A review on anode materials for lithium/sodium-ion batteries

Since lithium-ion batteries(LIBs) have been substantially researched in recent years, they now possess exceptional energy and power densities, making them the most suited energy storage technology for use in developed and developing industries like stationary storage and electric cars, etc. Concerns about the cost and availability of lithium have prompted research into alternatives, such as sodium-ion batteries(SIBs), which use sodium instead of lithium as the charge carrier. This is especially relevant for stationary applications, where the size and weight of battery are less important. The working efficiency and capacity of these batteries are mainly dependent on the anode, cathode, and electrolyte. The anode,which is one of these components, is by far the most important part of the rechargeable battery.Because of its characteristics and its structure, the anode has a tremendous impact on the overall performance of the battery as a whole. Keeping the above in view, in this review we critically reviewed the different types of anodes and their performances studied to date in LIBs and SIBs. The review article is divided into three main sections, namely:(i) intercalation reaction-based anode materials;(ii) alloying reaction-based anode materials;and(iii) conversion reaction-based anode materials, which are further classified into a number of subsections based on the type of material used. In each main section, we have discussed the merits and challenges faced by their particular system. Afterward, a brief summary of the review has been discussed. Finally, the road ahead for better application of Li/Na-ion batteries is discussed, which seems to mainly depend on exploring the innovative materials as anode and on the inoperando characterization of the existing materials for making them more capable in terms of application in rechargeable batteries.

Fibrous-type flters are used to capture dust particles in mining and other occupations where personnel are exposed for prolonged periods.Dust cleansing devices including fooded-bed dust scrubbers use these mesh-type multi-layered flters.These flters trap dust particles efciently on their surface and inside their mesh.However,their continued operation leads to dust build-up and clogging.This results in increased resistance of the flter and lowered airfow rate through the scrubber.This could potentially enhance the exposure of the miners.A non-clogging self-cleaning impingement screen type dust flter was designed by the authors for use in mining and industrial dust cleansing applications.The flter guides dirt-laden air through rapidly turning paths which forces it to shed heavier particles.The particles impact one of the impermeable solid metallic flter surfaces and are removed from the airstream.A full cone water spray installed upstream prevents any surface buildup of dust.This paper summaried the computer models generated to show the flter operations and laboratory experiments including optical particle counting to establish the cleaning efciency.

In the recent decades,effects of blast loads on natural and man-made structures have gained considerable attention due to increase in threat from various man-made activities.Site-specific empirical relationships for calculation of blast-induced vibration parameters like peak particle velocity(PPV) and peak particle displacement(PPD) are commonly used for estimation of blast loads in design.However,these relationships are not able to consider the variation in rock parameters and uncertainty of in situ conditions.In this paper,a total of 1089 published blast data of various researchers in different rock sites have been collected and used to propose generalized empirical model for PPV by considering the effects of rock parameters like unit weight,rock quality designation(RQD),geological strength index(GSI),and uniaxial compressive strength(UCS).The proposed PPV model has a good correlation coefficient and hence it can be directly used in prediction of blast-induced vibrations in rocks.Standard errors and coefficient of correlations of the predicted blast-induced vibration parameters are obtained with respect to the observed field data.The proposed empirical model for PPV has also been compared with the empirical models available for blast vibrations predictions given by other researchers and found to be in good agreement with specific cases.

Tracking Control of Uncertain Nonlinear Systems With Unknown Constant Input Delay

A robust delay compensator has been developed for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with an unknown constant input delay.The control law consists of feedback terms based on the integral of past control values and a novel filtered tracking error,capable of compensating for input delays.Suitable Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals are used to prove global uniformly ultimately bounded(GUUB)tracking,provided certain sufficient gain conditions,dependent on the bound of the delay,are satisfied.Simulation results illustrate the performance and robustness of the controller for different values of input delay.

For the successful operation of any industry or plant continuous availability of power supply is essential.Many of the large-scale plants established their power generation units.Marine power plant having two generators is also fall in this category.In this study,an effort is made to derive and optimize the availability of a marine power plant having two generators,one switch board and distribution switchboards.For this purpose,a mathematical model is proposed using Markov birth death process by considering exponentially distributed failure and repair rates of all the subsystems.The availability expression of marine power plant is derived.Metaheuristic algorithms namely dragonfly algorithm(DA),bat algorithm(BA)and whale optimization(WOA)are employed to optimize the availability of marine power plant.It is revealed that whale optimization algorithm outperforms over dragonfly algorithm(DA),and bat algorithm(BA)in optimum availability prediction and parameter estimation.The numerical values of the availability and estimated parameters are appended as numerical results.The derived results can be utilized in development of maintenance strategies of marine power plants and to carry out design modifications.

