Oral mucosal and salivary lipids exhibit potent antimicrobial activity for a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria;however,little is known about their spectrum of antimicrobial activity or mechanisms of action against oral *** this study,we examine the activity of two fatty acids and three sphingoid bases against Porphyromonas gingivalis,an important colonizer of the oral cavity implicated in *** inhibitory concentrations,minimal bactericidal concentrations,and kill kinetics revealed variable,but potent,activity of oral mucosal and salivary lipids against ***,indicating that lipid structure may be an important determinant in lipid mechanisms of activity against bacteria,although specific components of bacterial membranes are also likely *** micrographs showed ultrastructural damage induced by sapienic acid and phytosphingosine and confirmed disruption of the bacterial plasma *** information,coupled with the association of treatment lipids with *** lipids revealed via thin layer chromatography,suggests that the plasma membrane is a likely target of lipid antibacterial *** a combination of two-dimensional in-gel electrophoresis and Western blot followed by mass spectroscopy and N-terminus degradation sequencing we also show that treatment with sapienic acid induces upregulation of a set of proteins comprising a unique *** stress response,including proteins important in fatty acid biosynthesis,metabolism and energy production,protein processing,cell adhesion and *** or therapeutic lipid treatments may be beneficial for intervention of infection by supplementing the natural immune function of endogenous lipids on mucosal surfaces.

A randomized,fellow eye,comparison of keratometry,aberrometry,tear film,axial length and the anterior chamber depth after eye rubbing in non-keratoconic eyes

Background:To investigate the effect of eye rubbing on keratometry(K),aberrometry,tear film break-up-time(TFBUT)and anterior chamber depth(ACD).Methods:volunteers without any corneal pathology or dry eyes were randomised to rubbing in one eye and the fellow-eye was *** rubbing was performed for 2 *** outcomes studied were anterior and posterior K *** outcomes were changes in TFBUT,axial length(AL)&ACD,K changes in various zones,asphericity and *** and post rubbing K,aberrometry,ACD and TFBUT were assessed in a predetermined *** relationship of the above parameters to axial length(AL)was also *** was analysed using vector ***:Pre versus post rubbing,anterior flatter K further flattened(42.51±1.52 D vs.42.36±1.53 D,p=0.003)and the changes to J0 vector in central cornea(−0.16±0.26 D vs.-0.27±0.33 D,p=0.038)suggested change to against-the-rule(ATR)*** was significant change in Z^(+2)_(2) polynomial following *** found a positive correlation between axial length and change in posterior K(r=0.335,p=0.020).The TFBUT reduced following eye rubbing(15.3 s vs.13.9 s,p=0.0001).There was a positive correlation between AL and increase in ACD post rubbing(r=0.300,p=0.038).There was a positive correlation between ACD and change in mean posterior K(r=0.305,p=0.035).Conclusions:In healthy eyes,following eye rubbing,there is a significant change in TFBUT and central anterior K changes towards ATR *** eyes had more changes in posterior K and ***,eyes with deeper ACD showed more steepness of posterior K.

vitamin C ameliorated cardiac autonomic neuropathy in type 2 diabetic rats

Direct LED writing of submicron resist patterns： Towards the fabrication of individually-addressable InGaN sub-micron stripe-shaped LED arrays

Submicron stripe-shaped InGaN light-emitting diode （LED） arrays with individually addressable capabilities are demonstrated. The critical submicron- stripe metallic electrodes, which define the emission pattern, are formed by direct LED writing in a mask-free manner. The individually addressable submicron-stripe LEDs show excellent performance in terms of their electrical characteristics （with typical turn-on voltage of 3 v, operational stability and power output up to 28 ~W at 3 mA）. Unlike conventional broad-sized LEDs, the efficiency droop of the submicron-stripe LED is significantly suppressed--in fact, there is no efficiency droop for current densities up to 100 A/cm^2. Furthermore, the submicron-stripe LED shows a lower temperature-dependent shift of the emission wavelength. The lateral emission width is increased with increasing injection current, resulting in a wider lateral emission size than the metallic submicron-stripe electrode. The underlying physics of these phenomena are analysed. Such submicron-stripe LED arrays open up promising applications in nanophotonics and bio-sensing.

Sequencing of treatment in metastatic colorectal cancer:Where to fit the target?

Colorectal cancer is a lethal disease if not discovered *** though appropriate screening and preventive strategies are in place in many countries,a significant number of patients are still diagnosed at late stages of the *** management of metastatic colorectal cancer remains a significant clinical challenge to oncologists *** cytotoxic regimens constitute the main treatment of choice in this patient population,addition of the five biologics(bevacizumab,cetuximab,aflibercept,panitumumab and regorafenib)to these regimens has improved clinical *** most commonly used cytotoxic regimens include doublet combinations(FOLFOX/XELOX or FOLFIRI).Many clinical trials have been published and others are underway to compare the biologic agents with one another in order to prove the superiority of one regimen over *** colorectal cancer patients have many treatment options;however,the optimal use and sequence of targeted agents remain to be *** review entails concise and updated clinical data on the management of metastatic colorectal *** aim of the review is to determine where to fit the five biologic targets into the treatment algorithm of metastatic colorectal cancer patients and to derive treatment sequences that would achieve best clinical outcome based on the current available data.

Cloning and expression of SLC10A4,a putative organic anion transport protein

AIM: To determine if novel bile acid transporters may be expressed in human tissues. METHODS: SLC10A1 (NTCP) was used as a probe to search the NCBI database for homology to previously uncharacterized ESTs. The homology search identified an EST (termed SLC10A4) that shares sequence identity with SLC10A1 and SLC10A2 (ASBT). We performed Northern blot analysis and RT-PCR to determine the tissue distribution of SLC10A4. SLC10A4 was cloned in frame with an epitope tag and overexpressed in CHO cells to determine cellular localization and functional analysis of bile acid uptake. RESULTS: Northern analysis revealed that SLC10A4 mRNA is ubiquitously expressed in human tissues with the highest levels of mRNA expression in brain, placenta, and liver. In SLC10A4-transfected CHO cells, immunoblotting analysis and immunofluorescence staining demonstrated a 49-kDa protein that is expressed at the plasma membrane and intracellular compartments. Functional analysis of SLC10A4 showed no significant taurocholate uptake in the presence of sodium when compared to untransfected CHO cells. CONCLUSION: To date, we have shown that this protein has no capacity to transport taurocholate relative to SLC10A1; however, given its ubiquitous tissue distribution, it may play a more active role in transporting other endogenous organic anions.

As surgical techniques continue to move towards less invasive techniques,single incision laparoscopic surgery(SILS),a hybrid between traditional multiport laparoscopy and natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery,was introduced to further the enhanced outcomes of multiport laparoscopy. The safety and feasibility of SILS for both benign and malignant colorectal disease has been proven. SILS provides the potential for improved cosmesis,postoperative pain,recovery time,and quality of life at the drawback of higher technical skill required. In this article,we review the history,describe the available technology and techniques,and evaluate the benefits and limitations of SILS for colorectal surgery in the published literature.
