Finger millet porridges subjected to different processing conditions showed low glycemic index and variable efficacy on plasma antioxidant capacity of healthy adults

Finger millet porridges(FMP),rich in nutrient and non-nutrient compounds have been used in the traditional food cultures in *** aims of the study were to determine the effect of different processing conditions of finger millet grains on glycemic response,phenolic content and the antioxidant activities of FMP and to determine the short term and long term efficacy of its consumption on plasma antioxidant levels of healthy *** types of FMP were prepared combining different processing *** content of porridges as well as antioxidant activities were *** glycemic index(GI)and glycemic load(GL)values of FMP were also *** long term efficacy of FMP consumption on plasma glucose(PG),total cholesterol(TC)levels and plasma antioxidant capacity(PAC)of 18 subjects were investigated using a 24 weeks randomized cross-over *** short term efficacy of porridge consumption on AC was *** was measured by trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity(TEAC)and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power(FRAP).All FMP exhibited low GI values(<55)except the raw roasted flour which showed high and medium GI values for both particle sizes *** of finger millet grains with 15 min steaming produced FMP with low glycemic response and possessed high *** to baseline,PAC measured using FRAP and TEAC assays increased after 8 weeks consumption of porridge though significant changes were not observed for PG and TC ***,PAC was increased by 23 and 14%after 2 h of porridge consumption as measured by TEAC and FRAP,*** consumption increased the plasma total antioxidant capacity of healthy *** research on examining the potential of FMP on improving the antioxidant capacity in patients with diabetes is warranted.

Unmasking the responses of the stem cells and progenitors in the subventricular zone after neonatal and pediatric brain injuries

There is great interest in the regenerative potential of the neural stem cells and progenitors that populate the subventricular zone（SVZ）. However, a comprehensive understanding of SVZ cell responses to brain injuries has been hindered by the lack of sensitive approaches to study the cellular composition of this niche. Here we review progress being made in deciphering the cells of the SVZ gleaned from the use of a recently designed flow cytometry panel that allows SVZ cells to be parsed into multiple subsets of progenitors as well as putative stem cells. We review how this approach has begun to unmask both the heterogeneity of SVZ cells as well as the dynamic shifts in cell populations with neonatal and pediatric brain injuries. We also discuss how flow cytometric analyses also have begun to reveal how specific cytokines, such as Leukemia inhibitory factor are coordinating SVZ responses to injury.

Effect of processing on the antioxidant activities of porridges and Pittu prepared from finger millets (Eleusine coracana)

Finger millets are important coarse grains that exhibit high levels of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities among other cereals. Grains are subjected to a number of thermal treatments and this could affect the contents and bioactivities of phenolic compounds. The aim of the present study was to determine the phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of finger millet flour and foods, namely porridges and Pittu subjected to several thermal treatments such as roasting, parboiling, and parboiled roasting of flour and open boiling and steaming of foods prepared using flour. The effect of the addition of spices on phenolic content and antioxidant activities to open boiled foods was determined. Antioxidant activities of phenolic extracts obtained from finger millet flour and foods were studied for their total phenolic, flavonoids and proanthocyanidins contents, radical scavenging capacities, reducing power, ferrous ion chelating capacity, and antioxidant activity in a β-carotene/linoleate emulsion. The roasted flour and foods had higher total phenolic content (TPC) than other counterparts and ranged from 21.58 to 28.63 µmol ferulic acid equivalents/g dry matter. All flour and food preparations exhibited effective inhibition of radicals, reducing power, ferrous ion chelating activity, and antioxidant activity in the β-carotene/linoleate emulsion and the degree of activity depended on the processing conditions adopted in food *** prepared using steaming showed lower phenolic content and antioxidant activities in general than those of open-boiled counterparts. The addition of spices, namely garlic and cinnamon improved the phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of open-boiled porridges. The knowledge generated from this study may help to exploit the use of finger millets as a functional food ingredient to promote health and wellness.

Yoga: A tool for improving the quality of life in chronic pancreatitis

AIM： To determine the effectiveness of yoga on improving the quality of life in patients of chronic pancreatitis. METHODS： The patients were randomized to two groups. The control group continued their usual care as directed by their physicians. Patients in the yoga group, in addition, received biweekly yoga sessions for 12 wk. The patients＇ demographic and health behaviour variables were assessed before and alter the yoga programme using Medical Outcomes Short Form （SF-36） for quality of life, Profile of Mood States for assessing mood and Symptoms of Stress Inventory for measuring stress. RESULTS： A total of 60 patients were enrolled, with 8 *** patients were randomized to the yoga group and 30 to the control group. Significant improvements were seen in overall quality of life, symptoms of stress, mood changes, alcohol dependence and appetite alter the 12 wk period apart from the general feeling of well-being and desire to continue with the programme in future in the yoga group, while there was no difference in the control group. CONCLUSION： Yoga is effective on improving the quality of life in patients of chronic pancreatitis.

