Aim： To identify possible risk factors for erectile dysfunction （ED） after transurethral resection of prostate （TURP） for benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH）. Methods： Between March 1999 and March 2004, 629 patients underwent TURP in our department for the treatment of symptomatic BPH. All patients underwent transrectal ultrasound examination. In addition, the flow rate, urine residue, International Prostate Symptom Score （IPSS） and quality of life （QOL） were recorded for those who presented without a catheter. Finally, the erectile function of the patient was evaluated according to the International Index of Erectile Function Instrument （IIEF-5） questionnaire. It was determined that ED existed where there was a total score of less than 21. The flow rate, IPSS and QOL assessment were performed at 3 and 6 months post-treatment. The IIEF-5 assessment was repeated at a 6-month follow-up. A logistic regression analysis was used to identify potential risk factors for ED. Results： At baseline, 522 （83 %） patients answered the IIEF-5 questionnaire. The mean patient age was （63.7 ± 9.7） years. The ED rate was 65%. After 6 months, 459 （88%） out of the 522 patients returned the IIEF questionnaire. The rest of the group was excluded from the statistical analysis. Six months after TURP, the rate of patients reporting ED increased to 77 %. Statistical analysis revealed that the only important factors associated with newly reported ED after TURP were diabetes mellitus （P = 0.003, r = 3.67） and observed intraoperative capsular perforation （P = 0.02, r = 1.12）. Conclusion： The incidence of postoperative, newly reported ED after TURP was 12%. Risk factors for its occurrence were diabetes mellitus and intraoperative capsular perforation. （Asian j Androl 2006 jan; 8： 69-74）

Recently, Zhang et al.(2019) have managed to provide abundant evidence to support long-held theories regarding mechanisms of inbreeding depression and potential effects of heterosis that are likely to have a considerable impact on potato breeding in the future (Figure 1). despite its large genetic variation regarding yield, harvest index, and water use efficiency, potato breeding has attained only negligible advances in the most important breeding goals such as yield, tuber quality, and abiotic stress tolerance, and only modest progress in pathogen resistance. This low level of improvement is clearly due to the complexity of breeding a heterozygous tetraploid outbreeder rather than to the lack of genetic potential available in wild and cultivated material. In contrast, breeding at the diploid level, in particular in combination with self-compatibility, will allow the fixation of beneficial alleles to homozygosity.

Chemiluminescence detection was developed as an alternative to amperometric detection for glucose analysis in a portable, microfluidicsbased continuous glucose monitoring system. Amperometric detection allows easy determination of hydrogen peroxide, a product of the glucose oxidasecatalyzed reaction of glucose with oxygen, by oxidation at a microelectrode. However, （micro）electrodes in direct contact with physiological sample are subject to electrode fouling, which leads to signal drift, decreased reproducibility and shortened detector lifetimes. Moreover, there are a few species present in the body （e.g. ascorbic acid, uric acid） which can undergo oxidation at the same applied potential as hydrogen peroxide. These species can thus inter- fere with the glucose measurement, reducing detection specificity. The rationale for exploring chemiluminescence as opposed to amperometric detection is thus to attempt to improve the lifetime and reproducibility of glucose analysis for monitoring purposes, while reducing interference caused by other chemicals in the body. The study reported here represents a first step in this direction, namely the realization of a microfluidic device with integrated silicon photodiode for chemiluminescence detection of glucose. This microflow device uses a chaotic mixing approach to perform enzymatic conversion of glucose, followed by reaction of the hydrogen peroxide produced with luminol to produce light at 425 nm. The chemil reaction is catalyzed by horseradish peroxidase in the presence of iodophenol. The performance of the fabricated chip was characterized to establish optimal reaction conditions with respect to sample and reagent flow rates, pH, and concentrations. A linear calibra- tion curve was obtained for current response as a function of glucose concentration in the clinically relevant range between 2 and 10 mM, with a sensitivity of 39 pA/mM （R = 0.9963, one device, n = 3） and a limit of detection of 230 ktM （S/N - 3）.
