CONSPECTUS:Over the past 30 years,the engineering of plasmonic resonances at the nanoscale has progressed dramatically,with important contributions in a variety of different fields,including chemistry,physics,biology,engineering,and ***,heavy optical losses related to the use of noble metals for the fabrication of plasmonic structures hindered their application in various ***,an answer to these long-lasting issues emerged in the use of lattice plasmon resonances(LPRs,also called surface lattice resonances),bringing new excitement in the field of ***,the organization of plasmonic nanoparticles into ordered arrays enables far-field coupling of the scattered light exploiting the diffraction modes of the array,generating plasmonic resonances with bandwidths as narrow as a few nanometers,corresponding to an increase of over 10-fold in the quality factors compared to localized plasmon *** such,LPRs offer new opportunities to harness light−matter interactions at the nanoscale,while generating renewed interest in the self-assembly of colloidal metal nanoparticles,as a scalable approach to the preparation of such plasmonic *** self-assembly emerged as one of the most versatile approaches,being compatible with soft-lithographic techniques such as nanoimprint lithography and amenable to a variety of materials,colloids,and *** self-assembly additionally allows the preparation of arrays where the repeating units are composed of multiple self-assembled nanoparticles(i.e.,plasmonic clusters).In this system,near-field coupling can be finely tuned,thereby showing promising results in biosensing,catalysis,or plasmonic *** this Account,we review the preparation of ordered arrays of clusters of plasmonic *** present various aspects involved in the templated self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles,with the aim of achieving at the same time close-packed structures within each cavity

Transformation of leather waste into microwave-activated and N-doped carbon for Li-S batteries

The use of carbon from waste biomass has the potential to buffer the drawbacks of Li-S batteries and improve their overall performance. Chrome-Tanned-LeatherShavings(CTLS) are undesirable wastes, highly available for transformation into porous carbon. Microwave activation is an efficient state-of-the-art procedure to obtain unique porous structures and nitrogen incorporation can improve the performance of porous carbons. This study proposes the transformation of CTLS into a microwave activated porous carbon, and then was modified to introduce nitrogen. A microporous activated carbon with a specific surface area of 556 m2g-1 with honeycomb-like structure was obtained. Both urea thermal decomposition and ethanolamine impregnation improves the nitrogen and amine presence of surface groups. However,the results indicated that only urea treatment was effective in improving the initial capacity of the cell(1363 mAhg-1), which is probably linked with the sorption of long-chain polysulfides. This investigation confirms that it is possible to obtain carbon materials from CTLS, for use as sulfur-host cathodes in Li-S batteries, and improve their performance with urea thermal decomposition. Furthermore, a Radial basis function neural network was fitted to provide statistical support to the experimental results. The trained model corroborated the importance of nitrogen content of the carbons in the discharge capacity of the cells.

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNGCs). However, the use of tNGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Spatial Distribution of Nymphs Populations Bactericera cockerelli Sulc in Tomato Crops(Physalis ixocarpa Brot)

Tomato crops(Physalis ixocarpa Brot.)are produced in almost all Mexico,part of the United States and Central *** the tomato production has suffered economic losses of 70%to 80%due the presence of yellowing and floral abortion,whose causal agent has been attributed to the presence of phytoplasma;an insect vector of these phytoplasma is Bactericera cockerrelli *** control of this psyllid has lacked effectiveness because their spatial distribution is unknown within tomato *** study aimed to determine the spatial distribution of populations of nymphs of *** in four tomato plots,the determination of the spatial distribution was performed by means of *** experimental semivariogram was determined to adjust to a theoretical model(spherical,exponential or Gaussian)through the program Variowin 2.2,the adjustment was validated with the method of cross-validation and aggregation maps of the pest were obtained through Kriging with Surfer 9.0 *** short-term time-space stability of the pest was determined through the tests Crámer-von *** results showed that populations of nymphs of *** have a distribution of aggregate type,which was corroborated by density *** are not present in 100%of the surface of the experimental plots,which helps to direct control measures on specific areas of infestation.

Decellularized natural bladder matrices(neobladders)represent an exciting means to regenerate the bladder following bladder cancer-associated *** this study,we compare the evolution of decellularized matrices with recellularized matrices by seeding it with human adiposederived mesenchymal stem cells(ADSC)after implantation following partial cystectomy in *** discovered significant anatomical differences since 10 days after neobladder implantation with the ADSC-containing matrices promoting a significant recovery of mature p63-and cytokeratin 7-positive *** also discovered significantly induced expression of the vimentin mesoderm marker in the submucosal layer in ADSC-seeded ***,we found a higher expression of smooth muscle actin in transversal and longitudinal smooth muscle layers with ADSC-seeded ***,ADSC also showed increased vascularization and nerve innervation of the neobladder as determined by the distribution of CD31 and S100b reactivity,*** believe that ADSC and their paracrine-acting pro-regenerative secretome within decellularized matrices represent an efficient bladder substitution strategy;however,we require a fuller understanding of the mechanisms involved before clinical studies can begin.
