The Effects of Low Intensity Endurance Activity on Various Physiological Parameters and Exercise Induced Oxidative Stress in Dogs

The study of canine athlete physiology has focused on endurance sled dog racing and high intensity short duration Greyhound racing, yet the number of dogs competing in low intensity endurance activities is rising due to the increased numbers of hunting and companion dog activities. There is little information on the physiological effect of longer duration low intensity endurance activities. We set out to evaluate the serum biochemistry, oxidative stress, and cortisol response before and after two consecutive days of exercise in ten healthy unconditioned male dogs. Exercise sessions consisted of 120 minutes on an exercise wheel at 11 km/hour on 2 consecutive days. Blood was collected at four time points: 24 hours pre-exercise (sample 1, Day 0, resting);2 min post-exercise on days 1 and 2, (samples 2 and 3, respectively);and 20 hours post-exercise, collected on day 3(sample 4). Hematocrit, blood gases, serum chemistry, uric acid, cortisol, and F2-isoprostanes were determined. Serum biochemistry and hematocrit suggested hemoconcentration, mild muscle damage and respiratory alkalosis during exercise, which was expected in the unconditioned canine athlete. In addition, plasma indices of oxidative damage (F2-isoprostanes) increased, as did plasma uric acid (an endogenous antioxidant). Importantly, similar to human studies, plasma F2-isoprostanes decreased 24 hours after exercise suggesting a protective effect of exercise. Serum cortisol concentrations were also markedly elevated at the end of exercise on both days suggesting that timing of sampling may play a role in interpreting cortisol results when looking at previous field studies.

Okara as a protein supplement affects feed intake and milk composition of ewes and growth performance of lambs

Evaluating the feeding value of wet okara as a protein supplement for lactating ewes with twin lambs was the obj.ctive. A 4 x 4 Latin square replicated 2 x(4 sheep, 4 treatments, 4 periods per square; 2 squares) was conducted to examine the influence of concentrate mix(okara or not) and type of forage(silage or hay) on ewe milk composition and growth of their lactating lambs. Treatment periods were 14 days(7 days adaptation and 7 days collection). Ewes(55 to 74.8 kg BW) were fed 1 of 4 diets: wheat middling and corn concentrate with mixed grass hay(TSH), okara and corn with mixed grass hay(OSH),soybean and wheat middlings with hay crop silage(TSS), and okara and corn with hay crop silage(OSS).Ewes fed hay diets had lower forage dry matter intakes than ewes fed silage. Intake of okara supplement was higher(P < 0.05) with OSH(3.64 kg/d) than with OSS(1.70 kg/d). There was no difference in supplement intake between TSH and TSS. There were no differences among diets for lamb daily gains or in ewe milk compositions among the diets. Okara is an effective source of protein for lactating ewes and their twin lambs.

There has long been a controversy whether forbidden points truly exist, or if they have any bearing in contemporary practice. This study used literature review synthesis method to examine the application of acupuncture at the "forbidden points" for low back pain and pelvic pain in pregnancy. This study addresses the potential implications of needling the forbidden points during pregnancy.

We have examined ten human subj.cts with a previously developed instrument for near-infrared diffuse spectral imaging of the female *** instrument is based on a tandem,planar scan of two collinear optical fibers(one for illumination and one for collection)to image a gently compressed breast in a transmission *** optical data collection features a spatial sampling of 25 points/cm2 over the whole breast,and a spectral sampling of 2 points/nm in the 650-900nm wavelength *** the ten human subj.cts examined,eight are healthy subj.cts and two are cancer patients with unilateral invasive ductal carcinoma and ductal carcinoma in situ,*** each subj.ct,we generate second-derivative images that identify a network of highly absorbing structures in the breast that we assign to blood vessels.A previously developed paired-wavelength spectral method assigns oxygenation values to the absorbing structures displayed in the second-derivative *** resulting oxygenation images feature average values over the whole breast that are significantly lower in cancerous breasts(69±14%,n=2)than in healthy breasts(85±7%,n=18)(p<0.01).Furthermore,in the two patients with breast cancer,the average oxygenation values in the cancerous regions are also significantly lower than in the remainder of the breast(invasive ductal carcinoma:49±11%vs 61±16%,p<0.01;ductal carcinoma in situ:58±8%vs 77±11%,p<0.001).

