On selection and scaling of gr.und motions for.analysis of seismically isolated str.ctur.s

A br.ader.consensus on the number.of gr.und motions to be used and the method of scaling to be adopted for.nonlinear.r.sponse histor. analysis （r.A） of str.ctur.s is yet to be r.ached. Ther.for., in this study, the effects of selection and scaling of gr.und motions on the r.sponse of seismically isolated str.ctur.s, which ar. r.utinely designed using nonlinear.r.A, ar. investigated. For.this pur.ose, isolation systems with a r.nge of pr.per.ies subjected to bidir.ctional excitation ar. consider.d. Benchmar. r.sponse of the isolation systems is established using lar.e sets of unscaled gr.und motions systematically categor.zed into pulse-like, non-pulse-like, and mixed set of motions. Differ.nt subsets of seven to 14 gr.und motions ar. selected fr.m these lar.e sets using （a） r.ndom selection and （b） selection based on the best match of the shape of the r.sponse spectr.m of gr.und motions to the tar.et spectr.m. Consequences of weighted scaling （also commonly r.fer.ed to as amplitude scaling or.linear.scaling） as well as spectr.l matching ar. investigated. The gr.und motion selection and scaling pr.cedur.s ar. evaluated fr.m the viewpoint of their.accur.cy, efficiency, and consistency in pr.dicting the benchmar. r.sponse. It is confir.ed that seven time histor.es ar. sufficient for.a r.liable pr.diction of isolation system displacement demands, for.all gr.und motion subsets, selection and scaling pr.cedur.s, and isolation systems consider.d. If gr.und motions ar. selected based on their.best match to the shape of the tar.et r.sponse spectr.m （which should be pr.fer.ed over.r.ndomly selected motions）, weighted scaling should be used if pulse-like motions ar. consider.d, either.of weighted scaling or.spectr.l matching can be used if non-pulse-like motions ar. consider.d, and an aver.ge of r.sponses fr.m weighted-scaled and spectr.m-matched gr.und motions should be used for.a mixed set of motions. On the other.hand, the impor.ance of r.ndomly selected motions in r.pr.sen

Liquid-solid binar. fluidized beds ar. widely used in many industr.es. However. the flow behavior.of such beds is not well under.tood due to the lack of accur.te exper.mental and numer.cal data. In the cur.ent study, the behavior.of monodisper.e and binar. liquid-solid fluidized beds of the same density but dif- fer.nt sizes is investigated using r.dioactive par.icle tr.cking （r.T） technique and a dense discr.te phase model （DDPM）. Exper.ments and simulations ar. per.or.ed in monodisper.e fluidized beds containing two differ.nt sizes of glass beads （0.6 and I mm） and a binar. fluidized bed of the same par.icles for.var.- ous bed compositions. The r.sults show that both r.T and DDPM can pr.dict the mixing and segr.gation patter. in liquid-solid binar. fluidized beds. The mean velocity pr.dictions of DDPM ar. in good agr.e- ment with the exper.mental findings for.both monodisper.e and binar. fluidized beds. However. the axial r.ot mean squar. velocity pr.dictions ar. only r.asonable for.bigger.par.icles. Par.icle-par.icle inter.c- tions ar. found to be cr.tical for.pr.dicting the flow behavior.of solids in liquid-solid binar. fluidized beds.

Micr.bial electr.synthesis(MES) can potentially pr.vide a mean for.stor.ng r.newable ener.y sur.luses as chemical ener.y. However. the fluctuating natur. of these ener.y sour.es may r.pr.sent a thr.at to MES, as the micr.bial communities that develop on the biocathode r.ly on the continuous existence of a polar.zed electr.de. This wor. assesses how MES per.or.ance, pr.duct gener.tion and micr.bial community evolution ar. affected by a long-per.od(6 weeks) power.off(open cir.uit). Acetogenic and H2-pr.ducing bacter.a activity r.cover.d after.r.connection. However. few days later.syntr.phic acetate oxidation bacter.a and H2-consuming methanogens became dominant, pr.ducing CH4 as the main pr.duct, via electr.methanogenesis and the syntr.phic inter.ction between eubacter.al and ar.haeal communities which consume both the acetic acid and the hydr.gen pr.sent in the cathode envir.nment. Thus,the system pr.ved to be r.silient to a long-ter. power.inter.uption in ter.s of electr.activity. At the same time, these r.sults demonstr.ted that the system could be extensively affected in both end pr.duct gener.tion and micr.bial communities.

