The treatment of tetrakis (4-pyridyl) porphyrin H2TPyP with a hydrated rare earth (III) acetylacetonate RE(acac)3 · nH2O (RE=Y, Eu, Gd) in 1,2, 4-trichlorobenzene (TCB) pro- duced a monomeric porphyrinato rare earth compound RE (TPyP) acac, which further reacted with dicyanobenzene in amyl alcohol in the presence of 1, 8-diazabicyclo [5. 4. 0] undec-7-ene (DBU), giving HRE(TPyP) (Pc) in a good yield. Upon exposure to air, part of the protonated mixed double-deckers in CHC13 solutions converted slowly to the corresponding neutral complexes RE (TPyP) (Pc). These protonated complexes were characterized by means of UV-V is, IR, NMR, mass spectroscopies. The quaternarization of these protonated mixed double-deckers with methyl iodide produced the salts of tetramethylated cations [HRE(TMPyP) (Pc)]4+.

Inhibition of aluminium corrosion in NaOH solution by anionic surfactant as sodium (lauryl)sulphate, cationic surfactant as cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and non ionic surfactant asTriton-X 100 has been studied using weight-loss and hydrogen evolution methods. It is foundthat the inhibition efficiency depends on the type of SAS as well as its concentration. Two new sterol have been isolated from the South China Sea marine organism. Compound 1 was isolated from the sponge Polymastia sobustia and compound 2 was obtained from the soft coral Sinularia inexplicata. Their structures were established as 3 beta-hydroxy-stigmast-5en-7-one and 24-methylene cholestan -3 beta, 6 beta, 9 alpha, 19-tetrol by variety of spectral analysis such as IR, EIMS, 1DNMR, H-1-H-1 COSY, HMQC, HMBC, NOESY.

Reported here are several new calculation methods for the inner-sphere reorganization energy of hydrated metal ions involved in electron transfer *** is based on the self-exchange model of reorganization and utilizes the more exact potential functions between central metal ion and the inner-sphere *** parameters involved are determined via the spectroscopic and thermodynamic *** predictions of the inner-sphere reorganization energies from those models agree well with the photoemission experimental results.

Examples of the refinement of disordered structures taken from work published in Acta Crystallographica are presented together with explanations on how the disordered structures are dealt with. The constraint and restraint commands in the SHELXL-97 refinement program that are specific to the particular type of disorder are described. Some ways to divine the hydrogen atoms on water are given in detail. The refinements of the Flack parameters and twinned structures are briefly discussed.

This is the first report of using the microwave heating technique to synthesize calcium sulphide activated by europium whose structure is determined as the face-centered cubic by conventional X-ray powder diffraction method. The phosphor has maximum excitation peaks located at 280 urn and 560 urn and the maximum emission of the phosphor is 630 nm. When the concentration of Eu^(2+) in CaS increases from I .0 × 10^(-5) to l.0 × 10^(-2) mole per mole host, the body colour of the calcium sulphide activated with europium changes from white, through light-red to pink to deep-red. The phosphor obtains the longest afterglow at the concentration of 0.1% Eu^(2+)doped and is a kind of good material excited by sunlight.

This article describes recent developments in chemical study on a series of butterfly-shaped μ-CO-containing Fe/E (E = S, Se, Te) cluster salts. These salts include eleven novel cluster anions, which are the single butterfly one μ-CO-containing [(μ-RE)(μ-CO)Fe2(CO)6]- (A), the double butterfly two μ-CO-containing {[(μ-CO)Fe2(CO)6]2(μ-EZE-μ)}2- (B, E = S; C, E = Se), the triple butterfly three μ-CO- containing {[(μ-CO)Fe2(CO)6]3[(μ-SCH2CH2)3N]}3- (D), {[(μ-CO)Fe2(CO)6]3[1,3,5-(μ-SCH2)3C6H3]}3- (E), {[(μ- CO)Fe2(CO)6]3[(μ-SCH2)3CMe]}3- (F), the double butterfly one μ-CO-containing {[(μ-CO)Fe2(CO)6] [Fe2(CO)6][(μ-SCH2)3CMe]} - (G) derived in situ from F, the quadruple butterfly four μ-CO-containing {[(μ- CO)Fe2(CO)6]4[1,2,4,5-(μ-SCH2)4C6H2]}4- (H), the triple butterfly two μ-CO-containing {[(μ-CO)Fe2(CO)6]2 [Fe2(CO)6][1,2,4,5-(μ-SCH2)4C6H2]}2- (I) derived in situ from H, the quadruple butterfly four μ-CO-con- taining {[(μ-CO)Fe2(CO)6]4[(μ-SCH2)4C]}4- (J), and the triple butterfly two μ-CO-containing {[(μ-CO)Fe2 (CO)6]2[Fe2(CO)6][(μ-SCH2)4C]}2- (K) derived in situ from J. This article describes not only the synthetic methods for formation of such anionic cluster (A-K) salts, but also their novel reactions leading to various new types of butterfly Fe/E cluster complexes. All these findings described in this article are important both theoretically and practically.

A potential energy surface for the electronic ground state of carbonyl sulfide was optimized by using a self-consistent configuration-interaction method and involving the recently observed vibrational band origins up to 8000 cm-1. With the optimized potential, the vibrational energy levels of OCS up to 15000 cm-1 were computed using the discrete variable representation method and Lanczos algorithm. Approximately 480 vibrational energy levels were identified. The statistical investigation showed that the vibrational energy levels of OCS up to 15000 cm-1 are largely regular.
