Heterosis in locally adapted sorghum genotypes and potential of hybrids for increased productivity in contrasting environments in Ethiopia

Increased productivity in sorghum has been achieved in the developed world using *** their yield advantage,introduced hybrids have not been adopted in Ethiopia due to the lack of adaptive traits,their short plant stature and small grain *** study was conducted to investigate hybrid performance and the magnitude of heterosis of locally adapted genotypes in addition to introduced hybrids in three contrasting environments in *** total,139 hybrids,derived from introduced seed parents crossed with locally adapted genotypes and introduced r lines,were ***,the hybrids matured earlier than the adapted parents,but had higher grain yield,plant height,grain number and grain weight in all *** lowland adapted hybrids displayed a mean better parent heterosis(BPH) of19%,equating to 1160 kg ha-1and a 29% mean increase in grain yield,in addition to increased plant height and grain weight,in comparison to the hybrids derived from the introduced r *** mean BPH for grain yield for the highland adapted hybrids was 16% in the highland and 52%in the intermediate environment equating to 698 kg ha-1and 2031 kg ha-1,respectively,in addition to increased grain *** magnitude of heterosis observed for each hybrid group was related to the genetic distance between the parental *** majority of hybrids also showed superiority over the standard check *** general,hybrids from locally adapted genotypes were superior in grain yield,plant height and grain weight compared to the high parents and introduced hybrids indicating the potential for hybrids to increase productivity while addressing farmers' required traits.

The yield of cereal crops such as sorghum(Sorghum bicolor ***)depends on the distribution of crop-heads in varying branching ***,counting the head number per unit area is critical for plant breeders to correlate with the genotypic variation in a specific breeding ***,measuring such phenotypic traitsmanually is an extremely labor-intensive process and suffers from low efficiency and human ***,the process is almost infeasible for large-scale breeding plantations or *** learning-based approaches like deep convolutional neural network(CNN)based object detectors are promising tools for efficient object detection and ***,a significant limitation of such deep learningbased approaches is that they typically require a massive amount of hand-labeled images for training,which is still a tedious ***,we propose an active learning inspired weakly supervised deep learning framework for sorghum head detection and counting from UAV-based *** demonstrate that it is possible to significantly reduce human labeling effort without compromising final model performance(r^(2)between human count and machine count is 0.88)by using a semitrained CNN model(i.e.,trained with limited labeled data)to perform synthetic *** addition,we also visualize key features that the network *** improves trustworthiness by enabling users to better understand and trust the decisions that the trained deep learning model makes.

Genetic variation ranging from single-nucleotide polymorphisms to large structural variants (SVs) can cause variation of gene content among individuals within the same species. There is an increasing appreciation that a single reference genome is insufficient to capture the full landscape of genetic diversity of a species. Pan-genome analysis offers a platform to evaluate the genetic diversity of a species via investigation of its entire genome repertoire. Although a recent wave of pan-genomic studies has shed new light on crop diversity and improvement using advanced sequencing technology, the potential applications of crop pan-genomics in crop improvement are yet to be fully exploited. In this review, we highlight the progress achieved in understanding crop pan?genomics, discuss biological activities that cause SVs, review important agronomical traits affected by SVs, and present our perspective on the application of pan-genomics in crop improvement.

This paper originates a discussion on dimensional analysis and scaling in magnetically assisted fluidized beds. Basic examination of process variables, merging mechanical and magnetic units, allows the conversion of mixed sets of variables into unified terms representing surface forces as effects of the fields contributing to the assisted fluidization behaviour. This transformation is termed ＂pressure transform＂ since the new variables are all characteristic pressures generated by three basic fields： gravity, magnetic and fluid flow. This approach addresses the physical basis in terms of dimensionless groups rather than formal algebraic manipulations pertinent to classical dimensional analysis. Basic dimensionless group termed granular magnetic Bond number is introduced as the ratio of characteristic pressures of gravity and of magnetic field. This analysis also provides a set of named dimensionless numbers characterizing magnetic field assisted fluidization such as Filippov number, rosensweig number, Kwauk number and Siegell number, derived as ratios of characteristic pressures.

The article presents an effort to create dimensionless scaling correlations of the overall bed porosity in the case of magnetically assisted fluidization in a tapered vessel with external transverse magnetic field. This is a stand of portion of new branch in the magnetically assisted fluidization recently created concerning employment of tapered vessels. Dimensional analysis based on ＂pressure transform＂ of the initial set of variables and involving the magnetic granular Bond number has been applied to develop scaling relationships of dimensionless groups representing ratios of pressures created by the fluid flow, gravity and the magnetic field over an elementary volume of the fluidized bed. Special attention has been paid on the existing data correlations developed for non-magnetic beds and the links to the new ones especially developed for tapered magnetic counterparts. A special dimensionless variable Xp = （Ar△Dbt）1/3√rgMQ combining Archimedes and rosensweig numbers has been conceived for porosity correlation. Data correlations have been performed by power-law, exponential decay and asymptotic functions with analysis of their adequacies and accuracies of approximation.

Magnetically stabilized beds are packed beds subjected to fluid-driven deformation and controlled by magnetically induced interparticle forces. This paper deals with magnetically stabilized beds as deformable porous media and describes their application in dust filtration. The richardson-Zaki scaling law, U/Ut = ε^n describes the field controlled bed expansion via the exponent n, that yields a porosity-dependent flow length scale dc = dpε^n. The paper addresses two issues：（i） deformation characteristics by assuming homogeneous bed expansion and a definition of bed variable flow length scale; （ii） dust filtration characteristics such as filter coefficient, specific deposit and filtration efficiency expressed in terms of the variable flow length scale and illustrated by experimental data.
