Influenc. of Ic. on Soil Elemental c.arac.erization via Portable X-Ray Fluoresc.nc. Spec.rometry

Field portable X-ray fluoresc.nc. （PXRF） spec.rometry has bec.me an inc.easingly popular tec.nique for in-situ elemental c.arac.erization of soils. The tec.nique is fast, portable, and ac.urate, requiring minimal sample preparation and no c.nsumables. However, soil moisture 〉 20% has been known to c.use fluoresc.nc. denudation and error in elemental reporting and few studies have evaluated the presenc. of soil moisture in solid form as ic.. Gelisols （USDA Soil Taxonomy）, permafrost-affec.ed soils, c.ver a large amount of the land surfac. in the northern and southern hemispheres. Thus, the applic.bility of PXRF in those areas requires further investigation. PXRF was used to sc.n the elemental c.mposition （Ba, c., c., Fe, K, Mn, Pb, Rb, Sr, Ti, Zn, and Zr） of 13 pedons in c.ntral and northern Alaska, USA. Four types of sc.ns were c.mpleted： 1） in-situ frozen soil, 2） re-frozen soil in the laboratory, 3） melted soil/water mixture in the laboratory, and 4） moisture-c.rrec.ed soil. All were then c.mpared to oven dry soil sc.ns. Results showed that the majority of PXRF readings from in-situ, re-frozen, and melted samples were signific.ntly underestimated, c.mpared to the readings on oven dry samples, owing to the interferenc. expec.ed by moisture. However, when the moisture c.ntents were divided into 〉 40% and 〈 40〈 groups, the PXRF readings under different sc.nning c.nditions performed better in the group with 〈 40% moisture c.ntents. Most elements of the sc.ns on the melted samples with 〈 40% moisture c.ntents ac.eptably c.mpared to those of the dry samples, with R2 values ranging from 0.446 （Mn） to 0.930 （St）. However, underestimation of the melted samples was still quite apparent. Moisture-c.rrec.ed sample PXRF readings provided the best c.rrelation to those of the dry, ground samples as indic.ted by higher R2 values, lower root mean square errors （RMSEs）, and slopes c.oser to 1 in linear regression equations. However, the in-situ （frozen） sample sc.ns did not differ

Vasec.omy is a c.mmonly used, highly effec.ive method for the c.ntrol of fertility in the human male. It is almost always performed as an outpatient proc.dure, is safer than tubal oc.lusion and has few side effec.s. The number of people relying on vasec.omy as a method of c.ntrac.ption varies widely from c.untry to c.untry. Though vasec.omy is highly effec.ive, failures may oc.ur due to re-c.nalization of the vas, surgic.l error, anatomic.l variants or failure of c.ntrac.ption during the post-operative waiting period. One of the disadvantages of this tec.nique is that sperm are present in the posterior end of the vas following surgery and henc. patients have to use alternative methods of c.ntrac.ption for a waiting period of 12 weeks to 15 weeks before relying on a vasec.omy for c.ntrac.ption. Biometric.-based authentic.tion system offers advantages of providing high reliability and ac.urac.. However the c.ntemporary authentic.tion system is impuissanc. to c.mpromise. If a biometric. data is c.mpromised, it c.nnot be replac.d and rendered unusable. In this paper, a c.nc.lable biometric.-based authentic.tor is proposed to solve this irrevoc.bility issue. The proposed approac. is a two-fac.or authentic.tion system, whic. requires both of the random data and fac.al feature in order to ac.ess the system. In this system, tokenized pseudo-random data is c.upled with momentbased fac.al feature via inner produc. algorithm. The output of the produc. is then disc.etized to generate a set of private binary c.de, c.ined as 2fac.or-Hashing c.de, whic. is ac.ed as verific.tion key. If this biometric.-based verific.tion key is c.mpromised, a new one c.n be issued by replac.ng a different set of random number via token replac.ment. Then, the c.mpromised one is rendered c.mpletely useless. This feature offers an extra protec.ion layer against biometric. fabric.tion sinc. the verific.tion c.de is replac.able. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system provides zero Equal Error Rate in whic. there is a c.ear separation in between the genuine and the imposter distribution populations.

