We are evaluating dryland cotton production in m.rtin County, Texas, m.asuring cotton lint yield per unit of rainfall. Our goal is to collect rainfall data per 250 - 400 ha. Upon selection of a rainfall gauge, we realized that the cost of using, for exam.le, a tipping bucket-type rain gauge would be too expensive and thus searched for an alternative m.thod. We selected an all-in-one com.ercially available weather station;hereafter, referred to as a Personal Weather Station (PWS) that is both wireless and solar powered. Our objective was to evaluate average m.asurem.nts of rainfall obtained with the PWS and to com.are these to m.asurem.nts obtained with an autom.tic weather station (AWS). For this purpose, we installed four PWS deployed within 20 m.of the Plant Stress and Water Conservation m.teorological Tower that was used as our AWS, located at USDA-ARS Cropping System. Research Laboratory, Lubbock, TX. In addition, we m.asured and com.ared hourly average values of short-wave irradiance (Rg), air tem.erature (Tair) and relative hum.dity (RH), and wind speed (WS), and calculated values of dewpoint tem.erature (Tdew). This com.arison was done over a 242-day period (1 October 2022-31 m.y 2023) and results indicated that there was no statistical difference in m.asurem.nts of rainfall between the PWS and AWS. Hourly average values of Rg m.asured with the PWS and AWS agreed on clear days, but PWS m.asurem.nts were higher on cloudy days. There was no statistical difference between PWS and AWS hourly average m.asurem.nts of Tair, RH, and calculated Tdew. Hourly average m.asurem.nts of Rg and WS were m.re variable. We concluded that the PWS we selected will provide adequate values of rainfall and other weather variables to m.et our goal of evaluating dryland cotton lint yield per unit rainfall.

The quantitative induction of VIN3 by low tem.eratures is required for PRC2 repression of FLC and prom.tion of flowering （vernalization） in Arabidopsis. Histone acetylation, a chrom.tin m.dification com.only associated with gene transcription, increased on VIN3 chrom.tin in two spatially and tem.orally distinct phases in response to low tem.eratures. During short-term.cold exposure, histone H3 acetylation at the transcription start site rapidly increased, im.lying that it is required for VlN3 induction. Subsequent changes in histone H3 and H4 acetylation occurred following continued VIN3 transcription during prolonged cold exposure. m.m.ers of the SAGA-like transcriptional adaptor com.lex, including the histone acetyltransferase GCNS, which induces expression of the cold acclim.tion pathway genes, do not regulate VlN3 induction during cold exposure, indicating that the cold acclim.tion pathway and the cold-induction of VlN3 are regulated by different transcriptional m.chanism.. m.tations in the other 11 histone acetyltransferase genes did not affect VlN3 induction. However, nicotinam.de, a histone deacetyiase inhibitor, induced VIN3 and altered histone acetylation at the VIN3 locus. VIN3 induction was proportional to the length of nicotinam.de treatm.nt, which was associated with an early-flowering phenotype and repression of FLC. However, unlike vernalization, the repression of FLC was independent of VIN3 activity. Nicotinam.de treatm.nt did not cause a change in the expression of any genes in the autonom.us pathway or m.m.ers of the PRC2 com.lex, the well characterized repressors of FLC. Our data suggest that FLC is repressed via a novel pathway involving the SIR2 class of histone deacetylases.

We apply variational autoencoders(VAE)to X-ray diffraction(XRD)data analysis on both sim.lated and experim.ntal thin-film.*** show that crystal structure representations learned by a VAE reveal latent inform.tion,such as the structural sim.larity of textured diffraction *** other artificial intelligence(AI)agents are effective at classifying XRD data into known phases,a sim.larly conditioned VAE is uniquely effective at knowing what it doesn’t know:it can rapidly identify data outside the distribution it was trained on,such as novel phases and *** capabilities dem.nstrate that a VAE is a valuable AI agent for aiding m.terials discovery and understanding XRD m.asurem.nts both‘on-the-fly’and during post hoc analysis.

Outburst of coal and gas represents a significant risk to the health and safety of m.ne personnel working in developm.nt and longwall production face *** have been over 878 outburst events recorded in twenty-two Australian underground coal *** outburst incidents have been associated with abnorm.l geological *** of Australian outburst incidents and m.ning experience in conditions where gas content was above current threshold levels are presented and *** experience suggests that for gas con-tent below 9.0 m.3/t,m.ning in carbon dioxide(CO2)rich seam.gas conditions does not pose a greater risk of outburst than m.ning in CH4 rich seam.gas *** experience also suggests that where no abnorm.l geological structures are present that m.ning in areas with gas content greater than the current accepted threshold levels can be undertaken with no discernible increase in outburst *** current approach to determ.ning gas content threshold lim.ts in Australian m.nes has been effective in prevent-ing injury from.outburst,however operational experience suggests the current m.thod is overly conser-vative and in som. cases the threshold lim.ts are low to the point that they provide no significant reduction in outburst *** factors that affect outburst risk,such as gas pressure,coal toughness and stress and geological structures are presently not incorporated into outburst threshold lim.ts adopted in Australian *** factors and the developm.nt of an outburst risk index applicable to Australian underground coal m.ning conditions are the subject of ongoing research.
