Rectal cancer staging: Multidetector-row computed tomography diagnostic accuracy in assessment of mesorectal fascia invasion

AIM: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of multidetectorrow computed tomography(MDCT) as compared with conventional magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), in identifying mesorectal fascia(MRF) invasion in rectal cancer ***: Ninety-one patients with biopsy proven rectal adenocarcinoma referred for thoracic and abdominal CT staging were enrolled in this study. The contrast-enhanced MDCT scans were performed on a 256 row scanner(ICT, Philips) with the following acquisition parameters: tube voltage 120 KV, tube current 150-300 m As. Imaging data were reviewed as axial and as multiplanar reconstructions(MPRs) images along the rectal tumor axis. MRI study, performed on 1.5 T with dedicated phased array multicoil, included multiplanar T2 and axial T1 sequences and diffusion weighted images(DWI). Axial and MPR CT images independently were compared to MRI and MRF involvement was determined. diagnostic accuracy of both modalities was compared and statistically ***: According to MRI, the MRF was involved in 51 patients and not involved in 40 patients. DWI allowed to recognize the tumor as a focal mass with high signal intensity on high b-value images, compared with the signal of the normal adjacent rectal wall or with the lower tissue signal intensity background. The number of patients correctly staged by the native axial CT images was 71 out of 91(41 with involved MRF; 30 with not involved MRF), while by using the MPR 80 patients were correctly staged(45 with involved MRF; 35 with not involved MRF). Local tumor staging suggested by MDCT agreed with those of MRI, obtaining for CT axial images sensitivity and specificity of 80.4% and 75%, positive predictive value(PPV) 80.4%, negative predictive value(NPV) 75% and accuracy 78%; while performing MPR the sensitivity and specificity increased to 88% and 87.5%, PPV was 90%, NPV 85.36% and accuracy 88%. Parallel Quasi Exhaustive Search of Optimal Asset Allocation for Pension Funds

We present a solution based on a suitable combination of heuristics and parallel processing techniques for finding the best allocation of the financial assets of a pension fund, taking into account all the specific rules of the fund. We compare the values of an objective function computed with respect to a large set (thousands) of possible scenarios for the evolution of the Net Asset Value (NAV) of the share of each asset class in which the financial capital of the fund is invested. Our approach does not depend neither on the model used for the evolution of the NAVs nor on the objective function. In particular, it does not require any linearization or similar approximations of the problem. Although we applied it to a situation in which the number of possible asset classes is limited to few units (six in the specific case), the same approach can be followed also in other cases by grouping asset classes according to their features.

Economic and Environmental Performance of Biowaste-to-energy Technologies for Small-scale Electricity Generation

Electricity is predicted to be the energy vector that will undergo major changes in the future,and a transition would be observed in the resources such as waste and residual biomass that we use to satisfy the energy ***,this study aims to highlight the main economic and environmental performances of different biowaste-to-energy technologies for small-scale electricity generation by comparing the direct combustion of refined vegetable oil obtained from waste cooking oils(thermal pathway),anaerobic digestion of biowaste(biochemical pathway),and gasification of wood residues(thermochemical pathway).The economic analysis is mainly based on personal experiences in the energy sector and shows an overview of the performance in investment of combined heat and power(CHP)systems,ranging from 100 to 500 kW for a period of 20 *** environmental assessment is conducted considering the life-cycle thinking approach using support from the openLCA software,product environmental footprint(PEF)database,and previous studies that have reported environmental inventory data from real industrial cases.

Enlarged pancreas: not always a cancer

Pancreatic fat accumulation has been described with various terms including pancreatic lipomatosis, pancreatic steatosis, fatty replacement, fatty infiltration, fatty pancreas, lipomatous pseudohypertrophy and nonalcoholic fatty pancreas disease. It has been reported to be associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, acute pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and the formation of pancreatic fistula. The real incidence of this condition is still unknown. We report a case of pancreatic steatosis in a non-obese female patient initially diagnosed with a mass in the head of the pancreas. Magnetic resonance imaging（MRI） was carried out to define the characteristics of the pancreatic mass. MRI confirmed the diagnosis of fat pancreas. Enlarged pancreas is not always a cancer, but pancreatic steatosis is characterized by pancreatic enlargement. MRI could give a definite diagnosis of pancreatic steatosis or cancer.

Robust state of charge and state of health estimation for batteries using a novel multi model approach

Estimation of state-of-charge and state-of-health for batteries is one of the most important feature for modern battery management system(BMS).Robust or adaptive methods are the most investigated because a more intelligent BMS could lead to sensible cost reduction of the entire battery *** propose a new robust method,called ERMES(extendible range multi-model estimator),for determining an estimated state-of-charge(SoC),an estimated state-of-health(SoH)and a prediction of uncertainty of the estimates(state-of-uncertainty—SoU),thanks to which it is possible to monitor the validity of the estimates and adjust it,extending the robustness against a wider range of uncertainty,if ***,a finite number of models in state-space form are considered starting from a modified Thevenin battery *** model is characterized by a hypothesis of SoH *** iterated extended Kalman filter(EKF)is then applied to each model in parallel,estimating for each one the SoC state *** errors are then considered to fuse both the estimated SoC and SoH from the bank of EKF,yielding the overall SoC and SoH estimates,*** addition,a figure of uncertainty of such estimates is also provided.

Integration of multi-stage membrane carbon capture processes to coal-fired power plants using highly permeable polymers

Membrane separation systems could be a feasible option as post combustion carbon capture technologies in coal-fired power *** advancement on membrane materials based on microporous super glassy polymers could improve significantly the capture process but the properties of the materials have to guide the design of the separation stage. In this study an advanced hybrid two-stage membrane process employing one of the most permeable polymer known(PIM-1) is retrofitted to a coal fired power plant and the process is analysed in terms of energy requirement and cost performance. The results are based on the use of an in-house detailed membrane module model implemented in UniSim Design~?, the Honeywell process flowsheet simulator. The study indicates the need for advanced configuration in order for highly permeable membranes to be competitive with more mature technologies in terms of capture cost. The effect of ageing and impurities on the material is also investigated in order to predict the decline in process performance over time and suggest a timeproof design.

This research describes a quantitative,rapid,and low-cost methodology for debris flow susceptibility evaluation at the basin scale using open-access data and *** proposed approach can aid decision makers in land management and territorial planning,by first screening for areas with a higher debris flow *** environmental predisposing factors,namely,bedrock lithology,fracture network,quaternary deposits,slope inclination,and hydrographic network,were selected as independent parameters and their mutual interactions were described and quantified using the Rock Engineering System(RES)*** each parameter,specific indexes were proposed,aiming to provide a final synthetic and representative index of debris flow susceptibility at the basin *** methodology was tested in four basins located in the Upper Susa Valley(NW Italian Alps)where debris flow events are the predominant natural *** proposed matrix can represent a useful standardized tool,universally applicable,since it is independent of type and characteristic of the basin.
