A phylogenetic approach identifies patterns of beta diversity and floristic subregions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Patterns of taxonomic and phylogenetic beta diversity and their relationships with environmental correlates can help reveal the origin and evolutionary history of regional *** Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP)harbors an exceptionally diverse flora,however,a phylogenetic perspective has rarely been used to investigate its beta diversity and floristic *** this study,we used a phylogenetic approach to identify patterns of beta diversity and quantitatively delimit floristic regions on the Qinghai-Tibet *** also examined the relationships between multifaceted beta diversity,geographical distance,and climatic difference,and evaluated the relative importance of various factors(i.e.,climate,topography and history)in shaping patterns of beta diversity.Sørensen dissimilarity indices indicated that patterns of species turnover among sites dominated the *** also found that patterns of both taxonomic and phylogenetic beta diversity were significantly related to geographical distance and climatic *** environmental factors that contributed most to these patterns of beta diversity include annual precipitation,mean annual temperature,climatic gradients and climatic *** dendrograms of dissimilarity and non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination based on phylogenetic beta diversity data identified ten floristic subregions in the *** results suggest that the contemporary environment and historical climate changes have filtered species composition among sites and eventually determined beta diversity patterns of plants in the QTP.

Modelling the Influence of Air Jet Configurations on Non-Woven Steel Fibre Mixing in the Melt Overflow Process

The mixing of non-woven steel fibres in melt overflow process for use in automotive muffler systems was simulated. The aim was to identify optimum parameters for achieving a good fibre mix. Numerical models of mixing chambers of melt overflow process were developed. Multiphysics analyses involving heat transfer, fluid flow and particle tracking were carried out using COMSOL code. The influence of air jet configurations on the fibre distribution was studied. The fibres settled on the moving bed within the mixing chamber were examined for their uniformity. The effect of additional air jets to the existing chamber in a range of regions was explored. An optimum configuration was identified by analyzing the compactness of the particle clusters deposited in the simulation and validated using pixel data acquired from real time imaging. The results showed that by employing dual air jets at the front end of the chamber, the density of the fibre material has improved. We conclude that through multi-physics modelling, it was possible to identify the optimum air-jet configurations leading to fibre uniformity and its distribution. This work also paves the way for incorporating a vision system to evaluate fibre density in real time.

Iridoid glycosides from fruits reduce the growth of fungi associated with fruit rot

Aims Ripe,fleshy fruits generally function as rewards to attract mutualistic seed dispersers,but many fruits also contain high concentrations of toxic secondary *** compounds may serve a variety of adaptive roles in seed dispersal or as a defense against non-dispersing seed predators or *** tested the effects of iridoid glycosides from fruits of a hybrid bush honeysuckle,Lonicera×bella,on the growth of two pathogenic fungal strains associated with fruit rot,Alternaria tenuissima and Aspergillus *** Fungi were isolated from field-collected L.×bella fruits and identified using molecular *** growth rates were assessed in vitro in the presence of varying concentrations of pure loganin,one of the most abundant iridoid glycosides in fruits,as well as fruit extracts containing a mix of at least seven different iridoid *** FindingsLoganin had strong dose-dependent negative effects on the growth of both *** from fruits had no effect on Aspergillus but a strong antifungal effect on Alternaria that increased with fruit *** iridoid glycoside concentrations in extracts were not good predictors of variation in fungal growth,but several individual compounds had significant negative *** iridoid glycosides have primarily been studied as antiherbivore defenses in leaves,these results indicate that they can also function to reduce the growth of fungi associated with fruit rot.

Deep reinforcement learning for home energy management system control

The use of machine learning techniques has been proven to be a viable solution for smart home energy *** techniques autonomously control heating and domestic hot water systems,which are the most relevant loads in a dwelling,helping consumers to reduce energy consumption and also improving their ***,the number of houses equipped with renewable energy resources is increasing,and this is a key ele-ment for energy usage optimization,where coordinating loads and production can bring additional savings and reduce peak *** this regard,we propose the development of a deep reinforcement learning(DRL)algorithm for indoor and domestic hot water temperature control,aiming to reduce energy consumption by optimizing the usage of PV energy ***,a methodology for a new dynamic indoor temperature setpoint definition is presented,thus allowing greater flexibility and *** results show that the proposed DRL al-gorithm combined with the dynamic setpoint achieved on average 8%of energy savings compared to a rule-based algorithm,reaching up to 16%of savings over the summer ***,the users’comfort has not been compromised,as the algorithm is calibrated to not exceed more than 1%of the time out the specified temperature *** analysis shows that further savings could be achieved if the time out of comfort is increased,which could be agreed according to users’*** demand side management,the DRL control shows efficiency by anticipating and delaying actions for a PV self-consumption optimization,performing over 10%of load ***,the renewable energy consumption is 9.5%higher for the DRL-based model compared to the rule-based,which means less energy consumed from the grid.

