The rates at which birds use energy may have profound effects on fitness, thereby influencing physiology, behavior, ecology and evolution. Comparisons of standardized metabolic rates （e.g., lower and upper limits of metabolic power output） present a method for elucidating the effects of ecological and evolutionary factors on the interface between physiology and life history in birds. In this paper we review variation in avian metabolic rates [basal metabolic rate （BMR; minimum normothermic metabolic rate）, summit metabolic rate （Msum; maximal thermoregulatory metabolic rate）, and maximal metabolic rate （MMR; maximal exercise metabolic rate）], the factors associated with this variation, the evidence for functional links between these metabolic traits, and the ecological and evolutionary significance of avian metabolic diversity. Both lower and upper limits to metabolic power production are phenotypically flexible traits, and vary in association with numerous ecological and evolutionary factors. For both inter- and intraspecific comparisons, lower and upper limits to metabolic power production are generally upregulated in response to energetically demanding conditions and downregulated when energetic demands are relaxed, or under conditions of energetic scarcity. Positive correlations have been documented between BMR, Msum and MMR in some, but not all studies on birds, providing partial support for the idea of a functional link between lower and upper limits to metabolic power production, but more intraspecific studies are needed to determine the robustness of this conclusion. Correlations between BMR and field metabolic rate （or daily energy expenditure） in birds are variable, suggesting that the linkage between these traits is subject to behavioral adjustment, and studies of the relationship between field and maximal metabolic rates are lacking. In the blossoming field of Cd-free semiconductor quantum dots(QDs),ternary Ⅰ-Ⅲ-VI QDs have received increasing attention due to the ease of the environmentally friendly synthesis of high-quality materials in water,their high photoluminescence(Pl)quantum yields(QYs)in the red and near infrared(NIR)region,and their inherently low ***,their oxygen-insensitive long Pl lifetimes of up to several hundreds of nanoseconds close a gap for applications exploiting the compound-specific parameter Pl *** overcome the lack of reproducible synthetic methodologies and to enable a design-based control of their Pl properties,we assessed and modelled the synthesis of high-quality MPA-capped Aglns2/Zns(Als/Zns)*** refined parameters included reaction time,temperature,Ag:In ratio,s:In ratio,Zn:In ratio,MPA:ln ratio,and pH using a design-of-experiment *** for the optimization was provided by mathematical models developed for the application-relevant Pl parameters,maximum Pl wavelength,QY,and Pl lifetime as well as the elemental composition in terms of Ag:ln:Zn *** these experimental data-based models,MPA:ln and Ag:ln ratios and pH values were identified as the most important synthesis parameters for Pl control and an insight into the connection of these parameters could be ***,the experimental conditions to synthetize QDs with tunable emission and high QY were *** excellent agreement between the predicted and experimentally found Pl features confirmed the reliability of our methodology for the rational design of high quality Als/Zns QDs with defined Pl *** approach can be straightforwardly extended to other ternary and quaternary QDs and to doped QDs.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars were prestressed for the structural strengthening of 8 T-shaped rein-forced concrete (RC) beams of a 21-year-old bridge in China. The ultimate bearing capacity of the existing bridge after retrofit was discussed on the basis of concrete structures theory. The flexural strengths of RC beams strengthened with CFRP bars were controlled by the failure of concrete in compression and a prestressing method was applied in the retrofit. The field construction processes of strengthening with CFRP bars-including grouting cracks, cutting groove, grouting epoxy and embedding CFRP bars, surface treating, banding with the U-type CFRP sheets, releasing external prestressed steel tendons-were introduced in detail. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of this strengthening method, field tests using vehicles as live load were applied before and after the retrofit. The test results of deflection and concrete strain of the T-shaped beams with and without strengthening show that the capacity of the repaired bridge, including the bending strength and stiffness, is enhanced. The measurements of crack width also indicate that this strengthening method can enhance the durability of bridges. Therefore, the proposed strengthening technology is feasible and effective.

Prediction of the response of cancer patients to different treatments and identification of biomarkers of drug response are two major goals of individualized ***,we developed a deep learning framework called TINDl,completely trained on preclinical cancer cell lines(CCls),to predict the response of cancer patients to different *** utilizes a tissue-informed normalization to account for the tissue type and cancer type of the tumors and to reduce the statistical discrepancies between CCls and patient ***,by making the deep learning black box interpretable,this model identifies a small set of genes whose expression levels are predictive of drug response in the trained model,enabling identification of biomarkers of drug *** data from two large databases of CCls and cancer tumors,we showed that this model can distinguish between sensitive and resistant tumors for 10(out of 14)drugs,outperforming various other machine learning *** addition,our small interfering RNA(siRNA)knockdown experiments on 10 genes identified by this model for one of the drugs(tamoxifen)confirmed that tamoxifen sensitivity is substantially influenced by all of these genes in MCF7 cells,and seven of these genes in T47D ***,genes implicated for multiple drugs pointed to shared mechanism of action among drugs and suggested several important signaling *** summary,this study provides a powerful deep learning framework for prediction of drug response and identification of biomarkers of drug response in *** code can be accessed at https://***/ddhostallero/tindl.
