Improved threshold retracker for satellite altimeter waveform retracking over coastal sea

Data quality is a key factor for the application of satellite altimetry to geodesy and oceanography. Accuracy of altimetry is limited in the coastal area because the altimeter waveforms are seriously contaminated by topography and environmental pollution. So waveform retracking is needed to compute the range correction of geophysical data records (GDRs) for better accuracy. In this paper, a new waveform retracker named the improved threshold retracker (ITR) is put forward. The retracker first builds sub-waveforms based on leading edges detected in a waveform, then determines the middle point of each leading edge to compute the retracking range correction, finally calculates the referenced sea surface heights according to the geoid undulation from a local geopotential model and tide heights from an ocean tide model, and compares it with all retracking ranges to determine the best one. As a test, altimeter waveforms of Geosat/GM are retracked around the taiwan coastal area. The result shows that accuracy of ITR method is two times better than that of theβ-5-pa-rameter function-fitting method and threshold method, and three times better than that of GDRs. ITR can efficiently improve the altimetry accuracy of the coastal sea area.

Longshore Current on an Equilibrium Beach

Natural beaches tend to be concave-up rather than planar and are reasonable to be modeled by an equilibrium beach profile. A governing equation for longshore current on an equilibrium beach is derived and its analytical solution is given in this paper. Through comparisons of the present solution and field data of longshore current for a step-type beach, the present solution is found to have fairly agreeable prediction to longshore current inside the surf zone. The effects of the shape of a concave-up beach and turbulent mixing stress on longshore current inside the surf zone are discussed in the present paper.

A Study on the Spectral Form of Nearshore Water Waves

The spectral form of wind waves is investigated based on the ocean wave data observed at three nearshore stations of taiwan. In this study, the generalized forms of Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum and JONSWAP spectrum are used to describe the local wave spectrum by selecting suitable spectral form parameters. It is shown that, at a specific site, the similarity of wave spectral form exists. Thus it is possible to use a representative spectral form for a given nearshore region to describe the wave spectrum at this nearshore. On the other hand, the effects of relative water depth on spectral form are examined. The feasibility of two spectral models in finite water depth is evaluated by using the same field wave data.

This study presents a numerical solution to the three-dimensional solute transport in heterogeneous media by using a layer-integrated *** vertical spatial variation of soil and hydraulic properties within each layer,a threedimensional solute transport can be simplified as a quasi-three-dimensional solute transport which couples a horizontal two-dimensional simulation and a vertical onedimensional *** finite analytic numericalmethod was used to discretize the derived two-dimensional governing equation.A quadratic function was used to approximate the vertical one-dimensional concentration distribution in the layer to ensure the continuity of concentration and flux at the interface between the adjacent *** integration over each layer,a set of system of equations can be generated for a single column of vertical cells and solved numerically to give the vertical solute concentration *** solute concentration field was then obtained by solving all columns of vertical cells to achieve convergence with the iterative solution *** proposed model was verified through examples from the published literatures including four verifications in terms of analytical and experimental *** of simulation results indicates that the proposed model satisfies the solute concentration profiles obtained from experiments in time and space.
