Various numerical methods are available to model,simulate,analyse and interpret the results;however a major task is to select a reliable and intended tool to perform a realistic assessment of any *** a model to be a representative of the realistic mining scenario,a verified tool must be chosen to perform an assessment of mine roof support requirement and address the geotechnical risks associated with longwall *** dependable tools provide a safe working environment,increased production,efficient management of resources and reduce environmental impacts of *** various methods,for example,analytical,experimental and empirical are being adopted in mining,in recent days numerical tools are becoming popular due to the advancement in computer hardware and numerical *** rules based on past experiences do provide a general guide,however due to the heterogeneous nature of mine geology(i.e.,none of the mine sites are identical),numerical simulations of mine site specific conditions would lend better insights into some underlying *** paper highlights the use of a continuum mechanics based tool in coal mining with a mine scale *** continuum modelling can provide close to accurate stress fields and *** paper describes the use of existing mine data to calibrate and validate the model parameters,which then are used to assess geotechnical issues related with installing a new high capacity longwall mine at the mine site.A variety of parameters,for example,chock convergences,caveability of overlying sandstones,abutment and vertical stresses have been estimated.

Evaluation of mine scale longwall top coal caving parameters using continuum analysis

A mine-scale analysis of Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) is performed using a continuum mechanics finite element solver called COSFLOW. The uniqueness of COSFLOW is that it incorporates Cosserat continuum theory in its formulation for describing the load deformation of bedded rocks. It is shown that such a continuum based code is valuable for assessing the feasibility of introducing LTCC in any mine. Various LTCC parameters, for example chock convergences, top coal failure behavior, strata cavingmechanism, abutment stresses and vertical stresses, were evaluated for a mine using COSFLOW.

Numerical Modeling of Porous Flow in Fractured Rock and Its Applications in Geothermal Energy Extraction

Understanding the characteristics of hydraulic fracture, porous flow and heat transfer in fractured rock is critical for geothermal power generation applications, and numerical simulation can provide a powerful approach for systematically and thoroughly investigating these problems. In this paper, we present a fully coupled solid-fluid code using discrete element method （DEM） and lattice Boltzmann method （LBM）. The DEM with bonded particles is used to model the deformation and fracture in solid, while the LBM is used to model the fluid flow. The two methods are two-way coupled, i.e., the solid part provides a moving boundary condition and transfers momentum to fluid, while the fluid exerts a dragging force to the solid. Two widely used open source codes, the ESyS Particle and the OpenLB, are integrated into one code and paralleled with Message Passing Interface （MPI） library. Some preliminary 2D simulations, including particles moving in a fluid and hydraulic fracturing induced by injection of fluid into a borehole, are carried out to validate the integrated code. The preliminary results indicate that the new code is capable of reproducing the basic features of hydraulic fracture and thus offers a promising tool for multiscale simulation of porous flow and heat transfer in fractured rock.

Snow and regolith albedo variations using CRISM data at McMurdo crater,Mars

The cryosphere component provides the most reliable and insightful indications of any planet’s climate *** data from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars(CRISM),we develop a novel approach to determining the broadband Visible and Near Infrared(VNIR)albedo of the Martian *** study focuses on albedo changes in the McMurdo crater,part of Mars’s south polar layer *** compare seasonal and interannual variations of the McMurdo surface albedo before,during,and after the Global Dust Storm(GDS)of Martian Year(MY)*** the seasons progressed from spring to summer,the mean albedo in MY 32 and 34 plunged by over 40%,by about 35%in MY 33,and by slightly more than 30%in MY *** interannually,however,mean albedo values within both seasons(spring and summer)exhibited no significant differences in those same ***,interannual albedo difference maps reveal albedo variation of more than±0.3 in certain regions of the *** only snow-covered pixels,interannual albedo differences suggest that Mars dust had a pervasive impact on Mars’s *** in maximum and minimum albedo values as high as 0.5 were observed,depending upon differences in the dust levels in Martian snow/*** maximum and the minimum snow albedo values were lowest in MY 34,indicating the effect of the intense dust storm event that *** average snow albedo decreased from 0.45 in MY 32 to 0.40 in MY 33 and to 0.33 in MY 34,and then rose back to 0.40 in MY *** trajectory suggests a temporary deposition of dust,partially reversed after the GDS by self-cleaning mechanisms(local aeolian process and CO_(2)sublimation/deposition cycle).

Climate change induced heat stress impact on workplace productivity in a net zero-carbon timber building towards the end of the century

Changing climate intensifies heat stress,resulting in a greater risk of workplace productivity decline in timber office buildings with low internal thermal *** impact of climate change induced heat exposure on indoor workplace productivity in timber office buildings has not been extensively ***,further investigation to reduce the work capacity decline towards the end of the century is ***,heat exposure in a net zero-carbon timber building near Brussels,Belgium,was evaluated using a reproducible comparative approach with different internal thermal mass *** analysis indicated that strategies with increased thermal mass were more effective in limiting the effects of heat exposure on workplace *** medium and high thermal mass strategies reduced workplace productivity loss to 0.1%in the current,0.3%and 0.2%in the midfuture,and 4.9%and 3.9%for future *** comparison,baseline with low thermal mass yielded a decline of 2.3%,3.3%,and 8.2%.The variation in maximum and minimum wet-bulb globe temperatures were also lower for medium and high thermal mass strategies than for low thermal mass *** study findings lead to the formulation of design guidelines,identification of research gaps,and recommendations for future work.

Effect of strata properties and panel widths on chock performance

The selection of optimum chock (support) capacity is very crucial for a successful longwall mining. The selection of chock capacity depends on the site-specific geotechnical parameters, constraints and longwall panel geometry, which are generally not known in detail in priority. Hence, based on the field and laboratory data, various possible combinations should be analyzed to cater for the unforeseeable mining conditions. This paper discusses the use of numerical model for selecting an appropriate chock capacity based on the site-specific geological and geotechnical information and longwall panel geometry. The fracture mechanisms of immediate and main roofs are also discussed for various panel widths and support capacities. For the models considered, the chock convergence is predicted to increase by about 33% due to the increase in face width from 100 to 260 m. Similarly, the massive roof strata are found to yield higher chock convergence compared to bedded strata.

Efficient Finite Difference WENO Scheme for Hyperbolic Systems withNon-conservativeProducts
