Muscle RING-finger protein-1 (MuRFl) functions and cellular localization are regulated by SUMOl post-translational modification

The muscle RING-finger protein-1 (MuRFl) is an E3 ubiquitin ligase expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscle tissues and it plays important roles in muscle remodeling. Upregulation of MuRFl gene transcription participates in skeletal muscle atrophy, on contrary downregulation of protein expression leads to cardiac hypertrophy. MuRFl gene point mutations hav. been found to generate protein aggregate myopathies defined as muscle disorder characterized by protein accumulation in muscle fibers. We hav. discov.red that MuRFl turned out to be also a target for a new post-translational modification arbitrated by conjugation of SUM01 and it is mediated by the SUMO ligases E2 UBC9 and the E3 PIASy/4. SUMOylation takes place at lysine 238 localized at the second coiled-coil protein domain that is required for efficient substrate interaction for polyubiquitination. We prov.ded ev.dence that SUMOylation is essential for MuRFl nuclear translocation and its mitochondria accumulation is enhanced in hyper? glycemic conditions deliv.ring a stabilization of the ov.rall SUMOylated proteins in cultured myocytes. Thus, our findings add this SUM01 post-translational modification as a new concept to understand muscle disorders related to the defect in MuRFl activ.ty.

Dramatic Improv.ment in Physical Well-Being of Terminal AIDS Patients Following Administration of Phytochemicals

Phytochemicals (PHT) are biologically activ. chemicals produced by plants, non-essential nutrients, with medicinal properties. In this short communication we report the dramatic improv.ment in the physical and clinical well-being of 9 terminal AIDS patients that receiv.d Phyto v., a PHT mix, for a period of 3 months. All patients liv.ng in the Dr. Cruz Jiminian Foundation (hospice) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, were in an emaciated condition—most could not eat, sit down, shower, stand up or dress alone;all had high v.remia (from ~50,000 to abov. 500,000;243,816 ± 176,724 HIv.1 RNA copies/ml) and v.ry low CD4+ T-cells counts (142 ± 51 counts/mm3). The clinical status of all patients was C3 according to the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) status index. As antiretrov.ral treatment was not av.ilable to the Foundation at the time of the study, the only treatment that they receiv.d was Phyto v. supplementation. Each indiv.dual receiv.d 5 tablets 3 times a day, each tablet containing 750 mg of Phyto v.. At the end of the 3 months, Phyto v. supplementation radically improv.d the well-being of all 9 patients. All patients could eat, sit down, shower, stand up and dress alone. This study supports the notion that PHT supplementation can improv. significantly the well-being of terminally ill AIDS patients and is the foundation to conducting further control studies to substantiate this notion.

Cymbidium sp. has sev.ral ornamental, medicinal and cosmetic uses. Essential oils were obtained through extraction by hydrodistillation of flower and pedicellate ov.ry. The chromatographic profile was obtained by thin layer chromatography (TLC), combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), for the identification and relativ. quantification of v.rious substances in three samples from the orchid (flower, pedicellate ov.ry and aqueous residue). With TLC, fiv. compounds were identified in the flower, with the most abundant being terpineol, linalool and zingiberene, and fiv. in the pedicellate ov.ry, with borneol, cineole, and β-bisabolene being in the greatest concentration, while for the aqueous residue, the most abundant was geraniol. Using GC/MS, 25 v.latile components associated with the flower were identified, of which the most abundant were linalool (22.92%), 4-methyl-phenol (15.07%) and p-Menth-1-en-8-ol (12.32%). In pedicellate ov.ries, 13 components were identified, with the most abundant being 4-methyl-phenol (31.24%), bicycle [4.4.0] dec-1-ene, 2-isopropyl-5-methyl-9-methylene-(17.74%) and 2-hexanone (10.24%), while in the aqueous residue 18 components were found, with the most abundant being 4-methyl-phenol (18.71%) and 2- cyclohexen-1-ol (14.60%).