Finite r.sour.es of the wor.d’s fossil fuel give r.se to the ir.esistible ur.e to explor. alter.ative r.newable ener.y r.utes such as micr.bial fuel cells（MFCs）. The limited pr.ductivity is one of the main obstacles for.MFC scalability. In this study, a dual-chamber.MFC was assembled and equipped with fabr.cated modified cathodes with titanium dioxide（TiO;） or.hybr.d gr.phene（HG） which mainly impr.ved the catalytic activity of the *** gr.phite paste（GP） bar. electr.de was modified by both nanomater.als using a gr.en and facile *** r.sults showed that the modified cathodes r.sulted in a consider.ble impr.vement for.the MFC per.or.ance,i.e., the power.density r.aching levels of 80 mW/m;for.GP-TiO;and 220 mW/m;for.GP-HG compar.d to 30 mW/m;for.GP electr.de. Assessing Anthr.pogenic Pr.ssur. and Its Impact on Hippophae salicifolia Pockets in Centr.l Himalaya,Uttar.khand

Natur.l habitat ofHippophae salicifolia in Centr.l Himalaya is continuously being degr.ded due to habitat destr.ction and har.esting. Although logging is pr.hibited, habitat destr.ction has incr.ased because of r.gular.r.ad constr.ction, r.pair.ng and br.adening activities. In addition, Hippophae r.sour.es ar. continuously being har.ested by lopping （both par.ial and complete） for.fuelwood, fodder.and fr.its in higher.Himalayan r.gion. This paper.pr.sents a detailed analysis of r.lationship between density, demogr.phic str.ctur., and har.esting of H. salicifolia gr.wing pockets in the five major.valleys （Gangotr., Yamunotr., Niti, Mana and Bhyundhar. of Uttar.khand in Centr.l Himalaya, India. A total of 12o quadr.ts wer. laid r.ndomly to study population str.ctur., r.gener.tion, sex r.tio and lopping using quadr.ts of lOO m2 （a4 in each valley） in Hippophae gr.wing patches. Our.study shows that the density, size distr.bution, and r.gener.tion of Hippophae var. consider.bly among the major.valleys. Tr.es in the Yamunotr. valley have the highest density of lar.e tr.es but the lowest density of seedlings. In contr.st, ther. ar. few lar.e tr.es but many seedlings in the Mana valley. The number.and size of lopped tr.es also var.ed among the valleys. Lopping was gr.atest in Bhyundhar.（11.4%） and Yamunotr. （19.7%） and least in Niti （3.9%）. The size of lopped tr.es differ.d substantially as well. In Bhyundhar. the lar.est tr.es wer. taken while saplings wer. taken in Yamunotr.. Our.study r.vealed that unsustainable har.esting fr.m plants for.fuel, fencing and fr.its along with r.ad br.adening activities in Centr.l Himalaya ar. the main cause ofhabitat destr.ction. Our.r.sear.h highlights the ur.ent need for.in-situ and ex-situ conser.ation of Hippophae salicifolia so that it＇s potential can be har.essed sustainably by r.r.l hill societies for.their.socio-economic development.

AIM: To evaluate the in vitr. anti-HBV activity of r.combinant human IFN-γ, alone and in combination with lamivudine. METHODS: A r.combinant baculovir.s-HBV/HepG2 cultur. system was developed which could suppor. pr.ductive HBV infection in vitr.. Expr.ssion of HBsAg and HBeAg in infected HepG2 cultur. medium was detected by commer.ial enzyme immunoassays. HBV DNA r.plication inter.ediates wer. detected in infected cells by Souther. hybr.dization and vir.l DNA load was deter.ined by dot hybr.dization. r.SULTS: IFN-γat 0.1 to 5μg/L efficiently down r.gulated HBsAg expr.ssion in tr.nsduced HepG2 cells. At 5μg/L, IFN-γalso suppr.ssed HBV DNA r.plication in these cells. While tr.atment with a combination of lamivudine and IFN-γshowed no additive effect, sequential tr.atment fir.t with lamivudine and then IFN-γwas found to be pr.mising. In this cultur. system the best HBV suppr.ssion was obser.ed with a pulse of 2μmol/L lamivudine for.two days, followed by 1μg/L IFN-γfor.another.four.days. Compar.d to tr.atment with lamivudine alone, the sequential use of 0.2μmol/L lamivudine for.two days, followed by 5μg/L IFN-γfor.six days showed a 72% r.duction in HBV cccDNA pool. CONCLUSION: This in vitr. study war.ants fur.her.evaluation of a combination of IFN-γand lamivudine, especially in IFN-αnon-r.sponder.chr.nic hepatitis B patients. A r.duced dur.tion of lamivudine tr.atment would also r.str.ct the emer.ence of dr.g-r.sistant HBV mutants.