Modem information technology has been utilized progressively to store and distribute a large amount of healthcare data to reduce costs and improve medical *** this context,the emergence of e-Health clouds offers novel opportunities,like easy and remote accessibility of medical ***,this achievement produces plenty of new risks and challenges like how to provide integrity,security,and confidentiality to the highly susceptible e-Health *** these challenges,authentication is a major issue that ensures that the susceptible medical data in clouds is not available to illegal *** smart card,password and biometrics are three factors of authentication which fulfill the requirement of giving high *** three-factor ECC-based authentication protocols on e-Health clouds have been presented so ***,most of the protocols have serious security flaws and produce high computation and communication ***,we introduce a novel protocol for the e-Health cloud,which thwarts some major attacks,such as user anonymity,offline password guessing,impersonation,and stolen smart card ***,we evaluate our protocol through formal security analysis using the Random Oracle Model(ROM).The analysis shows that our proposed protocol is more efficient than many existing protocols in terms of computation and communication ***,our proposed protocol is proved to be more efficient,robust and secure.

Protective Role of C-Phycocyanin Against Secondary Changes During Sodium Selenite Mediated Cataractogenesis

Age related cataract is the leading cause of blindness associated with accumulation of oxidative stress in the eye *** present investigation reveals the rational of the beneficial effects of the natural compound C-phycocyanin(CPC)is beneficial when administered to rat pups to protect against the secondary effects of sodium selenite induced cataractogenesis.A single subcutaneous dose of sodium selenite(19 lmol/kg body weight)on the 10th day of postpartum is adequate to induce cataract in rat *** biochemical parameters,such as the level of electrolytes,mean activities of anti-oxidant enzymes *** dismutase,catalase and reduced glutathione were observed to be significantly altered during selenite induced cataractogenic *** examination revealed signs of degradation of normal cell architecture in the liver,kidney and eye ***,the deleterious effects of sodium selenite toxicity were restored with the simultaneous treatment with *** results suggest that an administration of 200 mg/kg body weight of C-PC has the ability to prevent/alter the secondary changes reflected in the serum biochemical and histological modifications in rats exposed to sodium *** results complement the beneficial role of C-PC of cyanobacterial origin as a efficacious anti-cataractogenic agent against sodium selenite toxicity.

Assessment of bactericidal role of epidermal mucus of Heteropneustes fossilis and Clarias batrachus (Asian cat fishes) against pathogenic microbial strains

This research was directed to understand the bactericidal effect of epidermal mucus of two Asian cat fish species *** batrachus and Heteropneustes *** mucus extracts(raw and diluted)of both cat fish species were tested against several Gram negative(Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Escherichia coli,Klebsiella pneumonia,***)and Gram positive bacterial strains(Bacillius cereus,Staphylococcus aureus,***)and antibacterial results were also compared with two standard antibiotics *** and chloramphenicol used as positive *** *** challenge experiment was also performed on all selected test fish species to examine the change in the amount of mucus production and its bactericidal impact..Both epidermal mucus extracts(raw and diluted)of all selected normal and bacterial challenged test objects showed potent bactericidal effect against all pathogenic bacterial strains taken under ***,former was more effective than *** raw epidermal mucus extracts of both normal and bacterial challenged cat fish species exhibited significantly higher ZOI values against all selected microbial strains than diluted mucus extracts and antibiotic ***,these outcomes have clearly revealed that this cost effective natural product acquired from fishes is the key component of their defensive ***,it could be utilized as a novel‘antimicrobial’in human as well as veterinary sector for combating against several bacterial diseases.

Evaluation of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness profile in thyroid ophthalmopathy without optic nerve dysfunction

AIM： To evaluate retinal nerve fiber layer（RNFL）thickness profile in patients of thyroid ophthalmopathy with no clinical signs of optic nerve ***： A prospective, case-control, observational study conducted at a tertiary care centre. Inclusion criteria consisted of patients with eyelid retraction in association with any one of： biochemical thyroid dysfunction, exophthalmos, or extraocular muscle involvement; or thyroid dysfunction in association with either exophthalmos or extra-ocular muscle involvement;or a clinical activity score（CAS）〉3/7. Two measurements of RNFL thickness were done for each eye, by Cirrus HD-optical coherence tomography 6mo ***： Mean age of the sample was 38.75y（range13-70y） with 18 males and 22 females. Average RNFL thickness at first visit was 92.06 ±12.44 μm, significantly lower than control group（101.28±6.64 μm）（P =0.0001）.Thickness of inferior quadrant decreased from 118.2 ±21.27 μm to 115.0 ±22.27 μm after 6mo（P =0.02）. There was no correlation between the change in CAS and RNFL thickness. CONCLUSION： Decreased RNFL thickness is an important feature of thyroid orbitopathy, which is an inherent outcome of compressive optic neuropathy of any etiology. Subclinical RNFL damage continues in the absence of clinical activity of the disease. RNFL evaluation is essential in Grave＇s disease and active intervention may be warranted in the presence of significant damage.
