Biobased adsorbents are eco-friendly materials used for water and wastewater treatment and air *** research work explores the potential use of rice husk chars as a low-cost adsorbent for pollutants from water,such as methylene blue and *** husk chars are prepared by combustion of rice husks(RH-Char)or pre-treated rice husks(PT-Char).A third char(m-Char)supplied by a local company which uses rice husks as combustion material is also *** chars are characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEm)in conjunction with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX),X-ray powder diffraction(XRD),and zeta-potential *** three bio-chars are tested as adsorbent for the removal of two wastewater contaminants:methylene blue(mB)and ethinylestradiol(EE2).According to the results,RH-Char and PT-Char present zeta-potential values near−52 mV,whereas m-Char shows a zeta-potential value of−32 *** RH-Char and PTChar are rich in amorphous SiO_(2) and m-Char has crystalline SiO_(2)(cristobalite).The bio-chars remove mB and EE2 efficiently showing the following results for the adsorption capacity of mB(inμmol g^(−1)):769.2(RH-Char),41.2(PT-Char),and 31.7(m-Char).The adsorption capacity values for EE2(inμmol g^(−1))are:33.1(RH-Char),19.1(PT-Char),and 16.9(m-Char).The information gathered in the present work evidences the potential of rice husks bio-chars for bio-remediation and may in future contribute to the conversion of a side-stream from the rice industry into value-added materials.

Seed dispersal by Tana River mangabeys in fragmented gallery forests

Data collected on a free ranging group of Tana River mangabeys (Cercocebus galeritus) indicates that this endangered primate species, which has previously been regarded as a seed predator, plays an important role in seed dispersal and do contribute to the regeneration of a highly fragmented gallery forest. We observed fruit handling behavior and the post-dispersal fate of seeds ingested by the mangabeys. The two main fruit handling behaviors observed, fruit swallowing and processing fruits in cheek pouches, positively contributed to seed disper- sal. Seed predation was not common during this study, apart from a few particular plant species such as Acacia robusta and Alangium salviifolium with non-fleshy fruits. We found a correlation between seed predation and fruit availability, respectively seasonal differential specific dispersal efficiency. The role of the mangabeys in dispersing seeds and facilitating forest regeneration is enhanced by their movement across forest patches through non-forested matrix, which contributes to the deposition of seeds and regeneration in these habitat gaps.

采用熵技术支持下的层次分析模型和多层次多目标模糊综合测度模型求算出河西地区的可持续发展能力 ,进而总结出可持续发展能力的地域分异规律。认为区内各县市可持续发展能力差异较大 ,但其地域分异呈现出某种规律性 :流域上游地区的可持续发展能力高于流域中下游地区 ,呈现出从上游到下游逐步递减的规律 ;工矿区可持续发展能力高于农区 ,呈现出从矿区到农区逐步递减的规律 ;牧区的可持续发展能力高于农区 ,呈现出从牧区到农区逐步递减的规律 ;城区的可持续发展能力高于农区 ,呈现出从城区到农区逐步递减的规律 ;少数民族地区的可持续发展能力高于汉族地区 ,呈现出从少数民族地区到汉族地区逐步递减的规律。这种分异规律可为河西地区新世纪生态环境建设和经济社会可持续发展提供定量化的科学决策依据。

Dilution sampling and analysis of particulate matter in biomass-derived syngas

Thermochemical biomass gasification,followedby conversion of the produced syngas to fuels andelectrical power,is a promising energy *** of particulate matter(Pm)and othercontaminants in the syngas is important to minimizedamage and ensure efficient operation of the engines itpowers and the fuels created from it.A dilution samplingsystem is demonstrated to quantify Pm in syngas generatedfrom two gasification plants utilizing different biomassfeedstocks:a Biomax®15 Biopower System that uses rawand torrefied woodchips as feedstocks,and an integratedbiorefinery(IBR)that uses rice hulls and woodchips ***_(2.5)mass concentrations in syngas from theIBR downstream of the purification system were 12.8-13.7μg·m^(-3),which were significantly lower than themaximum level for catalyst protection(500μg·m^(-3))andwere 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than those inBiomax®15 syngas(2247-4835μg·m^(-3)).Ultrafine particlenumber concentration and Pm_(2.5)chemical constituentswere also much lower in the IBR syngas than in theBiomax®*** dilution sampling system enabledreliable measurements over a wide range of concentrations:the use of high sensitivity instruments allowed measurementat very low concentrations(~1μg·m^(-3)),while theflexibility of dilution minimized sampling problems thatare commonly encountered due to high levels of tars in rawsyngas(~1 g·m^(-3)).

