This study aims at identifying possible correlations between shapes, types of geophysical anomalies and borehole productivity according to geological and hydrogeotogical contexts. The methodology adopted was a two-pronged one--the first step sought to：（1） interpret the electrical resistivity values from horizontal profiling and vertical electrical sounding implemented in Seno province that preceded the drilling of 513 boreholes; （ii） interpret data from pumping tests carried out on boreholes having a discharge superior to 1 m3/h （＂positive borehole＂） by using Cooper-Jacob＇s method. In the second step, according to geology, authors tried to identify possible correlations between each of the qualitative geophysical parameters： ~shape of anomaly〉〉, tttype of anomaly〉〉 and ~〈type curve〉〉 on the one hand, and hydrogeological parameters such as discharge, alteration thickness, transmissivity and saturated level on the other. The results of this study have shown that the chances of having a positive borehole in Seno province are higher when the type of anomaly is TCC （80%）, shape of anomaly is ＂W＂ and when type curve is ＂H＂（80%） for all geological formations. Granitic formations are those that record higher discharges while schists record high transmissivity values.

This work deals with the estimation of solar radiation through a solar tracker aimed at evaluating the effect of solar tracking on the solar deposit in Burkina Faso. Using a two-axis solar tracking system, we experimentally measured solar radiation at our Joseph KI-ZERBO University site and compared it with that obtained by a numerical simulation run using Fortran programming software based on a mathematical model by Brichambaut. The results obtained from the mathematical and experimental studies show that, with a solar tracker, on a clear-sky day, solar irradiation is between 800 W·m−2 and 1000 W·m−2 between about 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., i.e. a duration of 8 hours of insolation. Analysis of the numerical and experimental results shows very good quantitative and qualitative agreement, with an average relative error of 18%.

Introduction: Sickle cell anaemia is a hereditary disease that combines physical and psychological manifestations, including suicidal tendencies. So far, to our knowledge, no study has been conducted on suicidal behaviours among people with sickle cell disease in Cameroon. This is what justifies our study on the prevalence and factors related to suicidal behaviors in our study population. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, analytical study of 171 sickle cell patients aged from 12 years upwards who came to the sickle cell disease care service of the Laquintinie Hospital in Douala, over a period of 6 months, that is, from 1 January to 31 June 2022. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire with questions on suicidal behaviours based on the “MINI” (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview). The data were processed using the SPSS 26.0 software. The related factors were studied in both a bivariate and multivariate analysis. Results: Female sickle cell patients accounted for 60.2% of the sample. The mean age was 23.36 ± 8.42 years. Suicidal ideation was prevalent in 56% of cases and 13% attempted suicide. The factors most associated with suicidal ideation were: primary level of education (OR = 0.08 (0.09 - 0.79);p = 0.03), feeling unworthy of life (OR = 0.40 (0.08 - 1.96);p = 0.02), not often being considered by those around them (OR = 2.97 (1.26 - 6.99);p = 0.01), lack of family support (OR = 0.34 (0.15 - 0.77);p = 0.01). Meanwhile, the factors associated with suicide attempts were: the fact of being rarely exposed to suicide-related media (OR = 4.17 (1.40 - 71.80);p = 0.03), and a constant feeling of sadness when returning home (OR = 18.02 (1.59 - 20.55);p = 0.01). Conclusion: More than half of sickle cell patients had had suicidal thoughts and 1/6 had made at least one suicide attempt, women and young adults being the most concerned. It is therefore necessary to ensure optimum psychological care for patients with sickle cell disease.

The Sangha River basin is the largest sub-basin of the Congo River basin, which drains the northern part of the Republic of the Congo-Brazzaville. It is the most important economic zone in this part of the country, with a strong timber industry, agriculture and hydroelectricity. The catchment also boasts the country’s third-largest river port, located in the town of Ouesso. Unfortunately, increasingly frequent low-water levels in recent years have led to a decline in river navigation and economic activities. So, the aim of this study is to show the effects of climate change over the last six decades in the Sangha watershed at Ouesso hydrological station, located in the north of the Republic of the Congo-Brazzaville, and elucidate its impact on water resources. To achieve this, several statistical and hydrological methods were used. The application of change-point or shift detection tests to flow series from 1961 to 2020 revealed variability in the hydrological cycle, characterized by two major phases of homogeneous flows: a wet surplus phase and a dry deficit phase. The results show one shift in flood flows in 1971 (Buishand test), one shift in yearly average flows or modules in 1971 (Pettitt test and Buishand test), and one shift in low-water flows in 1976, with all two tests. These disruptions were accompanied by a drop in flow of around 15.63%, 21.70% and 35.67%, on average, for floods, modules, and low-water, respectively, a drop in rainfall of around 9.6% and a rise in temperature of around 0.76?C. These flows show an overall downward trend. The calculated recession coefficients show that, over the entire study period, a recession occurred in March 1985.

Calibration and Validation of the GR2M Hydrologic Model in the Kouilou-Niari Basin in Southwestern Congo-Brazzaville

The hydrologic simulation of a catchment area, described as the transformation of rainfall into runoff, generally uses hydrologic model. This work opts for the global conceptual hydrologic model GR2M, a monthly time step model, to study the Kouilou-Niari basin, the second most important ones of the Republic of Congo. This includes two parameters to model the hydrologic behavior of a catchment area. The choice of the conceptual model GR2M is justified by the reduced number of parameters and the monthly time scale. The objective of this study is to determine the characteristic parameters of the GR2M model, by a calibrating and a validating procedure. The use of these parameters enables to follow the evolution of the water resources from the climatic variables. It has been first carried out a characterization of some physical, geological and climatic factors governing the flow, by dealing with the main climatic variables which constitute the inputs of the hydrologic model. Then, a hydrologic rainfall-runoff modeling allows to calibrate and validate the model at monthly time scale. Taking into account the number of parameters involved in hydrologic processes and the complexity of the cathment area, this model gives acceptable results throughout the Kouilou-Niari basin. The values of the Nash-Sutcliffe criterion and those of the correlation coefficient obtained are greater than 80% in validation, which explains the performance and robustness of the GR2M model on this basin.

