River width and depth as key factors of diurnal activity energy expenditure allocation for wintering Spot-billed Ducks in the Xin'an River Basin

Rivers are important habitats for wintering waterbirds.However,they are easily influenced by natural and human activities.An important approach for waterbirds to adapt to habitats is adjusting the activity time and energy expenditure allocation of diurnal behavior.The compensatory foraging hypothesis predicts that increased energy expenditure leads to longer foraging time,which in turn increases food intake and helps maintain a constant energy balance.However,it is unclear whether human-disturbed habitats result in increased energy expenditure related to safety or foraging.In this study,the scan sample method was used to observe the diurnal behavior of the wintering Spot-billed Duck(Anas poecilorhyncha) in two rivers in the Xin’an River Basin from October 2021 to March 2022.The allocation of time and energy expenditure for activity in both normal and disturbed environments was calculated.The results showed that foraging accounted for the highest percentage of time and energy expenditure.Additionally,foraging decreased in the disturbed environment than that in the normal environment.Resting behavior showed the opposite trend,while other behaviors were similar in both environments.The total diurnal energy expenditure of ducks in the disturbed environment was greater than that in the normal environment,with decreased foraging and resting time percentage and increased behaviors related to immediate safety(swimming and alert) and comfort.These results oppose the compensatory foraging hypothesis in favor of increased security.The optimal diurnal energy expenditure model included river width and water depth,which had a positive relationship;an increase in either of these two factors resulted in an increase in energy expenditure.This study provides a better understanding of energy allocation strategies underlying the superficial time allocation of wintering waterbirds according to environmental conditions.Exploring these changes can help understand the maximum fitness of wintering waterbirds in response to nature and hum

Red bayberry(Morella rubra)is an evergreen fruit tree found in southern China whose whole-genome sequence has recently been published.We updated the linkage map of the species by adding 118 SSR markers and the femalespecific marker MrFT2_BD-SEX.The integrated map included eight linkage groups and spanned 491 cM.Eleven sexassociated markers were identified,six of which were located in linkage group 8,in agreement with the previously reported location of the sex-determining region.The MrFT2_BD-SEX marker was genotyped in 203 cultivated accessions.Among the females of the accessions,we found two female-specific alleles,designated W-b(151 bp)and W-d(129 bp).We previously found that‘Dongkui’,a female cultivar,could produce viable pollen(we refer to such plants‘Dongkui-male’)and serve as the paternal parent in crosses.The genotypes of the MrFT2_BD-SEX marker were W-b/Z in‘Biqi’and W-d/Z in‘Dongkui-male’.The progeny of a cross between these parents produced a 3:1 female(W-)to male(ZZ)ratio and the expected 1:1:1:1 ratio of W-b/W-d:W-b/Z:W-d/Z:Z/Z.In addition,the flowering and fruiting phenotypes of all the F1 progeny fit their genotypes.Our results confirm the existence of ZW sex determination and show that the female phenotype is controlled by a single dominant locus(W)in a small genomic region(59 kb and less than 3.3 cM).Furthermore,we have produced a homozygous“super female”(WW)that should produce all-female offspring in the F2 generation,providing a foundation for commercial use and presenting great potential for use in modern breeding programs.

