Distribution and bioavailability of mercury in size-fractioned atmospheric particles around an ultra-low emission power plant in Southwest China

Ultra-low emission(ULE)technology retrofits significantly impact the particulate-bound mercury(Hg)emissions from coal-fired power plants(CFPPs);however,the distribution and bioavailability of Hg in size-fractioned particulate matter(PM)around the ULE-retrofitted CF-PPs are less ***,total Hg and its chemical speciation in TSP(total suspended particles),PM_(10)(aerodynamic particle diameter≤10μm)and PM_(2.5)(aerodynamic particle diameter≤2.5μm)around a ULE-retrofitted CFPP in Guizhou Province were *** PM_(2.5)concentration was higher around this ULE-retrofitted CFPP than that in the intra-regional urban cities,and it had higher mass Hg concentration than other sizefractioned *** Hg concentrations in PM had multifarious sources including CFPP,vehicle exhaust and biomass combustion,while they were significantly higher in autumn and winter than those in other seasons(P40%).Mass concentrations of exchangeable,HCl-soluble,elemental,and residual Hg in PM_(2.5)were higher than those in other size-fractioned PM,and were markedly elevated in autumn and winter(P<0.05).In PM_(2.5),HCl-soluble Hg presented a significantly positive relationship with elemental Hg(P<0.05),while residual Hg showed the significantly positive relationships with HCl-soluble Hg and elemental Hg(P<0.01).Overall,these results suggested that atmospheric PM-bound Hg around the ULE-retrofitted CFPP tends to accumulate in finer PM,and has higher bioavailable fractions,while has potential transformation between chemical speciation.

Effects of soil properties on production and bioaccumulation of methylmercury in rice paddies at a mercury mining area,China

Rice paddy soil is recognized as the hotspot of mercury（Hg） methylation, which is mainly a biotic process mediated by many abiotic factors. In this study, effects of key soil properties on the production and bioaccumulation of Hg and methylmercury（MeHg） in Hg-contaminated rice paddies were investigated. Rice and soil samples were collected from the active Hg smelting site and abandoned Hg mining sites（a total of 124 paddy fields） in the Wanshan Mercury Mine, China. Total Hg（THg） and MeHg in soils and rice grains, together with sulfur（S）,selenium（Se）, organic matter（OM）, nitrogen（N）, phosphorus（P）, mineral compositions（e.g., SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3） and pH in soils were quantified. The results showed that long-term Hg mining activities had resulted in THg and MeHg contaminations in soil-rice system. The newly-deposited atmospheric Hg was more readily methylated relative to the native Hg already in soils, which could be responsible for the elevated MeHg levels in soils and rice grains around the active artificial Hg smelting site. The MeHg concentrations in soils and rice grains showed a significantly negative relationship with soil N/Hg, S/Hg and OM/Hg ratio possibly due to the formation of low-bioavailability Hg–S（N）–OM complexes in rhizosphere. The Hg–Se antagonism undoubtedly occurred in soil-rice system, while its role in bioaccumulation of MeHg in the MeHg-contaminated rice paddies was minor. However, other soil properties showed less influence on the production and bioaccumulation of MeHg in rice paddies located at the Wanshan Mercury Mine zone.

Effects of fulvic acid and humic acid from different sources on Hg methylation in soil and accumulation in rice

Humus is often used as an organic modifier to reduce the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in plants, but the effects of different humus components from different sources on the fate of mercury(Hg) in paddy fields are still unclear. Here, fulvic acid(FA) and humic acid(HA) extracted from composted straw(CS), composted cow dung(CCD), peat soil(PM) and lignite coal(LC) were used to understand their effects on the methylation and bioaccumulation of Hg in paddy soil by pot experiments. Amendments of both FA and HA largely increased the abundance of Hg-methylating microbes and low-molecular-weight organic matters(e.g, cysteine) in paddy soil. They were also found to change the aromaticity, molecular size and Chromophoric DOM concentration of DOM, and resulted in heterogeneous effects on migration and transformation of Hg. All the FA-amended treatments increased the mobility and methylation of Hg in soil and its absorption in roots. Nevertheless, FA from different sources have heterogeneous effects on transport of Hg between rice tissues. FA-CCD and FA-PM promoted the translocation of Me Hg from roots to rice grains by 32.95% and 41.12%, while FA-CS and FA-LC significantly inhibited the translocation of inorganic Hg(IHg) by 52.65% and 66.06% and of Me Hg by 46.65% and 36.23%, respectively. In contrast, all HA-amended treatments reduced the mobility of soil Hg, but promoted Hg methylation in soil. Among which, HA-CCD and HA-PM promoted the translocation of Me Hg in rice tissues by 88.95% and 64.10%, while its accumulation in rice grains by 28.43% and 28.69%, respectively. In general, the application of some FA and HA as organic modifiers to reduce Hg bioaccumulation in rice is not feasible.