提出了一种高效的风险导向型闭环油田开发(CLFD)工作流,使用油田开发中获取的数据信息不断改进油田开发方案。该方法整合了机器学习、智能选择和增加代表性油藏模型等手段,将这些手段与基于聚类的学习与进化算法结合,有效发掘决策变量的搜索空间。与以往研究不同,该方法考虑了闭环油田开发工作流的实施时间,使用实际时间线验证闭环油田开发工作流的实用性。为了认识数据同化和新测井数据在闭环油田开发工作流中的重要性,在不确定属性保持不变的苛刻油田条件下开展了研究;利用极为耗时的模拟模型,将闭环油田开发工作流用于特大型油田基准案例分析。研究表明,仅采用100种情景即可对一个强非均质性特大型油田的地质不确定性进行量化评价。与以往方法相比,该方法可以提效85%以上。提出了对闭环油田开发工作流的一些新认识,指出了闭环油田开发工作流在实际应用中存在的与数据同化有关的问题。

A Local Contrast Fusion Based 3D Otsu Algorithm for Multilevel Image Segmentation

To overcome the shortcomings of 1 D and 2 D Otsu’s thresholding techniques, the 3 D Otsu method has been developed.Among all Otsu’s methods, 3 D Otsu technique provides the best threshold values for the multi-level thresholding processes. In this paper, to improve the quality of segmented images, a simple and effective multilevel thresholding method is introduced. The proposed approach focuses on preserving edge detail by computing the 3 D Otsu along the fusion phenomena. The advantages of the presented scheme include higher quality outcomes, better preservation of tiny details and boundaries and reduced execution time with rising threshold levels. The fusion approach depends upon the differences between pixel intensity values within a small local space of an image;it aims to improve localized information after the thresholding process. The fusion of images based on local contrast can improve image segmentation performance by minimizing the loss of local contrast, loss of details and gray-level distributions. Results show that the proposed method yields more promising segmentation results when compared to conventional1 D Otsu, 2 D Otsu and 3 D Otsu methods, as evident from the objective and subjective evaluations.

Effective management of daily road traffic is a huge challenge for traffic personnel.Urban traffic management has come a long way from manual control to artificial intelligence techniques.Still real-time adaptive traffic control is an unfulfilled dream due to lack of low cost and easy to install traffic sensor with real-time communication capability.With increasing number of on-board Bluetooth devices in new generation automobiles,these devices can act as sensors to convey the traffic information indirectly.This paper presents the efficacy of road-side Bluetooth scanners for traffic data collection and big-data analytics to process the collected data to extract traffic parameters.Extracted information and analysis are presented through visualizations and tables.All data analytics and visualizations are carried out off-line in R Studio environment.Reliability aspects of the collected and processed data are also investigated.Higher speed of traffic in one direction owing to the geometry of the road is also established through data analysis.Increased penetration of smart phones and fitness bands in day to day use is also established through the device type of the data collected.The results of this work can be used for regular data collection compared to the traditional road surveys carried out annually or bi-annually.It is also found that compared to previous studies published in the literature,the device penetration rate and sample size found in this study are quite high and very encouraging.This is a novel work in literature,which would be quite useful for effective road traffic management in future.

Evaluation of load transfer mechanism under axial loads in a novel coupler of dual height rock bolts

The effective reinforcement of two or more overlying layers of mine openings in a single installation is usually done by coupling of two standard rock bolts mainly during the extraction of medium-thick coal seams.However,field observations show that the couplers of multiple bolts often degrade or break mostly at their connections.These types of failures can be avoided by strengthening the couplers of such multi-bolts assemblies.To achieve this,a novel threaded coupler system with an expansion shell was suggested in this paper.The newly designed coupler consists of a threaded tapered-plug-cumconnector with an expansion shell for connecting and tightening two standard rock bolts.An analytical model for evaluating the load distribution along the coupler subject to axial load was derived.Numerical analysis was performed to analyse the load transfer,deformation,and strains across the coupler including the factor of safety for the bolt-coupler-resin and bolt-coupler-expansion shell.The results validated the analytical model of the proposed coupler design,which provides better anchorage near the interface of the host rock mass.Thus,the developed coupler design would reduce the failures of the proposed coupler and stabilize laminated roof strata above the medium-thick coal seams in underground mines.
