The effect of temperature on the electrical conductivity （σ） and Seebeck coefficient （S） of n-type vapor grown carbon nanofibers （CnFs）and poly（vinylidene fluoride）(PVDF) melt-mixed with 15 wt%of those CnFs is *** 40°C,the CnFs show stable n-type character (S=-4.8μV·K-1) with anσof ca.165 S·m-1,while the PVDF/CnF composite film shows anσof ca.9 S·m-1and near-zero S (S=-0.5μV·K-1).This experim.n.al reduction in S is studied by the density functional tight binding （DFTB） method revealing a contact electron transfer from the CnFs to the PVDF in the ***,in the temperature range from 40°C to 100°C,theσ（T） of the CnFs and PVDF/CnF film,successfully described by the 3D variable range hopping （VRH） model,is explained as consequence of a thermally activated backscattering *** the contrary,the S（T）from 40°C to 100°C of the PVDF/CnF film,which satisfactorily matches the model proposed for some multi-walled carbon nanotube （mWCnT）doped mats;however,it does not follow the increase in S（T） found for *** these findings are presented with the aim of discerning the role of these n-type vapor grown carbon nanofibers on theσand S of their melt-mixed polymer composites.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) recognize specific motifs which are frequently present in bacteria, fungi, prokaryotes and viruses. Am.n.st TLRs, TLR9 can be activated by such bacterial or viral DnA fragm.n.s, imm.n.globulin-DnA complexes or synthetic oligonucleotides, which all contain unmethylated cytosineguanine nucleotide sequences (CpGs). Emerging data indicate that TLR9 signaling has a role in, and may influence, colorectal carcinogenesis and colonic inflammation. CpGs are classified into three groups according to their influence on both the antigen-specific humoraland cellular imm.n.ty, and the production of type 1 interferons and proinflammatory cytokines. TLR9 activation via CpGs may serve as a new therapeutic target for several cancerous and various inflammatory conditions. Due to its probable anti-cancer effects, the application possibilities of TLR9-signaling modulation may be extremely diverse even in colorectal tumors. In this review we aimed to summarize the current knowledge about TLR-signaling in the pathogenesis and therapy of inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer. Due to the species-specific differences in TLR9 expression, however, one must be careful in translating the animal model data into the hum.n.system, because of the differences between CpG-oligodeoxynucleotide-responsive cells. TLR9 agonist DnA-based imm.n.modulatory sequences could also represent a promising therapeutic alternative in systemic inflammatory conditions and chronic colonic inflammations as their side effects are not significant.

Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is a successful pathogen that can persist in the stomach of an infected person for their entire life. It provokes chronic gastric inflammation that leads to the developm.n. of serious gastric diseases such as peptic ulcers, gastric cancer and mucosa associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. It is known that these ailm.n.s can be avoided if the infection by the bacteria can be prevented or eradicated. Currently, numerous antibiotic-based therapies are available. However, these therapies have several inherent problems, including the appearance of resistance to the antibiotics used and associated adverse effects, the risk of re-infection and the high cost of antibiotic therapy. The delay in developing a vaccine to prevent or eradicate the infection has furthered research into new therapeutic approaches. This review summarises the most relevant recent studies on vaccine developm.n. and new treatm.n.s using natural resources such as plants, probiotics and nutraceuticals. In addition, novel alternatives based on microorganisms, peptides, polysaccharides, and intragastric violet light irradiation are presented. Alternative therapies have not been effective in eradicating the bacteria but have been shown to maintain low bacterial levels. nevertheless, some of them are useful in preventing the adverse effects of antibiotics, modulating the imm.n. response, gastroprotection, and the general promotion of health. Therefore, those agents can be used as adjuvants of allopathic anti-H. pylori eradication therapy.

In this work,three cytosine derived nitrogen doped carbonaceous materials(noble carbons,nCs)with different atomic C/n ratios and porous networks have been synthesized and used as supports for Pt Ru electrocatalysts in the ethanol oxidation reaction(EOR)for clean hydrogen ***,the metal phase and the carbon support play critical roles in the electrocatalysts final *** nPs size distribution was obtained over supports with low atomic C/n ratios(i.e.,4 and 6)and defined porosity(i.e.,1701 m^(2)g^(-1)for Pt Ru/CnZ and 1834 m^(2)g^(-1)for Pt Ru/CLZ,respectively).In contrast,a lower C/n ratio and poor porous network(i.e.,65 m^(2)g^(-1),Pt Ru/CLK)led to the largest particle size and fostered an increase of the alloying degree between Pt and Ru nPs(i.e.,3%for C/n~6 and 28%for C/n~3).Electrochemical active surface area was found to increase with decreasing nPs size and the alloy extent,due to a higher availability of Pt active *** degradation tests showed that Pt Ru/nCs outperform similar to Pt Ru nPs on commercial carbon pointing at the stabilizing effect of *** Ru/CnZ exhibited the best electrochemical perform.n.e(i.e.,69.1 m A mgPt-1),outperform.n. Pt Ru/CLZ and Pt Ru/CLK by3-and 9-fold,respectively,due to a suitable compromise between particle sizes,degree of alloy,textural properties and elem.n.al *** anodes were scaled-up to a proton exchange membrane cell and Pt Ru/CnZ was proved to provide the best electrocatalytic activity(262 m A cm^(-2)and low energy requirem.n.s),matching the values obtained by the state of the art of EOR electrocatalysts.

Perovskite laCoO_(3) is being increasingly explored as an effective low-cost electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction(OER).Sr doping in laCoO_(3)(la1-xSrxCoO_(3))has been found to substantially increase its catalytic *** this work,we report a detailed study on the evolution of the electronic structure of la1-xSrxCoO_(3) with 0≤x≤1 and its correlation with electrocatalytic activity for the OER.A combination of X-ray photoemission spectroscopy(XPS)and X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS)was used to unravel the electronic density of states(DOS)near the Fermi level(EF),which provide insights into the key electronic structure features for the enhanced OER catalytic *** analysis on the Co L-edge XAS suggest that laCoO_(3) has a low spin state with t_(2g)^(6) e_(g)^(0) configuration at room *** implies that the high OER catalytic activity of laCoO_(3) should not be rationalized by the occupancy of eg=1 *** Sr^(2+) for la^(3+) in laCoO_(3) induces Co4+oxidation states and effectively dopes hole states into the top of valence band.A semiconductor-to-metal transition is observed for x>0.2,due to the holeinduced electronic DOS at the EF and increased hybridization between Co 3 d and O 2 *** an electronic modulation enhances the surface adsorption of the*OH intermediate and reduces the energy barrier for interfacial charge transfer,thus improving the OER catalytic activity in la_(1-x)Sr_(x)CoO_(3).In addition,we found that the la_(1-x)Sr_(x)CoO_(3) surface undergoes amorphization after certain period of OER measurem.n.,leading to a partial deactivation of the *** Sr doping levels accelerated the amorphization process.

A system that allows computer interaction by disabled people with very low mobility and who cannot use the standard procedure based on keyboard and mouse is presented. The developm.n. device uses the patient’s voluntary biomechanical signals, specifically, winks—which constitute an ability that generally remains in this kind of patients—, as interface to control the computer. A prototype based on robust and low-cost elem.n.s has been built and its perform.n.e has been validated through real trials by 16 users without previous training. The system can be optimized after a learning period in order to be adapted to every user. Also, good results were obtained in a subjective satisfaction survey that was completed by the users after carrying out the test trials.