Cavitation Behavior during Superplastic Deformation of AZ31 Magnesium Alloy

Superplasticity of AZ31 Mg alloy at the temperature range of 250-450℃ and stain rate range of 0.7×10^-3- 1.4×10^-1s^-1 was examined through uniaxial tensile *** microscopy （OM）and scanning electrom microscopy （SEM）were employed to investigate the morphology of cavities and surface relief near fracture surface,*** is shown that AZ31 Mg alloy starts to exhibit superplasticity for 300℃.The maximum elongation of 362.5% was obtained at 400℃ and strain rate of 0.7×10^-3s^-1,There exist many O-shaped cavities and filaments at the boundaries near fracture surface,The fracture of filaments results in intergranular cavity and the model for the formation of intergranular cavities is proposed .The growth of cavities is plasticity-controlled and the serrated boundaries of intergranular cavities agree with the results of surface relieves.

Superplastic Deformation Behavior of Hot-rolled AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Sheet at Elevated Temperatures

Uniaxial tensile tests were carride out in the temperature range of 250-450℃ and the strain rate range of 0.7×10^-3^-1.4×10^-1s^-1 to evaluate the superplasticity of AZ31 Mg aloy .The threshold stress which characterizes the difficulty for grain boundary sliding was calculated at various temperature .The surface relieves of superplastically deformed specimens were observde by using a scanning elctronic microscops （SEM）.Results show that ,at the temperature of 400℃ and strain rate of 1.7×10^-3^-1,the strain rate sensitivity exponent ,i e,m value reaches 0.47 and the maximum elongation of 362.5% is achieved .Grain boundary sliding （GBS）is the primary deformation mechanism and characterized by a pronounced improvement in the homogeneity with increasing temperatures.A large number of filaments were formed at the end of deformation and intergranular cavities produced with the necking and fracture of *** ,the model for the formation of intergranular cavities was proposed.

Elevated methylmercury production in mercury-contaminated soil and its bioaccumulation in rice:key roles of algal decomposition

Algal-derived organic matter(AOM)regulates methylmercury(MeHg)fate in aquatic ecosystems,whereas its role in MeHg production and bioaccumulation in Hg-contaminated paddies is *** and microcosm experiments were thus performed to understand the response characteristics of MeHg concentrations in soil and rice in different rice-growing periods to algal *** to the control,algal decomposition significantly increased soil water-soluble cysteine concentrations during the rice-tillering and grain-filling periods(P<0.05).It also significantly lowered the molecular weight of soil-dissolved organic matter(SDOM)during the rice-tillering period(P<0.05)and SDOM humification/aromaticity during the grain-filling *** to the control,AOM input increased the abundance of potential Hg and non-Hg methylators in ***,it also greatly increased soil MeHg concentrations by 25.6%-80.2%and 12.6%-66.1%during the rice-tillering and grain-filling periods,with an average of 42.25%and 38.42%,respectively,which were significantly related to the elevated cysteine in soil and the decrease in SDOM molecular weight(P<0.01).In the early stage(within 10 days of microcosm experiments),the MeHg concentrations in decayed algal particles showed a great decrease(P<0.01),suggesting a potential MeHg source in ***,algal decomposition greatly increased the MeHg concentrations and bioaccumulation factors in rice grains,by 72.30%and 16.77%,***,algal decomposition in Hg-contaminated paddies is a non-negligible factor promoting MeHg accumulation in soil-rice systems.

