Neurotherapy for chronic headache following traumatic brain injury

Background: Chronic headache following traumatic brain injury(TBI) sustained in military service, while common, is highly challenging to treat with existing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, and it may be complicated by co-morbid posttraumatic stress. recently, a novel form of brainwave-based intervention known as the Flexyx Neurotherapy System(FNS), which involves minute pulses of electromagnetic energy stimulation of brainwave activity, has been suggested as a means to address symptoms of TBI. This study reports on a clinical series of patients with chronic headache following service-connected TBI treated with ***: Nine veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq with moderate to severe chronic headaches following service-connected TBI complicated by posttraumatic stress symptoms were treated in 20 individual FNS sessions at the Brain Wellness and Biofeedback Center of Washington(in Bethesda, Maryland, USA). They periodically completed measures including the Brief Pain Inventory-Headache(BPI-HA), previous week worst and average pain ratings, the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Military version(PCL-M), and an individual treatment session numerical rating scale(NrS) for the degree of cognitive dysfunction. Data analyses included beginning-to-end of treatment t-test comparisons for the BPI-HA, PCL-M, and cognitive dysfunction NrS. results: All beginning-to-end of treatment t-test comparisons for the BPI-HA, PCL-M, and cognitive dysfunction NrS indicated statistically significant decreases. All but one participant experienced a reduction in headaches along with reductions in posttraumatic stress and perceived cognitive dysfunction, with a subset experiencing the virtual elimination of headaches. One participant obtained modest headache relief but no improvements in posttraumatic stress or cognitive dysfunction. Conclusions: FNS may be a potentially efficacious treatment for chronic posttraumatic headache sustained in military service.

The disease burden of diverticulitis is high across inpatient and outpatient settings,and the prevalence of diverticulitis has ***,patients with acute diverticulitis were admitted routinely for intravenous antibiotics and many had urgent surgery with colostomy or elective surgery after only a few *** recent studies have challenged the standards of how acute and recurrent diverticulitis are managed,and many clinical practice guidelines(CPGs)have pivoted to recommend outpatient management and individualized decisions about *** the rates of diverticulitis hospitalizations and operations are increasing in the United States,suggesting there is a disconnect from or delay in adoption of CPGs across the spectrum of diverticular *** this review,we propose approaching diverticulitis care from a population level to understand the gaps between contemporary studies and real-world practice and suggest strategies to implement and improve future care.

An analysis of Chinese Super League partial results

Some of the history of soccer/world football in China is presented. Then consideration turns to the 2008 Chinese Super League. It has 16 teams. The results from the first half of the season, i.e. 15 rounds, are studied. The response of interest for a specific game is whether the home team won, tied or lost, who the home team was, and who the opponent was. The response is ordinal-valued. A generalized linear model is fit and then, given the remaining fixtures, used to predict the final standings of the season. Other explanatories, such as round number, are considered for inclusion in the model. Simulation is employed to estimate probabilities of interest.

Physical Characteristics Explain Ball-Carrying Capability in Sub-Elite rugby Union Players

Purpose The aims of the present study were two-fold:(i)to investigate the relationship between physical characteristics and the game statistics associated with ball-carrying capability amongst sub-elite rugby union players,and(ii)to predict the level of change in these physical characteristics required to improve the associated game statistic via regression *** Thirty-eight senior professional players(forwards,n=22;backs,n=16)were assessed for body mass(BM),back squat(BS)single-repetition maximum(1rM)normalised to BM(1rM/BM),10 m sprint velocity(S10),10 m sprint momentum(SM10),and the game statistics from 22 games within the 2019/20 rFU Championship *** relationship between these measures and the predicted level of change in a physical measure required to improve the total number of the associated game statistic by one were assessed by Pearson’s correlation coefficient and simple regression *** In forwards,an~11.5%reduction in BM,an~11.8%improvement in BS 1rM/BM,or an~11.5%increase in S10 was required to improve the game statistics associated with ball-carrying *** backs,a~19.3%increase in BM or a~15.6%improvement in SM10 was *** These findings demonstrate that improvements in lower-body relative strength,acceleration performance,and position-specific alterations in body mass are required to maximise the ball-carrying capability and therefore match outcome of sub-elite rugby union players.

rapid strep testing in children with recently treated streptococcal pharyngitis

Importance:The use of the rapid antigen-detection test(rADT)has become the standard of care in the early diagnosis of group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus(GAS)*** has been expressed over increased false positives when the child had been treated recently for GAS pharyngitis,resulting in over use of ***:To determine if the false positive rate for rADT is increased in children recently treated for GAS ***:We conducted a prospective study to evaluate 300 children from a private practice with acute pharyngitis who were treated for GAS pharyngitis within the preceding 28 days(study group)compared to 306 children of comparable age who had not been previously treated(control group).rADT and throat culture were performed on all children presenting with signs and symptoms of acute *** false positive and false negative rates were determined and compared in both ***:The false positive rate of 11.5%(23/200)in the study group was significantly higher than the false positive rate of 0 in the control *** positives were more likely to occur in younger ***:These data would indicate that while rADT is reliable in most children,it can lead to over treatment in children who have been recently treated for *** children treated in the preceding 28 days for GAS pharyngitis,the presence of infection should be determined with a throat culture *** based on a positive rADT should be reserved for children not recently treated for GAS pharyngitis.
