BACKGROUND:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a highly malignant tumor with a poor *** small HCCs possess most of the characteristics of early HCC,we investigated small HCCs to screen potential biomarkers for early ***:Proteins were extracted from 10 sets of paired tissue samples from HBV-infected small-HCC *** extracted proteins were well resolved by two-dimensional *** HCC-associated proteins were then identified by MALDI-TOF/TOF MS following image *** blotting and immunohistochemistry were used to assess glutamine synthetase(GS)and phenazine biosynthesislike domain-containing protein(PBLD)expression in liver ***-linked immunosorbent assays in 152 serum samples(from 49 healthy donors,24 patients with liver cirrhosis,and 79 with HCC)were used to further assess the significance of GS ***:Fifteen up-regulated and three down-regulated proteins were *** blotting confirmed GS overexpression and decreased PBLD expression in liver *** showed that GS was expressed in 70.0%(84/120)of HCCs and 35.8%(43/120)of nontumor tissues;PBLD was expressed in 74.2%(89/120) of nontumor tissues and 40.8%(49/120)of *** Chi-square test showed significant expression differences between HCCs and adjacent *** with this,serum GS levels in HCC patients were significantly higher than those in liver cirrhosis patients and healthy donors,while the latter two groups were also significantly *** addition, a diagnostic cutoff value of 2.6 mg/ml was used for GS;it was elevated in 19(76.0%)of 25 HCC patients with AFP≤20 ng/ml and 47(88.7%)of 53 HCC patients with AFP≤200 ng/***:GS and PBLD are abnormally expressed in most *** may be a novel serum marker for early HCC, especially for those patients with low AFP levels(≤200 ng/ml).

The amniotic membrane (AM) in humans is the innermost fetal membrane and is composed of amnion mesenchymal cells (hAMCs) and amnion epithelial cells (hAECs). The former are derived from the extra-embryonic mesoderm of the primitive streak, and the latter from the fetal ectoderm. Numerous studies have shown that both hAMCs and hAECs display stem cell characteristics. In this review, we examine the progress made in understanding the characteristics of hAMCs, including information on the structure and function of AM and hAMCs, their immunological features, and the pluripotency of hAMCs.

Combined electro-acupuncture with liver artery intubation in treatment of massive liver cancer

Objective: To investigate the clinical effectiveness of electro-acupuncture therapy (EAT) in combination with liver artery intubation chemotherapy for mas- sive liver cancer. Methods: A total of 106 patients were divided into 3 groups. In group A, patients underwent EAT in combination with invasive therapy. In group B, pa- tients received EAT alone, in group C, patients un- derwent liver artery intubation chemotherapy. In group A and B, subcostal oblique incision was per- formed to expose liver cancer, and electrodes were inserted into the tumor under direct vision. In group A, liver artery intubation was performed during ope- ration, followed by chemotherapy through the tube. Liver artery intubation chemotherapy was performed only in group C. Results: The effective rate was 73.7% (28/38), 55.6% (20/36) and 28.1% (9/32) in group A, B and C, respectively. Conclusions: Electro-acupuncture therapy in combi- nation with liver artery intubation chemotherapy a- chieves best results, It is an effective therapy for massive liver cancer.

Early changes of hepatic hemodynamics measured by functional CT perfusion in a rabbit model of liver tumor

BACKGROUND:Early detection and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma is crucial to improving the patients’ *** hemodynamic changes caused by tumors can be serially measured using CT *** this study,we used a CT perfusion technique to demonstrate the changes of hepatic hemodynamics in early tumor growth,as a proof-of-concept study for human early hepatocellular ***:VX2 tumors were implanted in the liver of ten New Zealand *** perfusion scans were made 1 week(early) and 2 weeks(late) after tumor *** normal rabbits served as *** perfusion parameters were obtained at the tumor rim,normal tissue surrounding the tumor,and control liver;the parameters were hepatic blood flow,hepatic blood volume,mean transit time,permeability of capillary vessel surface,hepatic arterial index,hepatic arterial perfusion and hepatic portal *** density and vascular endothelial growth factor were ***:At the tumor rim,compared to the controls,hepatic blood flow,hepatic blood volume,permeability of capillary vessel surface,hepatic arterial index,and hepatic arterial perfusion increased,while mean transit time and hepatic portal perfusion decreased on both early and late scans(P<0.05).Hepatic arterial index increased(135%,P<0.05),combined with a sharp increase in hepatic arterial perfusion(182%,P<0.05) and a marked decrease in hepatic portal perfusion(-76%,P<0.05) at 2 weeks rather than at 1 week(P<0.05).Microvessel density and vascular endothelial growth factor showed significant linear correlations with hepatic blood flow,permeability of capillary vessel surface and hepatic arterial index,but not with hepatic blood volume or mean transit ***:The CT perfusion technique demonstrated early changes of hepatic hemodynamics in this tumor model as proof-of-concept for early hepatocellular carcinoma detection in humans.

How Do Herbal Medicines Tonify the Kidney and Ameliorate the Marrow Microenvironment Work on Hemopoiesis

Herbal Medicines used to tonify Kidney and ameltorate the marrow microenvironmentwere applied in the treatment of 50 patients of aplastic anemia. Stanazol was also used to some ***-one cases (82. 0 % )responded well. It is significantly better than the 56. 5 % response among thosetreated with stanazol alone. Experimentally, the herbal medicines appear to stimulate hemopoietic pro-genitor cell proliferation, improve the marrow microenyironment and repair marrow damage induced bycyclophosphamide in vivo. The hemopoietic promoting effect might be partly due to the desialation of themarrow stroma cells. The herbal medicines also exert a positive effect on immune system by increasingleukocyte phagocytic activity and elevating the interleukin-2 production. Moreover , the decrease of super-oxide dismutase resulting from cyclophosphamide injection could be reversed by the use of the herbalmedicines. In conclusion, to tonify the Kidney and ameliorate marrow microenvironment medicines pro-duce broad biological results that are beneficial to the body.

Changes in EEG measurements in intractable epilepsy patients with neurofeedback training

To assess the effects of neurofeedback on brain electrophysiology and to determine how biofeedback works,power spectral density (PSD) and approximate entropy(ApEn) analyses are applied to the EEGs of six patients with intractable epilepsy who received neurofeedback *** sessions of treatment,the EEG sensorimotor rhythm to theta PSD ratio calculated from the C4 electrode site becomes larger than that before the treatment,which is consistent with the biofeedback *** ApEn over 16-channel EEG recordings all increase to different *** increases occur in channels located near the training position(C4).All these results suggest that these EEG measurements are new criteria that can be used to evaluate the effect of neurofeedback.

Hyperthermia by heating in-stent is a potentially new method to treat esophageal *** study assessed the safety of heating the rabbit esophagus with a nitinol stent in an alternating magnetic field(AMF) and investigated whether this method offers a therapeutic option for esophageal *** stents were placed in the cervical esophagi of healthy rabbits,which were heated in an AMF for different times at 43,46 and 50℃.The esophagi were histologically examined after a week to observe whether there was transmural *** esophageal cancer of rabbit placed nitinol stents were heated in an AMF at 46℃for 10 *** were heated to a target temperature within 5 *** highest tolerated temperature and time for the healthy rabbit esophagus was at 46℃for 10 *** growth was delayed by heating and it was statistically *** the rabbit esophageal wall at 46℃for 10 min proves to be safe and effective in delaying tumor growth.