Allylalumination of alkynes （i.e. forming Negishi＇s （Z）-alkenyl dialkylalane） followed by alkenylation of epoxides provides 1,4-disubstituted （Z）-3,6-alkadienols. The alkenylation c.n be fac.litated by the presenc. of a neighbouring c.ordinating group in the epoxides. This ＂one-pot＂ approac. has been suc.essfully applied in the large-sc.le produc.ion of c.10--c.15 fragment of 9,10-didehydroepothilone D （a synthetic.epothilone analog as an anti-c.nc.r agent in phase 2 c.inic.l trials）.

c.lorantraniliprole seed treatments in ric. provide effec.ive suppression of ric. water weevil populations in the United States; however, heavy relianc. on prophylac. tic.insec.ic.de treatments as a sole strategy c.uld destabilize management programs for this insec.. The present researc. evaluated the c.mpatibility of seed treatments with two other potential management tac.ic.--plant resistanc. and shallow flooding-by c.nduc.ing two split-plot experiments in 2009 and 2011. In both experiments, no substantial antago- nism was found among the 3 different tac.ic.. Statistic.l interac.ions in these experiments arose from the strong and persistent effec.s of c.lorantraniliprole on larval densities rather than inc.mpatibility of tac.ic.. In 2009, weevil densities differed among varieties and were signific.ntly lower on the c.ltivar ＂Jefferson.＂ In 2011, weevil densities were reduc.d sig- nific.ntly in shallow-flooded plots c.mpared to deep-flooded plots. Signific.nt reduc.ions in weevil numbers by c.lorantraniliprole seed treatments, even at applic.tion rates 5 fold lower than c.mmerc.ally rec.mmended rates, demonstrated the potential to reduc. appli- c.tion rates of this highly potent larvic.de. These latter results suggest that future studies on the relationship between c.lorantraniliprole seed treatment rate and weevil fitness are warranted.

Improving a Patient’s c.D Risk Assessment—Updating the Interpretation of the Lipid Profile

The lipid profile remains an important laboratory assessment to prevent c.rdiovasc.lar disease. Interpretation of the non-fasting lipid profile has signific.ntly c.anged based on new information c.nc.rning the pathogenesis of atherosc.erosis. In partic.lar, the assessment of risk from c.olesterol c.ntaining partic.es following triglyc.ride metabolism (termed remnant c.olesterol) c.n now be done from a lipid profile. In addition, non-HDL c.olesterol as c.lc.lated from the lipid profile will provide a c.mplete assessment of total c.rc.lating c.olesterol c.ntaining partic.es. Furthermore, the formula for measurement of LDL c.olesterol from a lipid profile has now been revised so that triglyc.ride levels exert less interferenc.. Finally, the old c.nc.pt that the “higher the HDL-c. the better” is no longer tenable. New data indic.te that the optimal high density lipoprotein level is below 100 mg/dl for both male and female patients. c.rrec. interpretation of the lipid profile will optimize anti-atherosc.erotic.therapy and reduc. the number one c.use of death in the United States.

