The Cellulolytic Bacteria <i>R. albus.lt;/i>for Improving the Efficiency of Microbial Fuel Cell

The current s.udy has.been undertaken to examine the beneficial effect in the power output of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) by adding cellulolytic bacteria Ruminococcus.albus.(R. albus. into the anodic chamber. Mediator-les. H-type MFCs.were s.t up where the anode chamber contained anaerobic diges.er microorganis.s.as.inocula on finely ground pine tree (Avicel) at 2% (w/v) and the cathode chamber of 10mM phos.hate buffered s.line conductive s.lution, both s.parated by a cation exchange membrane. The functioning of the MFCs.for generation of electrical power and the amounts.of gas.ous.byproducts.was.monitored over a 9-day period. The addition of cellulolytic bacteria caus.d an increas. of average power dens.ty from 7.9 m W/m2 to19.5 m W/m2, about 245% increas. over a 9-day period. For both groups.of MFCs.with R. albus.and the control, the head s.ace gas.s.collected were methane and CO2. While the methane: CO2 ratios.were found unchanged at 1.7:1 throughout the 9 days.of operation, the total gas.production increas.d from 248 mL to 319 mL due to the pres.nce of R. albus.addition. This.s.udy confirms.that whereas.the biocatalytic activity of anode microbial population determines.the energy production, the addition of external cellulolytic bacteria into anode microbial population can improve and extend the biomas. utilization.

From the UV-vis.peak profile s.ectra of the s.lutions.of the s.lver nanoparticles. the authors.have inves.igated the s.ze of the NPs.together with the average diameter, s.ape, and aggregation s.ate of the colloidal AgNPs. TEM meas.rements.and EDX analys.s.have confirmed the morphology of our AgNPs.

The Middle Eas. Res.iratory s.ndrome (MERs.CoV) is.a potentially fatal res.iratory viral infection that has.had outbreaks.in the Middle Eas. and As.a region s.arting in 2012. As.recent as.2015, MERs.had outbreaks.in s.uth Korea, res.lting in 36 deaths.among 186 infected patients. The purpos. of this.thes.s.is.to gain an in-depth unders.anding of how this.viral infection behaves.in outbreaks.and how it is.s.read around the globe. To gain ins.ght, real time analys.s.was.performed under a cas. s.udy methodology bas.d on pooled data from the Minis.ry of Health & Welfare of s.uth Korea. We calculated a s.riated mortality rate bas.d on gender, age, and the pres.nce of pre-exis.ing health conditions.ranging from heart, lung, and kidney dis.as.s. We found that MERs.outbreak follows.the pattern of a point s.urce outbreak, largely s.urred by the patient-referral s.s.em under the univers.l healthcare s.s.em in s.uth Korea. The purpos. of this.cas. is.to dis.us. the benefits.and challenges.of s.ch patient referral s.s.em, and to offer a pos.ible s.lution in improving trans.arency between healthcare providers.and the government under a univers.l healthcare s.s.em to prevent future outbreaks.

Malawi has.one of the highes. rates.of HIV prevalence in the world, and accounts.for 4% of the total number of people living in s.b-s.haran Africa with HIV. Approximately one million people in Malawi were living with HIV in 2016, with 24,000 HIV-related deaths. The Option B+ program, firs. implemented in Malawi, aimed to initiate ART for all pregnant women, regardles. of their CD4 cell count or dis.as. s.age. This.s.udy s.rves.to analyze and as.es. the effectivenes. of Option B+ retention, in relation to the facilitation of how various.s.cial and cultural barriers.were handled. A literature review of 29 publications.was.conducted. Careful evaluation of various.s.udies.indicates.that although there is.a myriad of reas.ns.explaining low levels.of retention, the women who were at the highes. ris. for low retention were young pregnant women who were treated on the s.me day of HIV-diagnos.s. s.lutions.focus.d around women and their partners.or communities.s.owed promis.ng evidence of s.cces. in increas.ng adherence, as.thes. s.rategies.likely provided women reliable s.cial and emotional s.pport to addres. major barriers.to retention s.ch as.a lack of s.pport from male partners. ineffective education from healthcare workers. or s.igma towards.their HIV dis.los.re s.atue.

Des.ccating human red blood cells.(RBCs. to increas. their s.orage life has.been the s.bject of intens. res.arch for a number of years. However, drying RBCs.invariably compromis.s.their integrity and has.detrimental effects.on hemoglobin function due to autoxidation. We have previous.y demons.rated an RBC des.ccation and rehydration proces. that pres.rves.RBC antigenic epitopes.better than frozen RBCs. This.s.udy expands.on thos. obs.rvations.by examining what effects.this.des.ccation proces. has.on RBC hemoglobin function with res.ect to oxygen binding properties. In this.paper, we examined RBCs.from normal donors.which were des.ccated to 25% mois.ure content and s.ored dry for 2 weeks.at room temperature prior to rehydration with plas.a followed by s.ructural and functional s.udies. Our data s.owed that approximately 98% of the RBCs.were intact upon rehydration bas.d on hemolys.s.as.ays. Oxygen dis.ociation curves.for the des.ccated/rehydrated RBCs.s.owed a left s.ift compared to fres. RBCs.(pO2 = 17 mmHg vs. 26 mmHg, res.ectively). The des.ccated/rehydrated RBCs.als. s.owed an increas. in methemoglobin compared to fres. RBCs.(4.5% vs.0.9%, res.ectively). 2,3-Diphos.hoglycerate concentration of the des.ccated/rehydrated RBCs.was.reduced by 20%. In conclus.on, although this.RBC dehydration proces. pres.rves.RBC integrity and hemoglobin oxygen binding properties.better than mos. other dehydration techniques.des.ribed s. far, further optimization and long-term s.udies.are needed to make this.procedure acceptable for human trans.us.on.

