The mineral inclusions in zircon from gneisses in ultra-high pressure (UHP) zone of the Dabie Mountains were identified by using a laser Raman microspectrometer. Coesite occurs as inclusions in zircons from all types of gneiss. Other important minerals, such as jadeite, omphacite, aragonite, barite, and anhydrite were also found as inclusion minerals. These discoveries indicate that ( i) gneissic country rocks had metamorphosed at the same time as the enclosed eclogites; and (ii) SO4-2.-bearing fluids were presentin the UHP metamorphic process, which is manifested by occurrence of barite and anhydrite coexisting with coesite.

This paper presents a formal verification method based on logic simulation. In our method, using symbolic values even circuits which include data paths can be verified without abstraction of data paths. Our verifier extracts a transition relation from the state graph (given as a specification) which is expressed using symbolic values, and verifies based on simulation using those symbolic values if the circuit behaves correctly with respect to each transition of the specification. If the verifier terminates with "correct", then we can guarantee that for any applicable input vector sequences, the circuit and the specification behaves identically. We have implemented the proposed method on a Unix workstation and verified some FIFO and LIFO circuits by using it.

An adaptive learning control scheme intended to the on-lineoptimization of sculptured. The scheme uses a back-propagation neuralnetwork to learn the relationships between process inputs and processstates. The cutting parameters of the process model are optimizedthrough a genetic algorithms(GA). The capacity of the proposed schemefor determining optimum process inputs under a variety of processconditions and optimization strategies is evaluated on the basis ofmilling of a sculptured surface using a ball-end mill. Theexperimental results show that the neural network could model thecutting process efficiently, and the cutting conditions such asspindle speed could be regulated for achieving high efficiency andhigh quality. Therefore the proposed approach can be well applied tothe manufacturing of dies and molds.

Using an approximately analytical formation, we extend the steady state model of the pure methane hydrate system to include the salinity based on the dynamic model of the methane hydrate system. The top and bottom boundaries of the methane hydrate stability zone (MHSZ) and the actual methane hy-drate zone (MHZ), and the top of free gas occurrence are determined by using numerical methods and the new steady state model developed in this paper. Numerical results show that the MHZ thickness becomes thinner with increasing the salinity, and the stability is lowered and the base of the MHSZ is shifted toward the seafloor in the presence of salts. As a result, the thickness of actual hydrate occur-rence becomes thinner compared with that of the pure water case. On the other hand, since lower solubility reduces the amount of gas needed to form methane hydrate, the existence of salts in sea-water can actually promote methane gas hydrate formation in the hydrate stability zone. Numerical modeling also demonstrates that for the salt-water case the presence of methane within the field of methane hydrate stability is not sufficient to ensure the occurrence of gas hydrate, which can only form when the methane concentration dissolved in solution with salts exceeds the local methane solubility in salt water and if the methane flux exceeds a critical value corresponding to the rate of diffusive methane transport. In order to maintain gas hydrate or to form methane gas hydrate in marine sedi-ments, a persistent supplied methane probably from biogenic or thermogenic processes, is required to overcome losses due to diffusion and advection.

The source mechanism of underground nuclear explosions is remarkably different from that of earthquakes in both spatial radiation pattern and source time-function (STF). Small underground nuclear explosions can be used as empirical Green’s functions (EGF) to isolate the source-time spectrum of a large suspected earthquake occurred in a Nuclear Test Site (target area) by the spectral division method. As this study shows, with high-quality data, the quotient spectrum can be transformed to the time domain, yielding the apparent far-field source-time function of the large suspected event. The relative source time-function (RSTF) of a nuclear ex-plosion is usually a simple pulse with a duration of about 1 s., while an earthquake’s is more complicated with a series of pulses and a longer duration. The RSTF can be used as a nice dis-criminant to distinguish the nature earthquakes from underground nuclear explosions in target areas.

Collision and amalgamation of continent and microcontinent block were recognized as one of the major processes for building up a continent. The pre Jurassic structure of Northeast China and its adjacent region (including south of Russia Far East, north of North Korea and inner part of southwest japan) is characterized by collision and amalgamation of microcontinent blocks, such as the North China block (NCB), Northeast China block (NECB), Khanka block and Hida *** central Jilin belt and Yanbian Grodekovsk belt that juxtapose and amalgamate these blocks in between in Northeast China and its vicinity were formed by a series of rock assemblages that are typical for Paleozoic active continental margin island arcs. The dominant Permian marine sequences in Yanbian (Yanbian Grodekovsk) belt, which are known for bearing transitional marine fauna, include turbidite olistostrome sediments of a slope facies, and limestones, sandstones as well as siltstones of a neritic littoral facies sediments along with predominant acidic to intermediate volcanic materials. The Maizuru belt in southwest japan is supposed to be the equivalent of Yanbian Grodekovsk belt. The central Jilin belt consists of a well developed sedimentary sequence and volcanics of Paleozoic. The Bamiantong Gudonghe Fuerhe Chongjin suture complex in Northeast China and the equivalent Sangun Akiyoshi belt in southwest japan serve as a major suture zone among these microcontinental blocks and belts.

Experiments were conducted repeatedly on Mannari granite under different temperature and confining pressure conditions. Systematic micro- and submicro-structural and mechanical analyses of granite samples deformed under 1.5 GPa (confining pressure), at 2. ℃-650 ℃ temperatures and at 2.10-6s-1 strain rate show the brittle-ductile deformation microstructures and microstructural associations similar to those observed in naturally deformed crustal rocks and minerals. Brittle fracturing and crystalline plasticity co-exist and react with each other in the brittle-ductile transition domain of the continental lithosphere. The interaction between the different mechanisms in the transitional domain results in the variation of anomalous strength values, which may best explain the genesis of the continental seismogenic zone. A new fault zone model is proposed on the basis of detailed micromechanical and microstructural analyses.
