Ornamental Bee Plants as Foraging Resources for Urban Bees in Southern Brazil

Ornamental plants are distinguished by the shape and color of their leaves/flowers and their use in landscaping and gardening. In urban areas, their presence is relevant for the maintenance of bees. Aiming to list the ornamental bee plants species occurring in Santa Catarina State (SC), southern Brazil, a survey of forage resources for bees, recorded in the State, was performed. We refer all published works developed in SC (resulting in the period 1983-2014) which include data from reports of scientific research, monographs, dissertations, Masters Dissertations, Doctoral Thesis, annals of scientific events, scientific articles and books. From the 28 ensuant works, we listed, as ornamental bee plants occurring in SC, 201 species, of 156 genera and 66 botanical families. Of these species, 92 are native (N), 26 endemic to Brazil and 109 exotic (E). Families with more ornamental bee species are: Fabaceae (22 species), Asteraceae (20), Solanaceae (11), Rosaceae (10) and Lamiaceae (8). The most cited species are: Lantana camara L. (N) (Verbenaceae) (9 quotes), Aloysia virgata (N) (Ruiz & Pav.) Juss. (Verbenaceae) (8), Hedychium coronarium J. Koenig (naturalized) (Zingiberaceae) (6) and Brachyscome multifida (E) (Asteraceae) (5), regarding habitus, herbs (48.5%) predominate, followed by bushes (21.5%), trees (16.5%) and vines (10.5%). Preferred colours of flowers by bees are, in decreasing order: white, yellow, red/pink, and others. The genus Ipomoea, Calliandra, Passiflora, Prunus and Senecio have more ornamental bee plant species. A large botanical diversity arises, demonstrating the possibilities for urban bee foraging and ornamental featuring, in a perspective of sustainability.

Initial Development of Cowpea Bean Fertilized with Natural Phosphate in the Brazilian Cerrado Soil

Cowpea, string Bean, or Macassar bean [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] presents a short life cycle, low water requirement, develops in soils of low fertility, and has the ability to fix nitrogen from the air. In the Cerrado, the oxisols occupy practically all the flat to soft-wavy areas with little reserve of nutrients for the plants, in general, they are soils with great limitations of fertility. A source of alternative phosphate fertilization is the use of reactive natural phosphates. The reactive natural phosphate of Bayóvar presents intermediate solubility between the sources of soluble phosphates and the natural phosphates. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the initial development of Cowpea beans fertilized with the natural Bayóvar phosphate used for cultivation of the Brazilian Cerrado Oxisol. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six doses of phosphorus (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 mg·dm-3) using natural Bayovar phosphate as a source in four replications. The species used in this study was the legume cowpea bean [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] cultivar Tumucumaque. The treatments were applied using the natural phosphate Bayóvar as a source of phosphorus (29% of P2O5). At 33 daS (days after sowing), the variable number of leaves of the Cowpea bean was analyzed and at 40 daS, the variables plant height, SPAD chlorophyll index (Soil Plant Analysis Development) and stem diameter were analyzed. For all variables analyzed there was a significant effect. The initial development of the cowpea bean cultivated in the Brazilian Cerrado Oxisol was significantly influenced by the Bayóvar natural phosphate fertilization with the best phosphorus (P2O5) doses in the range of 200 to 350 mg·

Objective: To evaluate the profile of the Brazilianvaginal ring user, reasons for choosing it, satisfaction, menstrual pattern, tolerability, efficacy, side effects and reasons for discontinuation. Methods: We reviewed the files of 148 users who attended the Hospital de Jacarepaguáand private clinics, between 2005 and 2011, in a total of 3107 cycles. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and regression models were used in statistical analysis. Results: The profile was: single, nulligravida, 30 years (mean) and with university education. The previous contraception used was mostly the oral hormonal contraception (75.7%). Women chose the ring for: practicality (32.4%), forgetting the pill (32.4%) and irregular vaginal bleeding (13.5%). The satisfaction degree was 80.5% (119). There were good cycle control and no pregnancies. Thirty-eight patients discontinued the use (25.7%). The main reasons were wish for pregnancy (6%), spotting (3.4%) and increased vaginal discharge (2.7%). At the end of the first year, use of the greatest reduction of continuity probability was observed (19.3%). Women with side effects were 68% less likely to be satisfied with the method than those without (p-value Conclusion: Nuvaring®is an excellent contraceptiveoption due to its sefficacy, cycle control, tolerability, practicality and safety.