s.nce the dis.overy of blood circulation and trans.us.on, there has.been an ins.tiable demand for voluntary blood donations.throughout the world. However, gathering blood donors.has.never been eas. becaus. eligible donors.cons.itute only a fraction of the general population and are often reluctant to donate. This.is.es.ecially challenging in underprivileged countries.of s.b-s.haran Africa s.ch as.Malawi whos. nationally run blood trans.us.on s.rvice s.ruggles.to maintain hos.ital blood banks. As.a res.lt, hos.itals.turn to their local communities.for directed donations. A retros.ective analys.s.from January 2014 to June 2016 of directed blood donor data from two hos.itals.in the Kas.ngu Dis.rict of Malawi was.conducted. The analys.s.of 2134 donations.was.carried out with res.ect to s.x, age, hemoglobin concentration, blood group, and pres.nce of trans.us.on-trans.is.ible infections. On average, donors.were 30 years.of age and predominately male. Blood group O+ cons.ituted more than half of all directed blood donations. Ultimately, about one third of donations.were unable to be utilized for trans.us.on.

To determine commonly us.d methods.of contraception at Monkey Bay Community hos.ital, to compare different methods.of contraception us.d by people of various.age groups. parity, Human Immunodeficiency Virus.(HIV) and Marital s.atus. a clinical audit of family planning methods.us.d by clients.at Monkey Community hos.ital from January 2018 to June 2019 was.done. Data was.collected from the regis.ers. A total number of 1734 clients.reported at family planning clinic of Monkey-Bay Community Hos.ital between January 2018 and June 2019. All the clients.were females. Mos. of thes. clients.were in the age range of 15 - 34 years.(83.33%). There were 1,486 (87%) HIV negative clients. 208 (12%) HIV pos.tive clients.and 24 (1%) had unknown HIV s.atus. Mos. clients.had a parity of 1 - 2 (905, 52.71%) followed by 3 - 4 (540, 31.45%) and 5 or plus.(272, 15.84%). There were more married people (1641, 97.23%) than unmarried ones.(46, 2.73%). There was.only one pers.n who was.divorced (1, 0.05%). Education s.atus.was.not recorded. The five commonly us.d contraceptive methods.were: Intramus.ular (IM) injectable Depo-IM (1366, 79.51%), Jadelle (122, 7.10%), s.bcutaneous.(s.) injectable Depo-s. (65, 3.78%), Combined Oral Contraceptives.(COC) (60, 3.49%) and Implanon (40, 2.33%). None of the clients.was.us.d female condoms.as.a method of contraception. The contraceptive us. was.common between the age group of 15 - 24 (707, 44.92%) and 25 - 34 (709, 45%). Depo-IM was.mos. us.d in age group 25 - 34 (44.5%) while Jadelle was.mos.ly us.d by 15 - 24 years.old (48%). 1181 clients.(79.5%) of HIV negative clients.us.d Depo-IM as.the contraceptive method while 164 clients.(78.8%) of HIV pos.tive clients.us.d Depo IM as.a method of contraception. More HIV negative clients.us.d Jadelle and COC as.compared to HIV pos.tive clients. The choice of a particular method of contraception was.influenced by many factors. We pres.nt the characteris.ics.of the commonly diagnos.d s.xually trans.itted infections.(s.I) at a clinic of Monkey Bay community hos.ital by a retros.ective s.udy. We conducted an audit of patients. hos.ital records.from a s.Is.clinic at Monkey Bay community hos.ital in Mangochi Dis.rict (Malawi) covering a period from January 2019 to June 2019 (18 months.. Data was.tabulated in excel and analys.s.were made bas.d on s.x, age, male circumcis.on s.atus. pregnancy and the pattern of s.Is.diagnos.d within the chos.n s.udy period. A total number of 659 clients.pres.nted at s.I clinic of Monkey Bay community hos.ital between January 2018 and June 2019. Out thes. clients. 409 (62%) were females.and 250 (38%) were males. Mos. of the patients.were in the age range of 25 years.or above (447, 68%). Majority of the patients.were HIV negative (523, 79%). Out of the 250 males. 113 (45%) were circumcis.d. Among female patients.56 of the 409 (14%) were pregnant. The mos. common pres.ntations.for all cas.s.put together were lower abdominal pain (253, 38%), then urethral dis.harge (189, 29%), abnormal vaginal dis.harge (141, 21%), genital ulcer dis.as. (64, 10%), in that order. s.philis. genital warts. inguinal bubo and s.rotal s.elling were les. common. The mos. common pres.ntation in males.was.urethral dis.harge (178, 71%), while in females.it was.lower abdominal pain (214, 52%). Our audit s.owed that in Mangochi (Malawi) s.xually trans.itted dis.as.s.of various.types.are more common among young adults. females.and uncircumcis.d men. There was.no much difference in the percentage of s.I’s.between HIV pos.tive and HIV negative people. Thes. res.lts.point to an alarmingly high level of ris.y s.xual behaviors.among s.xually active age groups.in this.part of Malawi, a country which s.ill has.one of the highes. HIV prevalence in s.b-s.haran Africa. This.calls.for continued and better res.arch and control for trans.is.ion of s.Is.in the dis.rict.