Hydrogen is considered an attractive alternative to fossil fuels,but only a small amount of it is produced from renewable energy,making it not such a clean energy carrier after *** hydrogen through water electrolysis is promising,but using a cost-effective and high-performing catalyst that has longterm stability is still a *** study exploits,for the first time,the potential of zinc oxide nanoparticles with diverse morphologies as catalysts for the electrocatalytic production of hydrogen from *** morphology of the nanoparticles(wires,cuboids,spheres)was easily regulated by changing the concentration of sodium hydroxide,used as the shape controlling agent,during the *** spherical morphology exhibited the highest electrocatalytic activity at the lowest potential *** spherical nanoparticles had the highest number of oxygen vacancies and lowest particle size compared to the other two morphologies,features directly linked to high catalytic ***,the nanowires were much more stable with repeated ***-functional theory showed that the presence of oxygen vacancies in all three morphologies led to diminished band gaps,which is of catalytic interest.

Accommodating the bacterial decoding release factor as an alien protein among the RNAs at the active site of the ribosome

The decoding release factor (RF) triggers termination of protein synthesis by functionally mimicking a tRNA to spanthe decoding centre and the peptidyl transferase centre (PTC) of the ribosome. Structurally, it must fit into a site craftedfor a tRNA and surrounded by five other RNAs, namely the adj.cent peptidyl tRNA carrying the completed polypeptide,the mRNA and the three rRNAs. This is achieved by extending a structural domain from the body of the protein thatresults in a critical conformational change allowing it to contact the PTC. A structural model of the bacterial terminationcomplex with the accommodated RF shows that it makes close contact with the first, second and third bases of the stopcodon in the mRNA with two separate loops of structure: the anticodon loop and the loop at the tip of helix α5. Theanticodon loop also makes contact with the base following the stop codon that is known to strongly influence termina-tion efficiency. It confirms the close contact of domain 3 of the protein with the key RNA structures of the PTC. ThemRNA signal for termination includes sequences upstream as well as downstream of the stop codon, and this may reflectstructural restrictions for specific combinations of tRNA and RF to be bound onto the ribosome together. An unbiasedSELEX approach has been investigated as a tool to identify potential rRNA-binding contacts of the bacterial RF in itsdifferent binding conformations within the active centre of the ribosome.

Effect of a novel dietary supplement on pH levels of healthy volunteers:a pilot study

OBj.CTIVE： To examine the effects of a greens alkalizing dietary supplement on urinary pH levels in individuals with lower-than-average pH levels. METHODS： The present study investigated the effects of an alkalizing formula （Reserveage Wholeganic GreensTM） on four individuals who had average urinary pH levels below 6.0 for three consecutive days. Following the three-day, baseline period, participants received Reserveage Wholeganic GreensTM for four consecutive days and were instructed to continue to measure their urine pH levels. Paired samples t-tests were used to examine pH levels before and after a four-day treatment period with Reserveage Wholeganic GreensTM. RESULTS： Compared to baseline, mean urine pH levels in all volunteers were significantly higher following the supplementation with Reserveage Wholeganic GreensTM （5.89 ±0.20 vs 5.56 ± 0.23; P〈0.01）. Participants＇ pH levels were also significantly higher than baseline on days 5, 6, and 7 of the treatment period （P 〈 0.05）. Noteworthy, on day 7, participants＇ mean pH levels were significantly higher than at the beginning of the treatment period （6.03 ± 0.15 at day 7 vs 5.65 ± 0.24 at day 4; P 〈 0.01）. CONCLUSION： The findings of this study suggest that supplementation with Reserveage Wholeganic GreensTM has an alkalizing effect on the body and can increase the urine pH levels in individuals with lower-than-average pH levels.

Pathophysiology of cerebral oedema in acute liver failure

Cerebral oedema is a devastating consequence of acute liver failure(ALF)and may be associated with the development of intracranial hypertension and *** ALF,some patients may develop cerebral oedema and increased intracranial pressure but progression to lifethreatening intracranial hypertension is less frequent than previously described,complicating less than one third of cases who have proceeded to coma since the advent of improved clinical *** rapid onset of encephalopathy may be dramatic with the development of asterixis,delirium,seizures and *** and vasogenic oedema mechanisms have been implicated with a preponderance of experimental data favouring a cytotoxic *** swelling is the most consistent neuropathological finding in humans with ALF and ammonia plays a definitive role in the development of cytotoxic brain *** mechanism(s)by which ammonia induces astrocyte swelling remains unclear but glutamine accumulation within astrocytes has led to the osmolyte *** evidence also supports an alternate‘Troj.n horse’hypothesis,with glutamine as a carrier of ammonia into mitochondria,where its accumulation results in oxidative stress,energy failure and ultimately astrocyte *** a complete breakdown of the blood-brain barrier is not evident in human ALF,increased permeation to water and other small molecules such as ammonia has been demonstrated resulting from subtle alterations in the protein composition of paracellular tight *** present,there is no fully efficacious therapy for cerebral oedema other than liver transplantation and this reflects our incomplete knowledge of the precise mechanisms underlying this process which remain largely unknown.