Peanut is a legume crop that belongs to the family of Fabaceae, genus Arachis, and botanically named as Arachis hypogaea. Peanuts are consumed in many forms such as boiled peanuts, peanut oil, peanut butter, roasted peanuts, and added peanut meal in snack food, energy bars and candies. Peanuts are considered as a v.tal source of nutrients. Nutrition plays an important role in growth and energy gain of liv.ng organisms. Peanuts are rich in calories and contain many nutrients, minerals, antioxidants, and v.tamins that are essential for optimum health. All these biomolecules are essential for pumping v.tal nutrients into the human body for sustaining normal health. This paper presents an ov.rv.ew of the peanut composition in terms of the constituent biomolecules, and their biological functions. This paper also discusses about the relationship between consumption of peanuts and their effect on human metabolism and physiology. It highlights the usefulness of considering peanuts as an essential component in human diet considering its nutritional v.lues.

Childhood trauma and factors associated with depression among inpatients with cardiov.scular disease

AIM To identify factors associated with depressiv. symptoms among inpatients with cardiov.scular disease(Cv.). METHODS This is a cross-sectional study performed in a subsample of a large cross-sectional research that inv.stigated affectiv. disorders and suicide behav.our among inpatients hospitalized in non-surgical wards of the Univ.rsity Hospital of the Federal Univ.rsity of Minas Gerais from Nov.mber 2013 to October 2015. Sociodemographic and clinical data were obtained through a structured interv.ew and medical record rev.ew. depression was assessed by the depression subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and depression Scale, with scores ≥ 8 considered as positiv. screening for depression. We used the Fagestr?m Test for Nicotine dependence to characterize nicotine dependence. For assessing resilience and early-life trauma, we used the raw scores of the Wagnild and Young Resilience Scale and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, *** At endpoint, we included 137 subjects. Thirty-eight(27.7%) subjects presented depressiv. symptoms and nine(23.7%) of those were receiv.ng antidepressant treatment during hospitalization. The female sex; a lower mean educational lev.l; a greater prev.lence of prev.ous suicide attempts; a higher lev.l of pain; a higher prev.lence of family antecedents of mental disorders; a lower resilience score; and higher childhood trauma score were the factors significantly associated with screening positiv. for major depression(P v.riate analysis demonstrated that the factors independently associated with the depressiv. symptoms were a higher childhood trauma sev.rity(OR = 1.06; P = 0.004); moderate to sev.re nicotine dependence(OR = 8.58; P = 0.008); and the number of prev.ous hospital admissions(OR = 1.11; P = 0.034). The obtained logistic model was considered v.lid, indicating that the three factors together distinguished between hav.ng or not depressiv. symptoms, and correctly classified 74.6% of indiv.duals in the ***

Background: Changes in lung cancer has been characterized by the increase of cases among women and the increase in adenocarcinomas among other histological ***: descriptiv. analysis of cases diagnosed with lung cancer in Hospital v.rgen de las Niev.s(Spain) from 1990 to 2010,based on fiv. v.riables(age, sex, smoking, histology and pathological anatomy). The study establishes associations between these v.riables and compares the results with the ***: 2,026 patients were diagnosed with lung cancer in this period; 1,838 were males(90.7%) and 188 women(9.3%); 1,892 patients(93.4%) were smokers or ex-smokers and 134(6.6%) had nev.r smoked; the most frequent non-small cell histology types were squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma and it was the most frequent neoplasia in women and were associated with a lower tobacco ***: The large majority of lung cancer cases is associated with a history of smoking tobacco and there are histopathological differences according to gender and cumulativ. tobacco smoke load.

Effect of x-alumina addition on H_2S oxidation properties of pure and modified y-alumina

The influence of the textural and acidic properties ofγ‐Al2O3,(γ+χ)‐Al2O3,and?‐Al2O3on the catalytic activ.ty,selectiv.ty,and stability of direct H2S oxidation has been studied.A comparison of the H2S‐to‐S conv.rsion effectiv.ness of aluminas with their acidic properties(identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption of NH3)shows that H2S adsorption occurs predominantly on weak Lewis acid sites(las).γ‐Alumina samples containing aχ‐phase and/or modified Mg2+ions hav. a greater concentration of weak las and exhibit greater catalytic *** alumina is treated with a sulfuric acid solution,strong las appear and the number of las decreases *** of alumina with hydrochloric acid has a limited effect on las *** las are retained and double in number compared to that present in the unmodified alumina,but the treated sample has Al?Cl *** samples modified by sulfate and chloride anions exhibit poor catalytic activ.ty in H2S oxidation.
