Interrelationship of soil moisture and temperature to sylvatic plague cycle among prairie dogs in the Western United States

Plague,caused by Yersinia pestis,is a flea-borne disease that is endemic in areas throughout the world due to its successful maintenance in a sylvatic cycle,mainly in areas with temperate climates.Burrowing rodents are thought to play a key role in the enzootic maintenance as well as epizootic outbreaks of plague.In the United States,prairie dogs(Cynomys),rodents(Muridae),and ground squirrels(Spermophilus)are susceptible to infection and are parasitized by fleas that transmit plague.In particular,prairie dogs can experience outbreaks that rapidly spread,which can lead to extirpation of colonies.A number of ecological parameters,including climate,are associated with these epizootics.In this study,we asked whether soil parameters,primarily moisture and temperature,are associated with outbreaks of plague in black-tailed prairie dogs and Gunnison’s prairie dogs in the Western United States,and at what depth these associations were apparent.We collected publicly available county-level information on the occurrence of population declines or colony extirpation,while historical soil data was collected from SCAN and USCRN stations in counties and states where prairie dogs have been located.The analysis suggests that soil moisture at lower depths correlates with colony die-offs,in addition to temperature near the surface,with key differences within the landscape ecology that impact the occurrence of plague.Overall,the model suggests that the burrow environment may play a significant role in the epizootic spread of disease amongst black-tailed and Gunnison’s prairie dogs.

A Theoretically Grounded Question Answering Data Set for Evaluating Machine Common Sense

Achieving machine common sense has been a longstanding problem within Artificial Intelligence.Thus far,benchmark data sets that are grounded in a theory of common sense and can be used to conduct rigorous,semantic evaluations of common sense reasoning(CSR)systems have been lacking.One expectation of the AI community is that neuro-symbolic reasoners can help bridge this gap towards more dependable systems with common sense.We propose a novel benchmark,called Theoretically Grounded common sense Reasoning(TG-CSR),modeled as a set of question answering instances,with each instance grounded in a semantic category of common sense,such as space,time,and emotions.The benchmark is few-shot i.e.,only a few training and validation examples are provided in the public release to avoid the possibility of overfitting.Results from recent evaluations suggest that TG-CSR is challenging even for state-of-the-art statistical models.Due to its semantic rigor,this benchmark can be used to evaluate the common sense reasoning capabilities of neuro-symbolic systems.

A systematic scoping review of study methodology for randomized controlled trials investigating probiotics in athletic and physically active populations

Background:The purported ergogenic and health effects of probiotics have been a topic of great intrigue among researchers,practitioners,and the lay public alike.There has also been an increased research focus within the realm of sports science and exercise medicine on the athletic gut microbiota.However,compared to other ergogenic aids and dietary supplements,probiotics present unique study challenges.The objectives of this systematic scoping review were to identify and characterize study methodologies of randomized controlled trials investigating supplementation with probiotics in athletes and physically active individuals.Methods:Four databases(MEDlINE,CINAHl,Cochrane CENTRAl,and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews)were searched for randomized controlled studies involving healthy athletes or physically active individuals.An intervention with probiotics and inclusion of a control and/or placebo group were essential.Only peer-reviewed articles in English were considered,and there were no date restrictions.Results were extracted and presented in tabular form to detail study protocols,characteristics,and outcomes.Bias in randomized controlled trials was determined with the RoB 2.0 tool.Results:A total of 45 studies were included in the review,with 35 using a parallel group design and 10 using a cross-over design.Approximately half the studies used a single probiotic and the other half a multi-strain preparation.The probiotic dose ranged from 2×10^(8)to 1×10^(11)colony forming units daily,and the length of intervention was between 7 and 150 days.Fewer than half the studies directly assessed gastrointestinal symptoms,gut permeability,or the gut microbiota.The sex ratio of participants was heavily weighted toward males,and only 3 studies exclusively investigated females.low-level adverse events were reported in only 2 studies,although the methodology of reporting varied widely.The risk of bias was generally low,although details on randomization were lacking in some studies.Conclusion:There is a substantial body of

Diurnal feeding as a potential mechanism of osmoregulation in aphids

Diurnal variation in phloem sap composition has a strong infuence on aphid performance.The sugar-rich phloem sap serves as the sole diet for aphids and a suite of physiological mechanisms and behaviors allowv them to tolerate the high osmotic stress.Here,we tested the hypothesis that night-time feeding by aphids is a behavior that takes advantage of the low sugar diet in the night to compensate for osmotic stress incurred while feeding on high sugar diet during the day.Using the electrical penetration graph(EPG)technique.we examined the eiects of diurmal rhythm on feeding behaviors of bird cherry-oat aphid(Rhopalosiphurm padi l.)on wheat.A strong diurmal rhythm in aphids as indicated by the presence of a cyclical pattern of expression in a core clock gene did not impact aphid feeding and similar feeding behaviors were observed during day and night.The major difference observed between day and night feeding was that aphids spent significantly longer time in phloem salivation during the night compared to the day.In contrast,aphid hydration was reduced at the end of the day-time feeding compared to end of the night-time fepding.Gene expression analysis of R.padi osmoregulatory genes indicated that sugar break down and water transport into the aphid gut was reduced at night.These data suggest that while diumal variation occurs in phloem sap composition,aphids use night time feeding to overcome the high osmotic stress incurred while feeding on sugar-rich phloem sap during the day.

