Effect of Laser Fluence on the Characteristics of Ag Nanoparticles Produced by Laser Ablation

6-12 nm silver nanoparticles were synthesized by the pulsed laser ablation of a high purity silver bulk in distilled water. Effect of laser fluence on the size, morphology and structure of produced nanoparticles has been studied experimentally. Pulses of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser of 1064 wavelength at 7 ns pulse width at different fluences were employed to irradiate the silver target in water. The UV-Visible absorption spectra of the Ag nanoparticles exhibit surface plasmon resonance absorption peak in the UV region. TEM and SEM micrographs, in a good agreement with DLS results, indicate that with increasing the laser fluence the average size of spherical Ag nanoparticles is decreased. It is found that Ag nanoparticles exhibit photoluminescence emission with two peaks because of the inter band transition and electron-hole recombination.

The deposits of Permian system in Kuh-e-Gahkum consist of 480 m clastic subdiffusion of Faraghan Formation and carbonates of Dalan Formation. In this section, the sediments of Faraghan Formation, which is gradationally overlain by Dalan formation, unconformably overlies Zakin Formation (Lower Carboniferous). In the upper part, Kangan Formation rests on the Permian deposits with an erosional and unconformable contact. Studying the microscopic thin sections led to the identification of 37 genera and 37 species of Foraminifera as well as 14 genera and 15 species of algae. According to the identified foraminifera in Faraghan and Dalan Formations, the age of the rock units in Permian system is assigned to Julfian-Asselian.

Association between Weight Change during Treatment and Treatment Outcome in Patients with Smear Positive Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is known as a disease of poverty and declared as a global public health emergency by World Health Organization (WHO). Pulmonary tuberculosis is the most common type of TB and is a wasting disease. It is expected that the patients who lost weight during the course of disease, will gain weight during successful treatment. So the aim of this study was to assess the body weight changes through the treatment and its possible association with treatment outcome in TB patients in Nishapur, an ancient city in Razavi Khorasan province in Iran. This is an observational analytical study. Patients were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria and available information. Treatment Protocol for all patients was Directly Observed Treatment, short Course Strategy (at least 6 months). All patients were weighed at the beginning of treatment, after two months and at the end of treatment. Outcome of treatment was classified into: cured, completed treatment, treatment failure and death. Then the impact of weight changes during treatment was compared in subgroups. From 874 patients, 819 patients (93.9%) were new cases, 48 (5.3%) relapse, 5 patients (0.6%) patients who did not complete their treatment and 2 (0.2%) had failed prior therapy. The most common symptoms in all patients were: cough, sputum, weight loss, fever, sweats, and hemoptysis. 8.1% of patients had radiologic signs and the most common signs were cavity (2.9%). The weight change during treatment was 2.91 ± 5.59 kg in cured group, 3.3 ± 3.29 kg in completed treatment group, 2.95 ± 5.59 kg in treatment failure group and 1.02 ± 3.27 in dead group respectively. These differences were statistically significant between the four groups (p < 0.03). We can conclude that body weight change can be used as a predictor for the treatment outcome.

Effective Factors in Urinary Tract Infection Prevention among Children: Application of Health Belief Model

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infections among children using preventive manipulations, especially among children less than 6 years old. This study aimed at exploring factors which could affect urinary tract infection prevention among children. A descriptive analytical study was conducted on 70 mothers who had children less than 6 years old in 2013. Multistage cluster sampling method was utilized in which each kindergarten was considered as a cluster and data were collected by a researcher-made questionnaire designed based on Health Belief Model (HBM). Validity and reliability of questionnaire were confirmed by a pilot study. ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient were conducted using SPSS, version 18. The mean and standard deviation of knowledge and practice were 6.96 ± 2.14 and 15.47 ± 1.54 respectively. Means and standard deviation of Health Belief Model constructs (perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers and self-efficacy) were 17.64 ± 2.50, 22.02 ± 2.55, 20.90 ± 2.38, 27.56 ± 5.20 and 21.49 ± 3.18 respectively. More participants were in the moderate levels of knowledge (74.3%) and practice (45.7%). These findings revealed a significant relation between practice and perceived susceptibility (p = 0.02), perceived barriers (p = 0.001), self-efficacy (p = 0.014) and cues to action (p = 0.016). Based on the current study, the intervention based on Health Belief Model can be useful to improve preventive behaviors of Urinary Tract Infection.

Exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon reservoirs have been always time consuming with high risk and high cost. In this regard, assessment of reservoir characterizations and information about spatial distribution of its parameters play an important role in adaptation of suitable strategies for hydrocarbon resources management. There are only few numbers of oil wells cored in every oil field due to high cost, time-consuming process, and other drilling problems. Therefore, it is required to use alternative estimation methods in order to achieve the petro-physical parameter in total space of reservoir. In this research, geostatistical methods have been applied as a new approach to calculate and estimate porosity and permeability of reservoir in one of southwestern oil fields of Iran. The information obtained from 86 wells in one of southwestern oil fields of Iran has been available in this study. Physical parameters of porosity and permeability are vital parameters that should be estimated in studied reservoir. This study indicated that Gaussian Variogram Model is the best model to predict porosity and permeability values in field. Error means of actual values of porosity are equal to 6.9% and for permeability are 11.21% using Gaussian Model. Also, after prediction of porosity and permeability values for field, distribution of these parameters in field was illustrated in two-dimensional and three-dimensional modes besides distribution and location of wells in field in order to determine the best drilling spots and reduce risk of drilling operations.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of imatinib mesylate on cell viability, anti cancer effect through modulation of KAI1/CD82 gene expression in breast cancer MCF-7 cell ***: The effects of imatinib mesylate on cell viability in MCF-7 cell line were assessed using MTT assay and IC_(50) value was determined. GAPDH and KAI1/CD82 were selected as reference and target genes, respectively. Quantitative real time PCR technique was applied for investigation of KAI1/CD82 gene expression in human breast cancer MCF-7 cells. Subsequently, the quantity of KAI1 compared to GAPDH gene expressions were analyzed using the formula; 2^(-DDCt).Results: Imatinib was showed to have a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the viability of MCF-7 cells. CD82/GAPDH gene expression ratios were 1.322 ± 0.030(P > 0.05),2.052 ± 0.200(P < 0.05), 2.151 ± 0.270(P < 0.05) for 10, 20 and 40 mmol/L of imatinib ***: Based on the present data, imatinib mesylate might modulate metastasis by up-regulating KAI1/CD82 gene expression in human breast MCF-7 cancer cell line.

In this paper, the Si(100) substrate was implanted by Ge ions at different doses to study the effect of the preliminary heat treatment on the wet oxidized layer of the Si using Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. We found that the change of the silicon oxide thickness and its morphology under the influence of the Ge dopant is mostly dependent on the damaged surface layer of the Si substrate after ion implantation. By choosing different doses of the implantation and subsequent annealing process, we tried to get different level of the induced damage, enabled us to investigate the role of the pre-heating and subsequent recrystalization of the damaged substrate on the silicon oxidation process under the effect of the implanted Ge ions. By the determination of the effect of these parameters, we can better identify the optimal conditions of getting the oxide layer with proper thickness and morphology.

The Effect of an Educational Program Based on the Health Belief Model on Self-Efficacy among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Referred to the Iranian Diabetes Association in 2014

Background: Patient self-efficacy is one of the most important factors in treating and overcoming disease. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of an educational program based on the health belief model on self-efficacy among patients with type 2 diabetes referred to the Iranian Diabetes Association in 2014. Method: A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted. Eighty patients with type 2 diabetes were selected randomly by the double block sample method. They were then divided into two groups of intervention and control (40 patients in each group) by random allocation. Data were collected by a questionnaire based on the Health Belief Model and self-efficacy. The data were gathered two months after the educational program was held. The educational program was designed on the basis of data collected in the pre-test phase. Then, the educational program was executed for the intervention group in 8 sessions (each 30 minutes) using lectures and an educational booklet. Data analysis was done with Chi-square Test, Pearson’s correlation, Independent samples T-test and paired T-test. The significance level was considered at 0.05. Results: Before intervention, no significant difference was detected between the two groups. However, after intervention all variables were significantly different except for perceived threat. Moreover, there were significant linear relationships between Self-efficacy and all Health Belief Model components after the educational intervention in both groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The educational program based on the health belief model increased self-efficacy in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
