Population-based affective-disorder-related biomedical/biophysical multi-hyper-morbidity across the lifespan:A 16-year population study

We analyzed the distributional patterns of95 selected species of leptosporangiate ferns inhabiting the Mexican Mountain Component, using grid-cells of one geographical degree as unit areas,applying endemism indices and richness and beta diversity *** data were obtained from several herbaria and specialized *** grid-cells appear to be important for fern species richness, as they contain 35 to 49 *** gridcells are located in the sierra Madre Oriental(sMO),Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt(TMVB) and the sierra Madre del sur(sMs).Mean richness by latitudinal belts of one degree showed that the belts with highest values are related to the TMVB and sMs.A total of 13grid-cells were recognized as important from theperspective of endemism; most of them are located also in the sMO, TMVB and *** richest gridcells coincided with one of the main centres of endemism for ferns obtained in this study, located in the convergence of the southern part of the sMO, the eastern portion of the TMVB and the northern part of the sMs, reflecting the high humidity existing on the mountain slopes facing the Gulf of *** important grid-cells recognized from richness and endemism analyses coincide with Mexican Natural Protected *** beta diversity analysis showed a low degree of similarity among grid-cells, implying a high species replacement, as the result of environmental heterogeneity occurring in the Mexican mountain *** the other hand, the spatial analysis suggested a pattern of phytogeographical regionalization comprising twomain areas: the Mexican Transition Zone and the Mexican Central *** play an important role in the Mexican biodiversity and contributing to the beta diversity of Mexico.

Investigation on reversible pump turbine flow structures and associated pressure field characteristics under different guide vane openings

The use of reversible pump turbines(RPT) within pumped storage power plants goes with prolonged periods of off-design operating conditions, which leads to the onset of operating mode-dependent instabilities. In order to decrease the gravity of RPT flow instabilities and associated damages or even completely eliminate them, a deep understanding of its onset and development mechanism is needed. In line with this, the present study seeks to numerically investigate the onset and development mechanism of RPT unsteady flow structures as well as the evolutional characteristics of associated pressure pulsations throughout the RPT complete flow passage, under off-design conditions for three GVOs namely 17, 21, and 25 mm. The study results showed that low torque operating conditions and associated vaneless space back flow structures were the trigger of flow unsteadiness onset within the RPT vaneless space, the instabilities which grew to cause the s-shape characteristics appearance. Moreover, the runner flow unsteadiness was found to decrease with the GVO increase. On the other hand, the GVO increase worsened the pressure pulsation levels within RPT flow zones, where pressure pulsations within the vaneless space and flow zones in its vicinities were found to be the most sensitive to GVO changes.

Enhancing the response of CAlUX and CAFlUX cell bioassays for quantitative detection of dioxin-like compounds

Reporter genes produce a protein product in transfected cells that can be easily measured in intact or lysed cells and they have been extensively used in numerous basic and applied research *** the past 10 years,reporter gene assays have been widely accepted and used for analysis of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and related dioxin-like compounds in various types of matrices,such as biological,environmental,food and feed samples,given that high-resolution instrumental analysis techniques are impractical for large-scale screening *** most sensitive cell-based reporter gene bioassay systems developed are the mechanism-based CAlUX(Chemically Activated luciferase Expression) and CAFlUX(Chemically Activated Fluorescent Expression) bioassays,which utilize recombinant cell lines containing stably transfected dioxin(AhR) responsive firefly luciferase or enhanced green fluorescent protein(EGFP) reporter genes,*** the current CAlUX and CAFlUX bioassays are very sensitive,increasing their lower limit of sensitivity,magnitude of response and dynamic range for chemical detection would significantly increase their utility,particularly for those samples that contain low levels of dioxin-like HAHs(i.e.,serum) .In this study,we report that the addition of modulators of cell signaling pathways or modification of cell culture conditions results in significant improvement in the magnitude and overall responsiveness of the existing CAlUX and CAFlUX cell bioassays.

Optimization of Adaptive Transit signal Priority Using Parallel Genetic Algorithm

Optimization of adaptive traffic signal timing is one of the most complex problems in traffic control systems. This paper presents an adaptive transit signal priority （TsP） strategy that applies the parallel genetic algorithm （PGA） to optimize adaptive traffic signal control in the presence of TsP. The method can optimize the phase plan, cycle length, and green splits at isolated intersections with consideration for the performance of both the transit and the general vehicles. A VIssIM （VIsual sIMulation） simulation testbed was developed to evaluate the performance of the proposed PGA-based adaptive traffic signal control with TsP. The simulation results show that the PGA-based optimizer for adaptive TsP outperformed the fully actuated NEMA control in all test cases. The results also show that the PGA-based optimizer can produce TsP timing plans that benefit the transit vehicles while minimizing the impact of TsP on the general vehicles.

Context-dependent regulation of pectoralis myostatin and lipid transporters by temperature and photoperiod in dark-eyed juncos

A prominent example of seasonal phenotypic flexibility is the winter increase in thermogenic capacity （=summit metabolism, Msurn） in small birds, which is often accompanied by increases in pectoralis muscle mass and lipid catabolic capacity. Temperature or photoperiod may be drivers of the winter phenotype, but their relative impacts on muscle remodeling or lipid transport pathways are little known. We examined photoperiod and temperature effects on pectoralis muscle expres- sion of myostatin, a muscle growth inhibitor, and its tolloid-like protein activators （Tll-1 and Tll- 2）, and sarcolemmal and intracellular lipid transporters in dark-eyed juncos Junco hyemalis. We acclimated winter juncos to four temperature （3~C or 24~C） and photoperiod [short-day （sD） = 8l：16D; long-day （lD） = 16l：8D] treatments. We found that myostatin, Tll-I, Tll-2, and lipid transporter mRNA expression and myostatin protein expression did not differ among treatments, but treatments interacted to influence lipid transporter proteinexpression. Fatty acid translocase （FAT/CD36） levels were higher for cold sD than for other treatments. Membrane-bound fatty acid binding protein （FABPpm） levels, however, were higher for the cold lD treatment than for cold sD and warm lD treatments. Cytosolic fatty acid binding protein （FABPc） levels were higher on lD than on sD at 3℃, but higher on sD than on lD at 24℃. Cold temperature groups showed upregulation of these lipid transporters, which could contribute to elevated Msum compared to warm groups on the same photoperiod. However, interactions of temperature or photoperiod effects on muscle remodeling and lipid transport pathways suggest that these effects are context-dependent.
