 vs 4.0 mo;Preased physician diagnostic time(5.5 vs 1.0 mo;Priate analysis,the predominant symptoms diarrhea(P=0.012)and skin lesions(P=0.028)as well as performed gastroscopy(P=0.042)were associated with longer physician diagnostic time in CD *** UC,fever was correlated(P=0.020)with shorter physician diagnostic time,while fatigue(P=0.011)and positive family history(P=0.046)were correlated with longer physician diagnostic *** We demonstrated that CD patients compared to UC are at risk of long diagnostic *** efforts should focus on shortening the diagnostic delay for a better outcome in these patients.

The fault is potentially vulnerability's geological structure in the working face and its vicinity,and it is also a crucial geological factor affecting coal mine safety *** investigate the unstable failure of surrounding rock induced by fault activation under the influence of adoption,which was studied utilizing field case and numerical analysis for the deformation and failure process of surrounding rock near the fault-affected *** with field cases,this paper analyzes disturbance stress and roof abscission layer monitoring in effecting zones of fault *** the discrete element 3DEC numerical analysis method,the model of surrounding rock unstable fracture induced by fault activation under adoption is *** unstable fracture and stress variation characteristics of surrounding rock induced by fault activation during the excavation of the upper side wall and lower side wall of the faults are simulated and *** analysis shows that as the coal working face continues to advance,the mining stress gradually *** is a zigzag wave on the relationship curve between coal mining and roof displacement near the fault,which reveals that the surrounding rock of the fault activation affected zone is in the superposition state of static load and dynamic ***,the simulation results show that the stress and displacement of surrounding rock near the fault increase with the advance of coal mining *** closer to the fault plane,the displacement gradually returns to zero,and the stress is also in a lower state.