The recurrent extreme El Niño events are commonly linked to reduced vegetation growth and the land carbon sink over many but discrete regions of the Northern Hemisphere(NH).However,we reported here a pervasive and continuous vegetation greening and no weakened land carbon sink in the maturation phase of the 2015/2016 El Niño event over the NH(mainly in the extra-tropics),based on multiple evidences from remote sensing observations,global ecosystem model simulations and atmospheric CO_(2)*** discovered a significant compensation effect of the enhanced vegetation growth in spring on subsequent summer/autumn vegetation growth that sustained vegetation greening and led to a slight increase in the land carbon sink over the spring and summer of 2015(average increases of 23.34%and 0.63%in net ecosystem exchange from two independent datasets relative to a 5-years average before the El Niño event,respectively)and spring of 2016(6.82%),especially in the extra-tropics of the NH,where the water supply during the pre-growing-season(November of the previous year to March of the current year)had a positive *** seasonal compensation effect was much stronger than that in 1997 and 1998 and significantly alleviated the adverse impacts of the 2015/2016 El Niño event on vegetation growth during its maturation *** legacy effect of water supply during the pre-growing-season on subsequent vegetation growth lasted up to approximately six *** findings highlight the role of seasonal compensation effects on mediating the land carbon sink in response to episodic extreme El Niño events.

为揭示农业废弃有机物还田对土壤溶解性有机质(DOM)特性的影响,本研究通过淹水土培试验,结合紫外-荧光光谱技术和平行因子分析法,探究了土壤DOM含量、结构与组分对秸秆、牛粪及其堆肥产品输入的响应特征。结果表明,相比于对照组,添加秸秆、堆肥秸秆、牛粪和堆肥牛粪的处理组均明显提高了培养初期土壤溶解性有机碳(DOC)含量,降低了培养初期土壤DOM类蛋白组分含量(降幅分别为80.23%、83.89%、37.21%和86.68%),整体上提高了各时期土壤DOM的芳香性和疏水组分含量,堆肥产品还显著提高了土壤DOM腐殖化程度(P<0.05)。随着培养时间延长,各处理组土壤DOC、DOM类蛋白组分及类腐殖质组分含量均不同程度降低,且类蛋白组分降幅远高于类腐殖质组分。与添加秸秆相比,添加堆肥秸秆明显降低了培养初期、中期和末期的土壤DOC含量(降幅分别为60.78%、33.77%和45.53%)和DOM类蛋白组分含量(降幅分别为19.94%、34.75%和57.28%);而与牛粪处理组相比,堆肥牛粪处理组土壤DOC含量在各时期无明显改变,但芳香性、疏水组分含量和腐殖化水平均不同程度升高。研究表明,秸秆和牛粪还田整体上降低了土壤DOM中类蛋白组分含量,其堆肥产品均提升了土壤DOM的腐殖化水平,但两者的作用效果存在明显差异。

化学处理活性炭对汞等重金属离子具有良好的吸附特性。通过一系列测试获得了碘化和氯化活性炭预富集水体汞的优化方案。对实验室配制汞标准样品的测试表明,碘化和氯化活性炭对汞具有良好的吸附特性,而采样管的内径、活性炭的填充量以及过滤流速均影响活性炭预富集水体汞的效率。采用600mg的碘化活性炭采样管（内径：0.35cm）,在水体过滤流速为10r/min（7mL/min）~25r/min（17mL/min）的条件下,碘化活性炭对水体汞的吸附效率可达到95%以上。增加流速和采样管内径以及减少活性炭填充量均会降低活性炭对水体汞的吸附效率。同时进一步测试了碘化活性炭对高汞（万山汞矿区渗滤水,含量范围：37.68~321.57ng/L）和低汞（贵阳市降水,含量范围：2.76~9.98ng/L）等天然水体汞的预富集效率,其预富集效率的平均值分别为96.74%（n=8）和96.09%（n=8）。该研究为采用化学处理活性炭技术预富集天然水体汞以及开展水体汞同位素测试提供了一种全新方法。