As the human population increases globally,the food animal industry has not been spared from the monumental demand for edible animal products,particularly meat.This has necessitated the simulta-neous expansion of the productivity of the animal sector to meet the ever-growing human needs.Although antibiotics have been used in food animal production with commendable positive impacts on their growth performance,their sole contributive factor to the increasing incidence of antimicrobial resistance has ushered the strict restrictions placed on their use in the animal sector.This has handed a setback to both animals and farmers;thus,the intense push for a more sustainable antibiotic alternative for use in animal production.The use of plants with concentrated phytogenic compounds has gained much interest due to their beneficial bioactivities,including antioxidant and selective antimicrobial.While the reported beneficial activities of phytogenic additives on animals vary due to their varying total polyphenol concentrations(TPC),red osier dogwood(ROD)plant materials boast of high TPC with excellent antioxidant prowess and growth improvement capacities compared to some plant extracts commonly used in research.However,its adoption in research and commercial scale is still low.Thus,the present review aims to provide concise information on the dietary potential of ROD plant materials in animal feeding.

Objective:Globally 37.9 million people are living with HIV/AIDS,and with mortality rates declining,there is an increasing focus on comorbidities including musculoskeletal(MSK)disorders.Therefore,the aim of this scoping review was to generate and summarize an overview of the existing scientific literature dealing with MSK complaints in people living with HIV/AIDS(PlWHAs).Methods:This scoping review followed the five-stage methodological framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley.

SOPHIE: Generative Neural Networks Separate Common and Specific Transcriptional Responses

Genome-wide transcriptome profiling identifies genes that are prone to differential expression(DE)across contexts,as well as genes with changes specific to the experimental manipulation.Distinguishing genes that are specifically changed in a context of interest from common differentially expressed genes(DEGs)allows more efficient prediction of which genes are specific to a given biological process under scrutiny.Currently,common DEGs or pathways can only be identified through the laborious manual curation of experiments,an inordinately time-consuming endeavor.Here we pioneer an approach,Specific cOntext Pattern Highlighting In Expression data(SOPHIE),for distinguishing between common and specific transcriptional patterns using a generative neural network to create a background set of experiments from which a null distribution of gene and pathway changes can be generated.We apply SOPHIE to diverse datasets including those from human,human cancer,and bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa.SOPHIE identifies common DEGs in concordance with previously described,manually and systematically determined common DEGs.Further molecular validation indicates that SOPHIE detects highly specific but low-magnitude biologically relevant transcriptional changes.SOPHIE’s measure of specificity can complement log2 fold change values generated from traditional DE analyses.For example,by filtering the set of DEGs,one can identify genes that are specifically relevant to the experimental condition of interest.Consequently,these results can inform future research directions.All scripts used in these analyses are available at https://***/greenelab/generic-expression-patterns.Users can access https://***/greenelab/sophie to run SOPHIE on their own data.

Bioaccumulation of toxic hydrophobic organic compounds at the primary trophic level

The prevailing hypothesis, which states that the uptake of HOCs by phytoplankton is controlled by the compound's lipophilicity (Kow) was tested. The approach taken was to determine the factors that controlled the uptake of PCBs by phytoplankton under controlled laboratory conditions, and to develop a model that would describe bioaccumulation of PCBs in phytoplankton.The results demonstrate a relationship of BAF to Kow and to phytoplankton surface properties, as well as the data presented here, support the hypothesis that the mechanism of HOC uptake is a rapid surface sorption followed by a slower transfer into lipids in the cell matrix. The work on the kinetics of uptake indicates that equilibrium is reached slowly and that the rate of uptake is of similar magnitude as phytoplankton growth under normal field conditions.Thus a critical factor that controls the bioaccumulation of HOCs reach equilibrium in phytoplankton itself.

Trends in gastrointestinal disease hospitalizations and outcomes during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic

BACKGROUND The impact of the coronavirus on hospitalizations for gastrointestinal(GI)disease,particularly at a population level is understudied.AIM To investigate trends in hospitalizations,inpatient endoscopy resource utilization,and outcomes during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.METHODS Using the California State Inpatient Database for 2018-2020,we explored year-toyear and 2020 month-to-month trends in hospitalizations,length of stay,and inpatient mortality(all-cause&viral pneumonia-specific)for common inpatient GI diagnoses including acute pancreatitis,diverticulitis,cholelithiasis,noninfectious gastroenteritis,upper and lower GI bleeding(lGIB),Clostridium difficile,viral gastroenteritis,inflammatory bowel disease,and acute cholangitis.RESUlTS Disease-specific hospitalizations decreased for all included conditions except nonvariceal upper GI bleeding(NVUGIB),lGIB,and ulcerative colitis(UC)(ptrendllcause inpatient mortality was higher in 2020 vs 2019,for acute pancreatitis(P=0.029),diverticulitis(P=0.04),NVUGIB(P=0.003),and Crohn’s disease(P=0.004).In 2020,hospitalization rates were lowest in April,November,and December.There was no significant corresponding increase in inpatient mortality except in UC(ptrend=0.048).Viral pneumonia and viral pneumonia complicated by respiratory failure increased(Plizations.Endoscopy utilization within 24 h of admission was unchanged for GI emergencies except NVUGIB(PlUSION Our findings suggest that hospitalization rates for common GI conditions significantly declined in California during the COVID pandemic,particularly in April,November and December 2020.Allcause mortality was significantly higher among acute pancreatitis,diverticulitis,NVUGIB,and Crohn’s disease hospitalizations.Emergency endoscopy rates were mostly comparable between 2020 and 2019.