Potential emission reductions by converting agricultural residue biomass to synthetic fuels for vehicles and domestic cooking in China

Vehicle exhaust and transported biomass burning emissions are important air pollution sources in many urban areas,and domestic cooking with biomass fuels causes indoor air pollution in many rural *** agricultural waste-generated synthetic fuels can reduce emissions both from vehicles and biomass *** estimate the potential benefits of synthetic diesel in Beijing,the emission factor model for the Beijing vehicle fleet was applied to estimate exhaust emissions for the 2015-2030 *** with 100%petroleum diesel,a 20%synthetic diesel blend reduced diesel fleet emissions by 24%for carbon monoxide,30%for total hydrocarbons,5.5%for nitrogen oxides,and 19%for fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of≤2.5μm(Pm2.5)while using 100%synthetic diesel decreased emissions by 36%for carbon monoxide,48%for total hydrocarbons,10%for nitrogen oxides,and 34%for *** use of biomass for producing synthetic fuels rather than burning in the field also reduces air *** 60g of Pm2.5 agricultural open-field burning emissions are avoided per liter of synthetic fuel *** solid crop residues with synthetic liquid fuels in household cooking would reduce Pm2.5 emissions by more than 90%.

Are midwestern fish retailers willing to pay more for regionally grown fresh-on-ice fish?

The fish and seafood market in the midwestern region of the United States is currently dominated by frozen products. Fish producers in the region may be able to market their products as fresh, regionally grown and farmed fish. Fish producers may be able to supply fresh fish products that have not been previously frozen but preserved fresh with ice. The study examined retailers’ willingness to pay more for midwestern fresh fish adopting the literature on consumers’ willingness to pay for market services or products, assuming that retailers understand their customers, and that they are able to add any premiums paid for to their retail prices. The overall probability of retailers paying more for regionally grown fresh-on-ice fish is low though consistency in supply and sourcing out of state positively affected the probability to pay more. In spite of these positive factors on willingness to pay more for midwestern fresh-on-ice fish, midwestern fish producers would probably remain non-competitive in the fresh-on-ice fish market in the short and medium term, and should continue to focus on the live market.

Enhancing heat transfer at the micro-scale using elastic turbulence

Small concentrations of a high-molecular-weight polymer have been used to create so-called ＂elastic tur- bulence＂ in a micro-scale serpentine channel geometry. It is known that the interaction of large elastic stresses created by the shearing motion within the fluid flow with streamline curvature of the serpentine geometry leads initially to a purely-elastic instability and then the generation of elastic turbulence. We show that this elastic turbulence enhances the heat transfer at the micro-scale in this geometry by up to 300% under creeping flow conditions in comparison to that achieved by the equivalent Newtonian fluid flow.

Peginterferon Lambda-1a, a New Therapeutic for Hepatitis C Infection, from Bench to Clinic

Chronic infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is estimated to affect approximately 3% of the world's population and cause 350,000 deaths each *** number of years,the standard of care has been combination therapy with recombinant alfa interferons—originally as native proteins but more recently as polyethyleneglycol-modified derivatives—and ribavirin,with the recent addition of an NS3 protease inhibitor for HCV genotype ***,therapeutic alfa interferons are associated with a significant burden of treatment-limiting adverse events,including musculoskeletal and influenza-like symptoms,hematologic cytopenias,autoimmune disease,fatigue,and other neurologic *** 2003,a team at ZymoGenetics (now a fully owned subsidiary of Bristol-myers Squibb) and a second,independent group simultaneously identified a new class of interferons—the type Ⅲ lambda interferons—with near-identical activity to the type Ⅰ alfa interferons in hepatocytes but with an unrelated and less ubiquitous *** evaluation of the type Ⅲ interferon system demonstrated antiviral activity against HCV in vitro with limited activity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and other nonhepatocyte cell types,supporting its development as a potentially better-tolerated therapy for viral *** lambda-1a (Lambda) is an investigational type Ⅲ therapeutic agent originally developed at ZymoGenetics that is currently in Phase 3 studies for the treatment of *** this review,we describe the selection of the Lambda molecule and its preclinical and early clinical development,and how the resulting data have helped to establish the differentiated safety profile for Lambda—with fewer influenza-like and musculoskeletal symptoms and less hematologic toxicity than the alfa interferons—that was seen in later studies.