Developing a global interconnected power system model

Decarbonizing the power sector is a necessary step towards a low-carbon future. Interconnecting power systems on different continents could be a method to contribute to such a future, by utilizing highly efficient renewable resources around the globe, while simultaneously providing additional benefits of power system integration. In this paper, we describe the process of constructing and simulating a global interconnected power system model with high technical and temporal resolution. Being the first of its kind on the global scale, this paper is designed to showcase the proof of concept as an intermediate step to a high resolution global model, by integrating an existing European power system model with the North-American continent. The work to date has been focused on testing the methodology and building up necessary knowledge to realistically simulate the functionality of a possible future global grid. Some initial results are analysed to support the viability of the model and the concept in general. Furthermore, key factors influencing the development and optimal performance of the global interconnected power system model are identified.

Improved Growth and Stress Tolerance in the Arabidopsis oxtl Mutant Triggered by Altered Adenine Metabolism

Plants perceive and respond to environmental stresses with complex mechanisms that are often associ- ated with the activation of antioxidant defenses. A genetic screen aimed at isolating oxidative stress-tolerant lines of Arabidopsis thaliana has identified oxtl, a line that exhibits improved tolerance to oxidative stress and elevated temperature but displays no apparent deleterious growth effects under non-stress conditions. Oxtl harbors a muta- tion that arises from the altered expression of a gene encoding adenine phosphoribosyltransferase （APT1）, an enzyme that converts adenine to adenosine monophosphate （AMP）, indicating a link between purine metabolism, whole-plant growth responses, and stress acclimation. The oxtl mutation results in decreased APT1 expression that leads to reduced enzymatic activity. Correspondingly, oxtl plants possess elevated levels of adenine. Decreased APT enzyme activity dir- ectly correlates with stress resistance in transgenic lines that ectopically express APT1. The metabolic alteration in oxtl plants also alters the expression of several antioxidant defense genes and the response of these genes to oxidative chal- lenge. Finally, it is shown that manipulation of adenine levels can induce stress tolerance to wild-type plants. Collectively, these results show that alterations in cellular adenine levels can trigger stress tolerance and improve growth, leading to increases in plant biomass. The results also suggest that adenine might play a part in the signals that modulate responses to abiotic stress and plant growth.

In seropositive rheumatoid arthritis(RA),the onset of clinically apparent inflammatory arthritis(IA)is typically preceded by a prolonged period of autoimmunity manifest by the presence of circulating autoantibodies that can include antibodies to citrullinated protein antigens(ACPA)and rheumatoid *** period before clinical IA can be designated preclinical RA in those individuals who have progressed to a clinical diagnosis of RA,and an“at‐risk”status in those who have not developed IA but exhibit predictive biomarkers of future clinical *** the goal of developing RA prevention strategies,studies have characterized immune phenotypes of preclinical RA/at-risk *** these studies,a model has emerged wherein mucosal inflammation and dysbiosis may lead first to local autoantibody production,which should normally be transient,but instead is followed by a systemic spread of the autoimmunity as manifested by serum autoantibody elevations,ultimately driving the development of clinically identified joint *** model can be envisioned as the progression of disease development through serial“checkpoints”that in principle should constrain or resolve autoimmunity;however,instead,the checkpoints“fail”and clinical RA *** we review the immune processes that are likely to be present at each step and the potential therapeutic strategies that could be envisioned to delay,diminish,halt,or even reverse the progression to clinical ***,these prevention strategies could utilize existing therapies approved for clinical RA,therapies approved for other diseases that target relevant pathways in the preclinical/at-risk state,or approaches that target novel pathways.

Posterior interosseous nerve localization within the proximal forearm-a patient normalized parameter

AIM To provide a "patient-normalized" parameter in the proximal forearm. METHODS Sixty-three cadaveric upper extremities from thirty-five cadavers were studied. A muscle splitting approach was utilized to locate the posterior interosseous nerve(PIN) at the point where it emerges from beneath the supinator. The supinator was carefully incised to expose the midpoint length of the nerve as it passes into the forearm while preserving the associated fascial connections, thereby preserving the relationship of the nerve with the muscle. We measured the transepicondylar distance(TED), PIN distance in the forearm's neutral rotation position, pronation position, supination position, and the nerve width. Two individuals performed measurements using a digital caliper with inter-observer and intraobserver blinding. The results were analyzed with the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test for paired samples. RESULTS In pronation, the PIN was within two confidence intervals of 1.0 TED in 95% of cases(range 0.7-1.3 TED); in neutral, within two confidence intervals of 0.84 TED in 95% of cases(range 0.5-1.1 TED); in supination,within two confidence intervals of 0.72 TED in 95% of cases(range 0.5-0.9 TED). The mean PIN distance from the lateral epicondyle was 100% of TED in a pronated forearm, 84% in neutral, and 72% in supination. Predictive accuracy was highest in supination; in all cases the majority of specimens(90.47%-95.23%) are within 2 cm of the forearm position-specific percentage of TED. When comparing right to left sides for TEDs with the signed Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test for paired samples as well as a significance test(with normal distribution), the P-value was 0.0357(significance-0.05) indicating a significant difference between the two *** This "patient normalized" parameter localizes the PIN crossing a line drawn between the lateral epicondyle and the radial styloid. Accurate PIN localization will aid in diagnosis, injections, and surgical approaches.
