chemical imaging based on mid-infrared(MIR)spectroscopic contrast is an important technique with a myriad of applications,including biomedical imaging and environmental *** MIR cameras,however,lack performance and are much less affordable than mature Si-based devices,which operate in the visible and nearinfrared ***,we demonstrate fast MIR chemical imaging through non-degenerate two-photon absorption(NTA)in a standard Si-based charge-coupled device(ccD).We show that wide-field MIR images can be obtained at 100 ms exposure times using picosecond pulse energies of only a few femtojoules per pixel through NTA directly on the ccD *** this on-chip approach does not rely on phase matching,it is alignment-free and does not necessitate complex postprocessing of the *** emphasize the utility of this technique through chemically selective MIR imaging of polymers and biological samples,including MIR videos of moving targets,physical processes and live nematodes.

BAcKGROUND:The presence of dual pathology can cause diagnostic dilemmas. We present a case of adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater with concurrent amiodarone hepatotoxicity. METHODS:Painless jaundice associated with a palpable gallbladder was investigated clinically,radiologically endoscopically and via liver biopsy. RESULTS:Liver biopsy showed amiodarone hepatotoxicity Endoscopic biopsy identified an ampullary adenoma However,the endoscopic ultrasound and intra-operative findings suggested a malignancy,which was confirmed postoperatively. cONcLUSIONS:While the classic findings of courvoisier’s Law are borne out in this case,the etiology of jaundice is twofold. Although dual pathology is uncommon it should always be considered.

As near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS)broadens its application area to diferent age and diseasegroups,motion artifacts in the NIRS signal due to subject movement is becoming an *** artifacts generally produce signal fiuctuations that are larger than physio-logical NIRS signals,thus it is cruciai to corect for them before obtaining an cstimate ofstimulusevoked hemodynamic responses.,There are various methods for correction such as principlecomponent analy sis(P cA),wavelet-based filt ering and spline int ***,we introduce anew approach to motion artifact correction,targeted principle component analysis(PcA),which incorporates a PcA filter only on the segments of data identified as motion *** expected that this will overcome the issues of filtering desired signals that plagues standardPcA fitering of entire data *** compared the new approach with the most efiective motionartifact correction algorithms on a set of data acquired simultaneously with a collodion-fixedprobe(low motion artifact content)and a standard Velcro probe(high motion artifact content).Our results show that tPcA gives statistically better results in recovering hemodynamic responsefunction(HRF)as compared to wavelet-based fltering and spline interpolation for the *** resulis in a significant reduction in mean-squauared'error(MSE)and significant en-hancement in Pearson's correlation coeficient to the true HRF,The collodion-fixed fiber probewith no motion correction performed better than the Velcro probe corrected for motion artifactsin terms of MSE and Pearson's correlation ***,if the experimental study permits,the use of a collodion-fixed fiber probe may be desirable.I the use of a collodion-fixed probe is notfeasible,then we suggest the use of tP cA in the processing of motion artifact contaminated data.

Background：Previous research indicates that bahiagrass may be successfully conserved as baleage,but nutritive value is typically low for lactating dairy *** purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding modest amounts of alfalfa forage（22%）,achieved by inter-seeding alfalfa into an existing bahiagrass pasture,on baleage nutritive value and lactation performance of Holstein *** treatments employed were monoculture bahiagrass baleage（MBB;negative control）,bahiagrass-alfalfa mixture baleage（BAB） and conventional corn silage（ccS;positive control）.Thirty six mid lactation Holstein cows[34.8 ±5.8 kg 3.5%fat-corrected milk and 112 ± 19 d in milk（DIM）]were stratified according to milk yield and DIM and assigned randomly to 1 of 3 forage *** were trained to calan feeding gates and were offered a common ccS-based TMR in a 10-d covariance period followed by a 42-d treatment feeding ***：The BAB contained more protein and less NDF than MBB（12.6 vs 10.3%cP and 71.8 vs 76.6%NDF）.Diet DMI was similar for MBB and BAB（19.5 vs 21.6 kg/hd/d）,but cows consumed more of the ccS diet（25.5 kg/hd/d）than either baleage-based *** offered BAB tended to produce more milk than cows offered MBB based TMR（28.4 vs 26.1 kg/hd/d）,but both baleage diets generated less milk than ccS-based diets（33.1 kg/hd/d）.Milk cumpusition was similar across diets except for milk protein concentrations which were higher tor ccS than either MBB or BAB diets;however,milk urea nitrogen（MUN） was lowest for cows fed ccS *** BW gain was higher for BAB than MBB implying that a portion of the higher energy contributed by the alfalfa was being used to replenish weight on these mid lactation ***：Data from this study indicate that alfalfa inter-seeded in bahiagrass sod that produces BAB with as little as 22%alfalfa may improve nutritive value compared to monoculture bahiagrass baleage and marginally improve lactation performance of Holstein ***,t