The biology of a koinobiont parasitoid of leaf-cutting ant larvae, Szelenyiopria talitae (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae), was studied from naturally infested Acromyrmex subterraneus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) nests. Nests were collected in the field from the Atlantic rainforest biome in the state of Rio de Janeiro. A total of fifty-three nests were collected from 2015 to 2018. Parasitized nests were only found during the months of September and October. Approximately 22% of the nests collected over a four-year period were found to have been parasitized by S. talitae. The mean within-nest parasitism rate was 66.3%. This diapriid displayed both solitary (14%) and gregarious parasitism (86%), with up to a maximum of 12 parasitoids developing within a single host. Gregarious parasitism with two (29%) or three (21%) S. talitae per host was most frequently observed. There was a positive correlation between the number of parasitoids per host and host size (dry weight), indicating that S. talitae females oviposited a higher number of eggs in larger hosts. Winter Oilseed Crops after Soybeans as Tools for Weed Management in Brazilian Savannah Cropping Systems

We aimed with this study to evaluate the potential of oilseed crops planted following soybean, in terms of their ability to inhibit the occurrence of weed species under Brazilian Savannah cropping systems. The long-term experiment was installed in 2010 at Dourados, MS, Brazil, and in completely randomized blocks design with five replications with 12 × 24 m plot size. For three consecutive years (2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13), soybeans were planted in all the area by October/November being harvested in February/March, when previously marked plots were planted in April with: (1) radish (Raphanus sativus);(2) rapeseed (Brassica napus);(3) crambe (Crambe abyssinica);(4) winter fallow-no plantation after soybeans. In all years the same crop was repeated at the same plots, with no crop rotation. Phytosociological characterization of weed species was carried out in winter (after oilseeds harvest), pre-planting and post-emergence of soybean for the three years. Relative abundance, frequency and dominance, as well as the importance value for each species, was obtained. Areas were also intra-characterized by the coefficients of Simpson, Shannon-Weiner and Shannon-Weiner’s Evenness Proportion, and areas were compared for species dissimilarity with Jaccard’s presence-only coefficient, by multivariate cluster analysis. Oilseed crops definitely contribute for sustainable weed management as a cultural tool. The most important oilseed crop weeds in the Savannah-like region of Brazil were Amaranthus hybridus, Richardia brasiliensis, Lepidium virginicum, Leonotis nepetifolia and Hybanthus parviflorus. After three years of repetitive crop succession, some weeds were selected, and rotation in Winter is advised at least every two or three years.

Responses of the perfused liver of neonatal type 2 diabetic rats to gluconeogenic and ammoniogenic substrates

The responses of livers from rats with type 2 diabetes to alanine (gluconeogenesis and ammonia detoxification) and other gluconeogenic substrates were investigated. The experimental system was the isolated perfused rat liver. Neonatal type 2 diabetes was induced with streptozotocin. Ammoniogenesis from endogenous substrates was 610% higher in livers from diabetic rats when compared to the control condition. Alanine (2.5 mM) ammoniogenesis was 285% higher in livers of diabetic rats. Gluconeogenesis from the following substrates was smaller in the liver of diabetic rats: Alanine (?43.5%), lactate (?28.3%) and glycerol (?30.5%). Pyruvate gluconeogenesis was normal. The high rate of ammoniogenesis explains the moderate hyperammonemia of type 2 diabetic rats. The enzymatic machinery of the gluconeogenic pathway of type 2 diabetic rats seems to be adapted to low rates of glucose removal by extrahepatic tissues. A significant contribution of gluconeogenesis to the fasting hyperglycemia can be expected only by short-term up-regulation mechanisms.
