Current study evaluated the effect of a fine and coarsely ground insoluble dietary fibre source on the gastrointestinal development of suckling *** hulls(OH)were selected as a model feedstuff,rich in cellulose,lignin,and insoluble dietary *** experimental supplemental diets were formulated:a finely ground,low fibre and nutrient dense diet served as control(CON).For the 2 high fibre diets,15%heat-treated starch in CON was exchanged with OH,either finely(OH-f)or coarsely ground(OH-c).Litters of 10 primi-and multiparous sows(mean litter size 14.6±0.84)were *** a litter,experimental diets were allotted to triplets of 4 *** approximately 12 d of age,piglets’individual feed intakes were recorded 2 times per day when separated from their dam for 70 *** could suckle with their dam for the remainder of the *** d 24 and 25,from the total pool of 120 piglets,seven healthy well-eating piglets per treatment were selected for post-mortem evaluation,resulting in 14 replicates per *** of OH-c and OH-f did not impede clinical health and production performance of *** full stomach weights tended to be greater for OH-c compared to OH-f whereas CON was intermediate(P=0.083).Supplementing OH significantly increased ileal villus height and caecal dry matter concentration(Psed its length,contents weight,short-chain fatty acid concentration and reduced total bacterial count as well asγ-proteobacteria count and proportion(Pment specifically increased full gastrointestinal tract weight and caecum contents weight compared to piglets fed CON and ***,OH-c reduced colonic crypt depth when compared to OH-f(P=0.018).In conclusion,supplementing OH to a diet for suckling piglets exerted subtle developmental effects on gastrointestinal morphology and colonic microbial *** effects were largely independent from the particle size of the OH.

modelling erosion of a single rock block using a coupled CFD-DEm approach

Rock block removal is the prevalent physical mechanism for rock erosion and could affect the stability of dam foundations and *** this,understanding of block removal is still inadequate because of the complex interactions among block characteristics,hydraulic forces,and erosive processes acting on the ***,based on a previously conducted physical experiment of erosion of a single rock block,the removal processes of two different protruding blocks are represented by a coupled computational fluid dynamics-discrete element model(CFD-DEm)approach under varied flow ***,the blocks could be rotated with respect to the flow direction to consider the effect of the discontinuity orientation on the block removal *** results visualize the entire block removal *** simulations reproduce the effects of the discontinuity orientation on the critical flow velocity inducing block incipient motion and the trajectory of the block motion observed in the physical *** numerical results present a similar tendency of the critical velocities at different discontinuity orientations but have slightly lower *** trajectory of the block in the simulations fits well with the experimental *** relationship between the dimensionless critical shear stress and discontinuity orientation observed from the simulations shows that the effect of block protrusion becomes more dominant on the block incipient motion with the increase of relative protrusion *** our knowledge,this present study is the first attempt to use the coupled finite volume method(FVm)-DEm approach for modelling the interaction behavior between the block and the flowing water so that the block removal process can be reproduced and analyzed.

AIm： To evaluate the safety and clinical efficacy of a new immunotherapy using both α-Gal epitope-pulsed dendritic cells （DCs） and cytokine-induced killer cells. mETHODS： Freshly collected hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） tumor tissues were incubated with a mixture of neuraminidase and recombinant αl,3-galactosyltrans- ferase （αI,3GT） to synthesize α-Gal epitopes on car- bohydrate chains of the glycoproteins of tumor mem- branes. The subsequent incubation of the processed membranes in the presence of human natural anti-Gal IgG resulted in the effective phagocytosis to the tumor membrane by DCs. Eighteen patients aged 38-78 years with stage 111 primary HCC were randomly chosen for the study; 9 patients served as controls, and 9 patients were enrolled in the study ***： The evaluation demonstrated that the pro- cedure was safe; no serious side effects or autoimmune diseases were observed. The therapy significantly pro- longed the survival of treated patients as compared with the controls （17.1 ± 2.01 mo vs 10.1 ±4.5 mo, P = 0.00121）. After treatment, all patients in the study group had positive delayed hypersensitivity and robust systemic cytotoxicity in response to tumor lysate as measured by interferon-y-expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells using enzyme-linked immunosorbent spot assay. They also displayed increased numbers of CD8-, CD45RO- and CD56-positive cells in the peripheral blood and decreased α-fetoprotein level in the se- rum. CONCLUSION： This new tumor-specific immunotherapy is safe, effective and has a great potential for the treat- ment of tumors.

Aim: To investigate the relation between change in systemic blood pressures an d change in intraocular pressure. methods: This was a population based study of people 43-86 years old living in Beaver dam, Wisconsin. measurements at baselin e (1988-90) and 5 year follow up of systemic blood pressures, intraocular press ures, and history of use of blood pressure medications. Results: Intraocular pre ssures were significantly correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressures at both baseline and follow up. There were significant direct correlations betw een changes in systemic blood pressures and changes in intraocular pressure. The re was a 0.21 (95%CI: 0.16 to 0.27) mm Hg increase in IOP for a 10 mm Hg increa se in systolic and 0.43 (0.35 to 0.52) mm Hg increase in IOP for a 10 mm Hg incr ease in diastolic blood pressure. Further adjustment for diabetes and medication use did not alter these associations. Decreased systolic or diastolic blood pre ssures of more than 10 mm Hg over 5 years were significantly associated with dec reased IOP. Conclusions: Reduced systemic blood pressure is associated with redu ced intraocular pressure. T5his finding should be evaluated in other studies, es pecially with respect to the possibility of resultant decreased risk of open ang le glaucoma.