OsPDR20 is an ABCG metal transporter regulating cadmium accumulation in rice

Cadmium(Cd)is a non-essential toxic heavy metal,seriously posing high environmental risks to human health.Digging genetic resources relevant to functional genes is important for understanding the metal absorption and accumulation in crops and bioremediation of Cd-polluted environments.This study investigated a functionally uncharacterized ATP binding cassette transporter G family(ABCG)gene encoding a Pleiotropic Drug Resistance 20(PDR20)type metal transporter which is localized to the plasma membrane of rice.OsPDR20 was transcriptionally expressed in almost all tissues and organs in lifespan and was strongly induced in roots and shoots of young rice under Cd stress.Ectopic expression of OsPDR20 in a yeast mutant ycf1 sensitive to Cd conferred cellular tolerance with less Cd accumulation.Knockdown of OsPDR20 by RNA interference(RNAi)moderately attenuated root/shoot elongation and biomass,with reduced chlorophylls in rice grown under hydroponic medium with 2 and 10μmol/L Cd,but led to more Cd accumulation.A field trial of rice grown in a realistic Cd-contaminated soil(0.40 mg/kg)showed that RNAi plants growth and development were also compromised compared to wild-type(WT),with smaller panicles and lower spikelet fertility but little effect on yield of grains.However,OsPDR20 suppression resulted in unexpectedly higher levels of Cd accumulation in rice straw including lower leaves and culm and grain.These results suggest that OsPDR20 is actively involved in Cd accumulation and homeostasis in rice crops.The increased Cd accumulation in the RNAi plants has the potential application in phytoremediation of Cd-polluted wetland soils.

Exploring changes of precipitation extremes under climate change through global variable-resolution modeling

Understanding the responses of precipitation extremes to global climate change remains limited owing to their poor representations in models and complicated interactions with multi-scale systems.Here we take the record-breaking precipitation over China in 2021 as an example,and study its changes under three different climate scenarios through a developed pseudo-global-warming(PGW)experimental framework with 60-3 km variable-resolution global ensemble modeling.Compared to the present climate,the precipitation extreme under a warmer(cooler)climate increased(decreased)in intensity,coverage,and total amount at a range of 24.3%-37.8%(18.7%-56.1%).With the help of the proposed PGW experimental framework,we further reveal the impacts of the multi-scale system interactions in climate change on the precipitation extreme.Under the warmer climate,large-scale water vapor transport converged from double typhoons and the subtropical high marched into central China,enhancing the convective energy and instability on the leading edge of the transport belt.As a result,the mesoscale convective system(Mcs)that directly contributed to the precipitation extreme became stronger than that in the present climate.On the contrary,the cooler climate displayed opposite changing characteristics relative to the warmer climate,ranging from the large-scale systems to local environments and to the Mcs.In summary,our study provides a promising approach to scientifically assess the response of precipitation extremes to climate change,making it feasible to perform ensemble simulations while investigating the multi-scale system interactions over the globe.

The exploration of sustainable energy utilization requires the imple-mentation of advanced electrochemical devices for efficient energy conversion and storage,which are enabled by the usage of cost-effective,high-performance electro-catalysts.Currently,heterogeneous atomically dispersed catalysts are considered as potential candidates for a wide range of applications.Compared to conventional cata-lysts,atomically dispersed metal atoms in carbon-based catalysts have more unsatu-rated coordination sites,quantum size effect,and strong metal-support interactions,resulting in exceptional catalytic activity.Of these,dual-atomic catalysts(DACs)have attracted extensive attention due to the additional synergistic effect between two adja-cent metal atoms.DACs have the advantages of full active site exposure,high selectiv-ity,theoretical 100%atom utilization,and the ability to break the scaling relationship of adsorption free energy on active sites.In this review,we summarize recent research advancement of DACs,which includes(1)the comprehensive understanding of the synergy between atomic pairs;(2)the synthesis of DACs;(3)characterization meth-ods,especially aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron spectroscopy;and(4)electrochemical energy-related applications.The last part focuses on great potential for the electrochemical catalysis of energy-related small molecules,such as oxygen reduction reaction,CO_(2) reduction reaction,hydrogen evolution reaction,and N_(2) reduction reaction.The future research challenges and opportunities are also raised in prospective section.

In this work,the(2+1)-dimensional Date–Jimbo–Kashiwara–Miwa(DJKM)equation is studied by means of the ■-dressing method.A new ■ problem has been constructed by analyzing the characteristic function and the Green’s function of its Lax representation.Based on solving the ■ equation and choosing the proper spectral transformation,the solution of the DJKM equation is constructed.Furthermore,the more general solution of the DJKM equation can be also obtained by ensuring the evolution of the time spectral data.