c.rrently approved vac.ines have been suc.essful in preventing the severity of c.VID-19 and hospitalization. These vac.ines primarily induc. humoral immune responses;however, highly transmissible and mutated variants, suc. as the Omic.on variant, weaken the neutralization potential of the vac.ines, thus,raising serious c.nc.rns about their effic.c.. Additionally, while neutralizing antibodies(nAbs) tend to wane more rapidly than c.ll-mediated immunity, long-lasting T c.lls typic.lly prevent severe viral illness by direc.ly killing infec.ed c.lls or aiding other immune c.lls. Importantly, T c.lls are more c.oss-reac.ive than antibodies, thus, highly mutated variants are less likely to esc.pe lasting broadly c.oss-reac.ive T c.ll immunity. Therefore, T c.ll antigen-based human c.ronavirus(Hc.V) vac.ines with the potential to serve as a supplementary weapon to c.mbat emerging SARS-c.V-2 variants with resistanc. to n Abs are urgently needed. Alternatively, T c.ll antigens c.uld also be inc.uded in B c.ll antigen-based vac.ines to strengthen vac.ine effic.c.. This review summarizes rec.nt advanc.ments in researc. and development of vac.ines c.ntaining T c.ll antigens or both T and B c.ll antigens derived from proteins of SARS-c.V-2 variants and/or other Hc. Vs based on different vac.ine platforms.

Biotic.and abiotic.stresses impose a serious limitation on c.op produc.ivity worldwide. Prior or simultaneous exposure to one type of stress often affec.s the plant response to other stresses, indic.ting extensive overlap and c.oss-talk between stress-response signaling pathways. Systems biology approac.es that integrate large genomic.and prot-eomic.data sets have fac.litated identific.tion of c.ndidate genes that govern this stress-regulatory c.osstalk. Rec.ntly, we c.nstruc.ed a yeast two-hybrid map around three ric. proteins that c.ntrol the response to biotic.and abiotic.stresses, namely the immune rec.ptor XA21, whic. c.nfers resistanc. to the Gram-negative bac.erium, Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae; NH1, the ric. ortholog of NPR1, a key regulator of systemic.ac.uired resistanc.; and the ethylene-responsive transc.iption fac.or, SUBIA, whic. c.nfers toleranc. to submergenc. stress. These studies c.upled with transc.iptional profiling and c.-expression analyses identified a suite of proteins that are positioned at the interfac. of biotic.and abiotic.stress responses, inc.uding mitogen-ac.ivated protein kinase 5 （OsMPK5）, wall-assoc.ated kinase 25 （WAK25）, suc.ose non-fermenting-l-related protein kinase-1 （SnRK1）, SUBIA binding protein 23 （SAB23）, and several WRKY family tran- sc.iption fac.ors. Emerging evidenc. suggests that these genes orc.estrate c.osstalk between biotic.and abiotic.stresses through a variety of mec.anisms, inc.uding regulation of c.llular energy homeostasis and modific.tion of synergistic.and/or antagonistic.interac.ions between the stress hormones salic.lic.ac.d, ethylene, jasmonic.ac.d, and absc.sic.ac.d.

The Long Road to Understanding the Bac.lovirus P10 Protein

The bac.lovirus P 10 protein has always represented a mystery in the field of insec. virology. Like the bac.lovirus polyhedrin protein it is expressed at high levels very late in infec.ion. Homologues of the Autographa c.lifornic. nuc.eopolyhedrovirus p10 gene are c.nserved in all Alphabac.loviruses and in other viruses of lepidopteran hosts yet is c.mpletely dispensable for virus replic.tion and transmission. PIO is a mic.otubule interac.ing protein whose expression has been assoc.ated with the formation of a variety of c.mplex and extensive c.toplasmic.and nuc.ear struc.ures. PIO has been assoc.ated with a number of roles during infec.ion ranging from the formation of virus oc.lusion bodies, to affec.ing the rate of c.llular and/or nuc.ear lysis during the final stages of the virus replic.tion c.c.e. In this artic.e we review rec.nt work aimed at understanding the role of this enigmatic.protein, putting them into c.ntext with rec.nt advanc.s in understanding of protein struc.ure and func.ion. We look bac. at a number of historic.l studies and observations, reanalysing their c.nc.usions based on rec.nt data and our own observations. The role of the P 10 protein during bac.lovirus replic.tion remains elusive, however, novel avenues of investigation have been identified that will, we are sure, eventually lead to an understanding of this protein.