The hypoxia inducible factors （Hifs） are evolutionarily conserved transcriptional factors that control homeostatic responses to low oxygen. In developing bone, Hif-1 generated signals induce angiogenesis necessary for osteoblast specification, but in mature bone, loss of Hif-1 in osteoblasts resulted in a more rapid accumulation of bone. These findings suggested that Hif-1 exerts distinct developmental functions and acts as a negative regulator of bone formation. To investigate the function of Hif-1a in osteoanabolic signaling, we assessed the effect of Hif-1a loss-of-function on bone formation in response to intermittent parathyroid hormone （PTH）. Mice lacking Hif-1a in osteoblasts and osteocytes form more bone in response to PTH, likely through a larger increase in osteoblast activity and increased sensitivity to the hormone. consistent with this effect, exposure of primary mouse osteoblasts to PTH resulted in the rapid induction of Hif-1a protein levels via a post-transcriptional mechanism. The enhanced anabolic response appears to result from the removal of Hif-1a-mediated suppression of β-catenin transcriptional activity. Together, these data indicate that Hif-1a functions in the mature skeleton to restrict osteoanabolic signaling. The availability of pharmacological agents that reduce Hif-1a function suggests the value in further exploration of this pathway to optimize the therapeutic benefits of PTH.

Predictive factors associated with carcinoid syndrome in patients with gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors

AIM To discover unknown factors associated with carcinoid syndrome(cS) with the goal of earlier diagnosis of *** In this retrospective case-control study using United States administrative claims, patients(≥ 18 years) newly-diagnosed with gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors(GI NETs) without cS(controls) were exactly matched to patients with cS(cases) based on NET diagnosis date at a 3-to-1 ratio. Study index date was first cS diagnosis(controls: same distance from NET diagnosis as cases). The most observed conditions, excluding cS-associated symptoms/diagnoses, during the year before index date were assessed. Forwardstepwise logistic regression models were used to derive predictors, and were validation within another claims database. RESULTS In the development database, 1004 patients with GI NETs were identified; 251(25%) had cS and 753(75%) were controls. In the validation database, 724 patients with GI NETs were identified; 181(25%) had cS and 543(75%) were controls. A total of 33 common diagnoses(excluding conditions already known to be associated with cS) in the development database were entered in forward step-wise logistic regression models. In the final, validated logistic regression model, three factors prior to cS diagnosis were found consistently associated with higher risks for cS, including liver disorder [odds ratio(95%cI): 3.38(2.07-5.51)], enlargement of lymph nodes [2.13(1.10-4.11)], and abdominal mass [3.79(1.87-7.69)].cONcLUSION GI NET patients with cS were 2-4 times as likely to have preexisting diagnoses(i.e., liver disorder, enlarged lymph nodes, abdominal mass) than non-cS patients.

AIM: To test the hypotheses that diffusion weighed (DW)and transcatheter intraarterial perfusion (TRIP)magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can each be used to assess regional differences in tumor function in an animal pancreatic cancer ***: VX2 tumors were implanted in pancreata of 6 rabbits. MRI and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) were performed 3 wk following implantation. With a 2-French catheter secured in the rabbit's gastroduodenal artery, each rabbit was transferred to an adjacent 1.5T MRI scanner. DWand TRIP-MRI were performed to determine if necrotic tumor core could be differentiated from viable tumor periphery. For each, we compared mean differences between tumor core/ periphery using a 2-tailed paired t-test (α = 0.05). Imaging was correlated with histopathology. RESULTS: Tumors were successfully grown in all rabbits, confirmed by necropsy. On DW-MRI, mean apparent diffusion coeffi cient (ADc) value was higher in necrotic tumor core (2.1 ± 0.3 mm2/s) than in viable tumor periphery (1.4 ± 0.5 mm2/s) (P core (66 ± 31 relative units) (P cONcLUSION: Functional MRI can be used to differentiate necrotic from viable tumor cells in an animal pancreatic cancer model using ADc (DW-MRI) and perfusion (TRIP-MRI) values.