Understanding and management of triplet excitons transition in the same molecule remain a great challenge.Hence,for the first time,by host engineering,manageable transitions of triplet excitons in a naphthalimide derivative NDOH were achieved,and monitored through the intensity ratio(ITADF/IRTP)between thermally activated delayed fluorescence(TADF)and room-temperature phosphorescence(RTP).Energy differences between lowest triplet excited states of host and guest were changed from 0.03 to 0.17 eV,and ITADF/IRTP of NDOH decreased by 200 times,thus red shifting the afterglow color.It was proposed that shorter conjugation length led to larger band gaps of host materials,thus contributing to efficient dexter and inefficient Förster energy transfer.Interestingly,no transition to singlet state and only strongest RTP with quantum yield of 13.9%could be observed,when PBNC with loosest stacking and largest band gap acted as host.This work provides novel insight for the management and prediction of triplet exciton transitions and the development of smart afterglow materials.

An end‐to‐end infant brain parcellation pipeline

Objective Accurate infant brain parcellation is crucial for understanding early brain development;however,it is challenging due to the inherent low tissue contrast,high noise,and severe partial volume effects in infant magnetic resonance images(MRIs).The aim of this study was to develop an end-to-end pipeline that enabled accurate parcellation of infant brain MRIs.Methods We proposed an end-to-end pipeline that employs a two-stage global-to-local approach for accurate parcellation of infant brain MRIs.Specifically,in the global regions of interest(ROIs)localization stage,a combination of transformer and convolution operations was employed to capture both global spatial features and fine texture features,enabling an approximate localization of the ROIs across the whole brain.In the local ROIs refinement stage,leveraging the position priors from the first stage along with the raw MRIs,the boundaries of the ROIs are refined for a more accurate parcellation.Results We utilized the Dice ratio to evaluate the accuracy of parcellation results.Results on 263 subjects from National Database for Autism Research(NDAR),Baby Connectome Project(BCP)and Cross-site datasets demonstrated the better accuracy and robustness of our method than other competing methods.Conclusion Our end-to-end pipeline may be capable of accurately parcellating 6-month-old infant brain MRIs.

Transfer film effects induced by 3D-printed polyether-ether-ketone with excellent tribological properties for joint prosthesis

Based on the building principle of additive manufacturing,printing orientation mainly determines the tribological properties of joint prostheses.In this study,we created a polyether-ether-ketone(PEEK)joint prosthesis using fused filament fabrication and investigated the effects of printing orientation on its tribological properties using a pin-on-plate tribometer in 25% newborn calf serum.An ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene transfer film is formed on the surface of PEEK due to the mechanical capture of wear debris by the 3D-printed groove morphology,which is significantly impacted by the printing orientation of PEEK.When the printing orientation was parallel to the sliding direction of friction,the number and size of the transfer film increased due to higher steady stress.This transfer film protected the matrix and reduced the friction coefficient and wear rate of friction pairs by 39.13%and 74.33%,respectively.Furthermore,our findings provide a novel perspective regarding the role of printing orientation in designing knee prostheses,facilitating its practical applications.

Non-Convex Optimization of Resource Allocation in Fog Computing Using Successive Approximation

Fog computing can deliver low delay and advanced IT services to end users with substantially reduced energy consumption.Nevertheless,with soaring demands for resource service and the limited capability of fog nodes,how to allocate and manage fog computing resources properly and stably has become the bottleneck.Therefore,the paper investigates the utility optimization-based resource allocation problem between fog nodes and end users in fog computing.The authors first introduce four types of utility functions due to the diverse tasks executed by end users and build the resource allocation model aiming at utility maximization.Then,for only the elastic tasks,the convex optimization method is applied to obtain the optimal results;for the elastic and inelastic tasks,with the assistance of Jensen’s inequality,the primal non-convex model is approximated to a sequence of equivalent convex optimization problems using successive approximation method.Moreover,a two-layer algorithm is proposed that globally converges to an optimal solution of the original problem.Finally,numerical simulation results demonstrate its superior performance and effectiveness.Comparing with other works,the authors emphasize the analysis for non-convex optimization problems and the diversity of tasks in fog computing resource allocation.
