Tracking invasion and invasiveness in Queensland fruit flies： From c.a.sical genetics to ＇omics＇

Three Australian tephritid fruit flies （Bactrocera tryoni - Q-fly, Bactrocera neohumeralis - NEO, and Bactrocera jarvisi - JAR） are promising models for genetic studies of pest status and invasiveness. The long history of ecological and physi- ological studies of the three species has been augmented by the development of a range of genetic.a.d genomic tools, including the capacity for forced multigeneration crosses between the three species followed by selection experiments, a draft genome for Q-fly, and tissue- and stage-specific transcriptomes. The Q-fly and NEO species pair is of particular interest. The distribution of NEO is contained entirely within the wider distribution of Q-fly and the two species are ecologically extremely similar, with no known differences in pheromones, temperature tolerance, or host-fruit utilisation. However there are three clear differences be- tween them： humeral callus colour, complete pre-mating isolation based on mating time-of-day, and invasiveness. NEO is much less invasive, whereas in historical times Q-fly has invaded southeastern Australia and areas of Western Australia and the North- em Territory. In southeastern fruit-growing regions, microsatellites suggest that some of these outbreaks might derive from ge- netically differentiated populations overwintering in or near the invaded area. Q-fly and NEO show very limited genome diffe- rentiation, so comparative genomic.a.alyses and QTL mapping should be able to identify the regions of the genome controlling mating time and invasiveness, to assess the genetic bases for the invasive strains of Q-fly, and to facilitate a variety of improve- ments to current sterile insect control strategies for that species

Effect of pneumatic compression therapy on lymph movement in lymphedema-affected extremities,as assessed by near-infrared fuorescence lymphatic imaging.

Previous studies have shown cost effectiveness and quality-of-life benefit of pneumatic compression therapy(PcT)for lymphedema(LE).Insurers,such as the centers for Medicare/Medicaid(cMS),however,desire visual proof that PcT moves *** infrared fuorescence lymphatic imaging(NIRFLI)was used to visualize lymphatic.a.atomy and function in four subjects with primary and cancer treatment-related LE of the lower extremities before,during,and after *** transparent and windowed PcT garments allowed visualization of lymph movement during single,1h PcT treatment *** revealed significant extravascular and lymphatic vascular movement of intradermally injected dye in all *** one subject with sufficient patent lymphatic vessels to allow quantification of lymph pumping velocities and frequencies,these values were significantly increased during and after PcT as compared to pre-treatment *** contractile activity in patent lymphatic vessels occurred in concert with the sequential cycling of *** visualization revealed increased lymphatic function,during and after PcT therapy,in all LE-affected *** studies are warranted to assess the effects of PcT pressure and sequences on lymph uptake and movement.

Vitamin c.a.eliorated cardiac.a.tonomic neuropathy in type 2 diabetic rats

The aim of this work was to evaluate arbuscular mycorrhizal(AM)fungi as soil indicators and the mycorrhization of native and exotic tree species planted in the Acaraúbasin,a transition area from the c.a.t to the Brazilian semiarid *** with 6-year-old trees of four native and three non-native species as well as one non-forested area were evaluated in terms of the diversity of AM fungi in the mycorrhizosphere and the root colonization by AM and ectomycorrhizal(EcM)***-four AM fungi were identified;c.a.oideoglomus etunicatum,Glomus sinuosum,Paraglomus albidum,Acaulospora laevis,and Acaulospora brasiliensis were abundant in the forest ***,dominance,evenness and richness indices of AM fungi were higher in plots with native *** root samples were colonized by AM fungi and only A nadenanthera colubrina,Acac.a.mangium,casuarina equisetifolia and Eucalyptus urophylla formed assoc.a.ions with EcM *** morphotypes served as soil indicators for coverings with the native species Astronium fraxinifolium and colubrina *** species may favor the proliferation of rarer AM *** fungi–plant relationships may be important in the management of forest systems,and the evidence with mycorrhizal assoc.a.ions allows the inclusion of Brazilian species in tropical reforestation.

Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia and pneumomediastinum in an anti-TNFαnaive patient with ulcerative colitis

We report the case of a 21-year-old man who was noted to have pneumomediastinum during an admission for an acute flare of ulcerative colitis. At that time, he was on maintenance treatment with azathioprine at a dose of 2.25 mg/kg per day, and had not received supplementary steroids for 9 mo. He had never received anti-tumor necrosis factor （TNF）α therapy. Shortly after apparently effective treatment with intravenous steroids and an increased dose of azathioprine, he developed worsening colitic.a.d new respiratory symptoms, and was diagnosed with Pneumocystis jiroveci （carinii） pneumonia （PcP）. Pneumomediastinum is rare in immunocompetent hosts, but is a recognized complication of PcP in human immunodeficiency virus （HIV） patients, although our patient＇s HIV test was negative. Treatment of PcP with co-trimoxazole resulted in resolution of both respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms, without the need to increase the steroid dose. There is increasing vigilance for opportunistic infections in patients with inflammatory bowel disease following the advent of anti-TNFα therapy. This case emphasizes the importance of considering the possibility of such infections in all patients with inflammatory bowel disease, irrespective of the immunosuppressants they receive, and highlights the potential of steroid-responsive opportunistic infections to mimic worsening colitic symptoms in patients with ulcerative colitis.

History and conservation of wild and cultivated plant diversity in Uganda： forest species and banana varieties as case studies

The history of wild and cultivated plant diversity in Uganda is reviewed,taking forest species and bananas as examples. Palynological research into past human influences on forests is reassessed. The evidence suggests that crops were first introduced into the country at about 1,000 BcE,farming communities practicing slash and burn agriculture started to significantly influence the floristic composition of forests during the 1st millennium BcE and there was a major episode of forest reduction at about 1,000 cE related to socio-economic c.a.ge. Bananas were probably introduced in the early centuries cE. The colonial era from 1894 saw the introduction of new concepts of land ownership and the establishment of forest reserves and agricultural stations. Forests and banana diversity are currently under threat,Uganda having a very high rate of deforestation and endemic banana varieties proving susceptible to introduced pests and diseases. It is suggested that,under these circumstances,conservationists take an opportunistic.a.proach to field engagement,making use of favourable local conditions as they arise. Partnerships should be sought with elements of society concerned with sustainable use,provision of ecosystem services and cultural survival to widen the soc.a. base of plant conservation. International organisations involved in conservation of plant genetic resources and wild plant species should collaborate with one another to develop the conceptual basis of plant conservation,to make it more relevant to countries like Uganda.

Exploratory study of possible resonances in heavy meson-heavy baryon coupled-c.a.nel interactions

We use a unitary coupled-c.a.nel model to study the DAc-D∑c interactions. In our calculation, SU（3）flavor symmetry is applied to determine the coupling constants. Several resonant and bound states with different spin and parity are dynamically generated in the mass range of the recently observed pentaquarks. The approach is also extended to the hidden beauty sector to study the BΛb-B∑b interactions. As the b-quark mass is heavier than the c-quark mass, there are more resonances observed for the BΛb-B∑b interactions and they are more tightly bound.

SOPHIE: Generative Neural Networks Separate common and Specific Transcriptional Responses