Surgical Treatment of Traumatic Brain Injuries of Children in Abidjan: Difficulties, Results and Prospects

Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children is a common cause of emergency department admission to our institution. TBI constitutes a real public health problem in developed countries and marked increase in underdeveloped countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of neurosurgical treatment of TBI in children at the neurosurgery department of Yopougon Teaching Hospital, while underlining the difficulties of the adequate management of this affection in Abidjan. Patients and Methods: It was a retrospective, descriptive monocentric study performed in the neurosurgery department, of Yopougon Teaching Hospital-Abidjan (Ivory Coast) from January 2000 to December 2017. We included all patients less than 16 years old admitted to the emergency department and all admitted in neurosurgery department for a TBI with a cerebral tomodensitometry and/or a magnetic resonance imaging having undergone a neurosurgical treatment. Results: During the study period 2825 cases of TBI in children aged less than 16 years old admitted to pediatric emergencies of our institution;among them 1020 (36%) presented clinical abnormalities and/or imaging. 292 (10.34%) children were hospitalized in neurosurgery department. 108 (36.9%) had surgical treatment. The mean age of patients was 7.8 ± 0.80 years with a male predominance (64%). Of the 108 children who had been operated on, 41 had acute extra-dural hematoma evacuation, 22 had a cranio-cerebral wound healing, 36 had a lift from a fracture depressing the skull and 9 had an acute subdural hematoma evacuation with a decompressive flap. The mean delay between diagnosis and surgical care was 104 ± 67.25 hours. The postoperative evolution at the last follow-up was favorable in 96 (88.8%) children with sequelae in 12 children (6 language disorders, 2 epileptic seizures and 4 motor deficits). Experimental Alternative to the Determination of the Thermal Dependence of the Complex Modulus of Asphalt Mixes in Dry Tropical Areas

Current pavement design methods do not allow for the reduction of early deformation of the surface layers of bituminous pavements in the city of Ouagadougou. Weather conditions combined with traffic, particularly during heat waves, are factors. The temperature at the surface of the bituminous pavement can reach 62˚C but the complex modulus associated with this temperature is not taken into account in the design, hence the interest in proposing laws of dependence of the complex moduli is taken into account in the maximum temperatures of the pavement surface. The objective of this paper is to propose an experimental method to determine the temperature dependence of the complex moduli of asphalt mixes for temperatures between 40˚C and 70˚C. This experimental method consists of performing axial compression tests on cylindrical asphalt specimens. It was applied to three different formulas of bituminous mixes, intended for the wearing course, obtained from mixes of crushed granites, granular classes 6/10, 4/6 and 0/4, pure bitumens of grade 50/70, 35/50 and modified bitumen of grade 10/65. The comparative study of the experimental results obtained with the results of a semi-empirical methodology revealed a root mean square deviation from the mean of between 6.58% and 14.8% of the norms of the complex moduli (modulus of rigidity) of the asphalt mixes for a fixed frequency of solicitations of 10 Hz. The consistency of these results with data from the literature led to the initial conclusion that asphalt mixes formulated with 35/50 and 10/65 bitumen would have better compressive strength than those formulated with 50/70 bitumen, for exposure temperatures between 40˚C and 70˚C. This experimental approach could be an alternative to the complex modulus test for determining the modulus of rigidity for design purposes under real pavement exposure conditions in the city of Ouagadougou during heat waves.

Artificial Intelligence in Steam Cracking Modeling: A Deep Learning Algorithm for Detailed Effluent Prediction

Chemical processes can bene t tremendously from fast and accurate ef uent composition prediction for plant design, control, and optimization. The Industry 4.0 revolution claims that by introducing machine learning into these elds, substantial economic and environmental gains can be achieved. The bottleneck for high-frequency optimization and process control is often the time necessary to perform the required detailed analyses of, for example, feed and product. To resolve these issues, a framework of four deep learning arti cial neural networks (DL ANNs) has been developed for the largest chemicals production process steam cracking. The proposed methodology allows both a detailed characterization of a naphtha feedstock and a detailed composition of the steam cracker ef uent to be determined, based on a limited number of commercial naphtha indices and rapidly accessible process characteristics. The detailed char- acterization of a naphtha is predicted from three points on the boiling curve and paraf ns, iso-paraf ns, ole ns, naphthenes, and aronatics (PIONA) characterization. If unavailable, the boiling points are also estimated. Even with estimated boiling points, the developed DL ANN outperforms several established methods such as maximization of Shannon entropy and traditional ANNs. For feedstock reconstruction, a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.3 wt% is achieved on the test set, while the MAE of the ef uent predic- tion is 0.1 wt%. When combining all networks using the output of the previous as input to the next the ef uent MAE increases to 0.19 wt%. In addition to the high accuracy of the networks, a major bene t is the negligible computational cost required to obtain the predictions. On a standard Intel i7 processor, predictions are made in the order of milliseconds. Commercial software such as COILSIM1D performs slightly better in terms of accuracy, but the required central processing unit time per reaction is in the order of seconds.
