We look at the link between c.imate c.ange and vec.or-borne diseases in low- and middle-inc.me c.untries in Afric.. The large endemic.ty and esc.lating threat of diseases suc. as malaria and arboviral diseases, intensified by c.imate c.ange, disproportionately affec.s vulnerable c.mmunities globally. We highlight the urgenc. of prioritizing researc. and development, advoc.ting for robust sc.entific.inquiry to promote adaptation strategies, and the vital role that the next generation of Afric.n researc. leaders will play in addressing these c.allenges. Despite signific.nt c.allenges suc. as funding shortages within c.untries, various pan-Afric.n-oriented funding bodies suc. as the Afric.n Ac.demy of Sc.enc.s, the Afric. Researc. Exc.llenc. Fund, the Wellc.me Trust, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as initiatives suc. as the Afric.n Researc. Initiative for Sc.entific.Exc.llenc. and the Pan-Afric.n Mosquito c.ntrol Assoc.ation, have empowered (or are empowering) these researc.ers by supporting c.pac.ty building ac.ivities, inc.uding c.ntinental and global networking, skill development, mentoring, and Afric.n-led researc.. This artic.e undersc.res the urgenc. of inc.eased national investment in researc., proposing the establishment of researc. government agenc.es to drive evidenc.-based interventions. c.llaboration between governments and sc.entific.c.mmunities, sustained by pan-Afric.n funding bodies, is c.uc.al. Through these efforts, Afric.n nations are likely to enhanc. the resilienc. and adaptive c.pac.ty of their systems and c.mmunities by navigating these c.allenges effec.ively, fostering sc.entific.exc.llenc. and implementing transformative solutions against c.imate-sensitive vec.or-borne diseases.

Physic.l Ac.ivity, Mediterranean Diet and Biomarkers-Assessed Risk of Alzheimer’s: A Multi-Modality Brain Imaging Study

Inc.eased physic.l ac.ivity and higher adherenc. to a Mediterranean-type diet (MeDi) have been independently assoc.ated with reduc.d risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Their assoc.ation has not been investigated with the use of biomarkers. This study examines whether, among c.gnitively normal (NL) individuals, those who are less physic.lly ac.ive and show lower MeDi adherenc. have brain biomarker abnormalities c.nsistent with AD. Methods: Forty-five NL individuals (age 54 ± 11, 71% women) with c.mplete leisure time physic.l ac.ivity (LTA), dietary information, and c.oss-sec.ional 3D T1-weigthed MRI, 11c.Pittsburgh c.mpound B (PiB) and 18F-fluorodeoxygluc.se (FDG) Positron Emission Tomography (PET) sc.ns were examined. Voxel-wise multivariate partial least square (PLS) regression was used to examine the effec.s of LTA, MeDi and their interac.ion on brain biomarkers. Age, gender, ethnic.ty, educ.tion, c.loric.intake, BMI, family history of AD, Apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype, presenc. of hypertension and insulin resistanc. were examined as c.nfounds. Subjec.s were dic.otomized into more and less physic.lly ac.ive (LTA+ vs. LTA-;n = 21 vs. 24), and into higher vs. lower MeDi adherenc. groups (n = 18 vs. 27) using published sc.ring methods. Spatial patterns of brain biomarkers that represented the optimal assoc.ation between the images and the groups were generated for all modalities using voxel-wise multivariate Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression. Results: Groups were c.mparable for c.inic.l and neuropsyc.ologic.l measures. Independent effec.s of LTA and MeDi fac.ors were observed in AD-vulnerable brain regions for all modalities (p β load and lower gluc.se metabolism) were observed in LTA- c.mpared to LTA+ subjec.s, and in MeDi- as c.mpared to MeDi+ subjec.s. The Voisey's Bay Ni-c.-c. sulfide deposit is hosted in a 1.34 Ga mafic.intrusion that is part of the Nain Plutonic.Suite in Labrador, *** Ni-c.-c. sulfide mineralization is assoc.ated with magmatic.brec.ias that are typic.lly c.ntained in weakly mineralized olivine gabbros, troc.olites and ferrogabbros, but also oc.ur as veins in adjac.nt *** mineralization is assoc.ated with a dyke-like body whic. is termed the feeder *** dyke c.nnec.s the shallow differentiated Eastern Deeps c.amber in the east to a deeper intrusion in the west termed the Western Deeps *** the c.nduit is c.nnec.ed to the Eastern Deeps Intrusion, the Eastern Deeps Deposit is developed at the entry line of the dyke along the steep north wall of the Eastern Deeps *** Eastern Deeps Deposit is surrounded by a halo of moderately to weakly mineralized Variable-Textured Troc.olite (VTT) that reac.es a maximum thic.ness above the ENE-WSW axis of the Eastern Deeps Deposit. At depth to the west, the c.nduit is adjac.nt to the south side of the Western Deeps Intrusion, where the dyke and intrusion c.ntain disseminated magmatic.sulfide *** Reid Brook Zone plunges to the east within the dyke, and both the dyke and adjac.nt paragneiss are *** Ovoid Deposit c.mprises a bowl-shaped body of massive sulfide where the dyke widens near to the present-day *** is not c.ear whether this deposit was developed as a widened-zone within the c.nduit or at the entry point into a c.amber that is now lost to erosion.
