Can Video Conferencing Be as Easy as Telephoning?—A Home Healthcare Case Study

In comparison with almost universal adoption of telephony and mobile technologies in modern day healthcare, video conferencing has yet to become a ubiquitous clinical tool. Currently telehealth services are faced with a bewildering range of video conferencing software and hardware choices. This paper provides a case study in the selection of video conferencing services by the Flinders University Telehealth in the Home trial (FTH Trial) to support healthcare in the home. Using pragmatic methods, video conferencing solutions available on the market were assessed for usability, reliability, cost, compatibility, interoperability, performance and privacy considerations. The process of elimination through which the eventual solution was chosen, the selection criteria used for each requirement and the corresponding results are described. The resulting product set, although functional, had restricted ability to directly connect with systems used by healthcare providers elsewhere in the system. This outcome illustrates the impact on one small telehealth provider of the broader struggles between competing video conferencing vendors. At stake is the ability to communicate between healthcare organizations and provide public access to healthcare. Comparison of the current state of the video conferencing market place with the evolution of the telephony system reveals that video conferencing still has a long way to go before it can be considered as easy to use as the telephone. Health organizations that are concerned to improve access and quality of care should seek to influence greater standardization and interoperability though cooperation with one another, the private sector, international organizations and by encouraging governments to play a more active role in this sphere.

Ceramics of the composition BaBiO_(3)(BB)were sintered in oxygen to obtain a single phase with monoclinic I2/m symmetry as suggested by high-resolution X-ray diffraction.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of bismuth in two valence states—3þand 5þ.Optical spectroscopy showed presence of a direct bandgap at-2.2 eV and a possible indirect bandgap at-0.9 *** combined with determination of the activation energy for conduction of 0.25 eV,as obtained from ac impedance spectroscopy,suggested that a polaron-mediated conduction mechanism was prevalent in *** BB ceramics were crushed,mixed with BaTiO_(3)(BT),and sintered to obtain BT–BB solid *** the ceramics had tetragonal symmetry and exhibited a normal ferroelectric-like dielectric *** ac impedance and optical spectroscopy,it was shown that resistivity values of BT–BB were orders of magnitude higher than BT or BB alone,indicating a change in the fundamental defect equilibrium conditions.A shift in the site occupancy of Bi to the A-site is proposed to be the mechanism for the increased electrical resistivity.

plant responses to drought are regulated by complex genetic and epigenetic networks leading to rapid reprogramming of plant growth, miRNAs have been widely indicated as key players in the regulation of growth and development. The role of miRNAs in drought response was investigated in young leaves of Brachypodium dis- tachyon, a drought-tolerant monocot model species. Adopting an in vivo drought assay, shown to cause a dramatic reduction in leaf size, mostly due to reduced cell expansion, small RNA libraries were produced from proliferating and expanding leaf cells. Next-generation sequencing data were analyzed using an in-house bioinformatics pipeline allowing the identification of 66 annotated miRNA genes and 122 new high confidence predictions greatly expand- ing the number of known Brachypodium miRNAs. In addition, we identified four TAS3 loci and a large number of siRNA-producing loci that show characteristics suggesting that they may represent young miRNA genes. Most miR- NAs showed a high expression level, consistent with their involvement in early leaf development and cell identity. proliferating and expanding leaf cells respond differently to drought treatment and differential expression analyses suggest novel evidence for an miRNA regulatory network controlling cell division in both normal and stressed condi-tions and demonstrate that drought trigger a genetic reprogramming of leaf growth in which miRNAs are deeply involved.

Background: previous research in both calves and other species has suggested n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids(pUFA) and β-glucans may have positive effects on immune function. This experiment measured performance,behaviour, metabolite and immunological responses to pre-weaning supplementation of dairy bull calves with n-3 pUFA in the form of fish oil and β-glucans derived from seaweed extract. 44 Holstein Friesian bull calves, aged 13.7± 2.5 d and weighing 48.0 ± 5.8 kg were artificially reared using an electronic feeding system. Each calf was offered5 L(120 g/L) per day of milk replacer(MR) and assigned to one of four treatments included in the MR,(1) Control(CON);(2) 40 g n-3 pUFA per day(FO);(3) 1 g β-glucans per day(GL) and(4) 40 g n-3 pUFA per day & 1 g/d β-glucans(FOGL) in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Milk replacer and concentrate was offered from d 0–62(pre-weaning),while concentrate provision continued for a further 31 d post-weaning period. Individual daily feed intake and feeding behaviour was recorded throughout, while bodyweight and blood analyte data were collected at regular ***: Overall mean concentrate DMI from d 0–93 was 1.39, 1.27, 1.00 and 0.72 kg/d for CON, FO, GL and FOGL calves, respectively(SEM = 0.037;p pplemented with GL were significantly lighter(p pasture(d 93) than un-supplemented calves, with a similar effect(p pared to un-supplemented contemporaries. Supplementation with GL reduced the number of unrewarded visits where milk was not consumed(p pplementation with FO increased mean drinking speed(p pplementation with GL resulted in greater concentrations of haptoglobin(p = 0.034), greater serum osmolality(p = 0.021) and lower lymphocyte levels(p = 0.027).
