BACKGROUnD The impact of the coronavirus on hospitalizations for gastrointestinal(GI)disease,particularly at a population level is *** To investigate trends in hospitalizations,inpatient endoscopy resource utilization,and outcomes during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent *** Using the California State Inpatient Database for 2018-2020,we explored year-toyear and 2020 month-to-month trends in hospitalizations,length of stay,and inpatient mortality(all-cause&viral pneumonia-specific)for common inpatient GI diagnoses including acute pancreatitis,diverticulitis,cholelithiasis,noninfectious gastroenteritis,upper and lower GI bleeding(LGIB),Clostridium difficile,viral gastroenteritis,inflammatory bowel disease,and acute *** Disease-specific hospitalizations decreased for all included conditions except nonvariceal upper GI bleeding(nVUGIB),LGIB,and ulcerative colitis(UC)(ptrendnpatient mortality was higher in 2020 vs 2019,for acute pancreatitis(P=0.029),diverticulitis(P=0.04),nVUGIB(P=0.003),and Crohn’s disease(P=0.004).In 2020,hospitalization rates were lowest in April,november,and *** was no significant corresponding increase in inpatient mortality except in UC(ptrend=0.048).Viral pneumonia and viral pneumonia complicated by respiratory failure increased(Png GI *** utilization within 24 h of admission was unchanged for GI emergencies except nVUGIB(PnCLUSIOn Our findings suggest that hospitalization rates for common GI conditions significantly declined in California during the COVID pandemic,particularly in April,november and December *** mortality was significantly higher among acute pancreatitis,diverticulitis,nVUGIB,and Crohn’s disease *** endoscopy rates were mostly comparable between 2020 and 2019.

The ever-growing human population,coupled with the exigent need to meet the increasing demand for poultry meat and egg,has put the onus on poultry nutritionists and farmers to identify alternative feed ingredients that could assure the least-cost feed *** addition,the public desire for nonantibiotic-treated poultry products has also necessitated the ultimate search for potent antibiotic alternatives for use in poultry *** some identified alternatives are promising,their cost implications and technical know-how requirements may discourage their ease of adoption in *** use of plants and/or their by-products,like fruit pomaces,present a pocket-friendly advantage and as a result,are gaining much *** is traceable to their rich phytochemical profile,nutritional composition,ready availability,and relatively cheap *** fruit juice and wine pressing industries generate a plethora of fruit wastes ***,fruit pomaces contain appreciable dietary fibre,protein,and phenolic compounds,and thus,their adoption could serve the poultry industry in dual capacities including as substitutes to antibiotics and some conventional ***,there is a possibility to reduce fruit wastes produced and feed-cost in poultry farming from environmental and economical standpoints,*** review seeks to provide reinforcing evidence on the applicability and impact of fruit pomaces in poultry nutrition.

The nitrate-nitrogen（nO 3-n） concentrations from shallow groundwater wells situated in 29 of the Chinese Ecosystem Research network field stations,representing typical agroand forest ecosystems,were assessed using monitoring data collected between 2004 and *** from this assessment permit a national scale assessment of nitrate concentrations in shallow groundwater,and allow linkages between nitrate concentrations in groundwater and broad land use categories to be *** indicated that most of the nO 3--n concentrations in groundwater from the agroand forest ecosystems were below the Class 3 drinking water standard stated in the Chinese national Standard：Quality Standard for Ground Water（≤ 20 mg/L）.Over the study period,the average nO 3--n concentrations were significantly higher in agro-ecosystems（4.1 ± 0.33 mg/L） than in forest ecosystems（0.5 ± 0.04 mg/L）.nO 3-n concentrations were relatively higher（〉 10 mg n /L） in 10 of the 43 wells sampled in the agricultural *** elevated concentrations occurred mainly in the Ansai,Yucheng,Linze,Fukang,Akesu,and Cele field sites,which were located in arid and semiarid areas where irrigation rates are *** suggest that improvements in n fertilizer application and irrigation management practices in the arid and semi-arid agricultural ecosystems of China are the key to managing groundwater nitrate concentrations.

Spondylocarpotarsal syndrome(SCT) is a rare musculoskeletal disorder characterized by short stature and vertebral, carpal, and tarsal fusions resulting from biallelic nonsense mutations in the gene encoding filamin B(FLnB). Utilizing a FLnB knockout mouse,we showed that the vertebral fusions in SCT evolved from intervertebral disc(IVD) degeneration and ossification of the annulus fibrosus(AF), eventually leading to full trabecular bone formation. This resulted from alterations in the TGFβ/BMP signaling pathway that included increased canonical TGFβ and noncanonical BMP signaling. In this study, the role of FLnB in the TGFβ/BMP pathway was elucidated using in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo treatment methodologies. The data demonstrated that FLnB interacts with inhibitory Smads 6 and 7(i-Smads) to regulate TGFβ/BMP signaling and that loss of FLnB produces increased TGFβ receptor activity and decreased Smad 1 ubiquitination. Through the use of small molecule inhibitors in an ex vivo spine model, TGFβ/BMP signaling was modulated to design a targeted treatment for SCT and disc degeneration. Inhibition of canonical and noncanonical TGFβ/BMP pathway activity restored Flnb-/-IVD morphology. These most effective improvements resulted from specific inhibition of TGFβand p38 signaling activation. FLnB acts as a bridge for TGFβ/BMP signaling crosstalk through i-Smads and is key for the critical balance in TGFβ/BMP signaling that maintains the IVD. These findings further our understanding of IVD biology and reveal new molecular targets for disc degeneration as well as congenital vertebral fusion disorders.
